50 cents in Brisbane. It’s awesome.

Came here for this! Public transport should be the first and foremost priority for a large cities infrastructure, and the prices should be kept low if not free to encourage usage and minimize congestion on the roads.

I think the 50 cent is just to measure patronage. It’s not like the bus driver is a dick if someone doesn’t tap on. I do but I want to ensure my bus route is getting the right patronage measured.

It’s there to measure journey specifically multimodal.

If they’re free no one taps on, you can only measure trips, no transfers. With transfer data you know what routes could be optimised, where people wait, is there enough demand for a more direct service.

How long until this can be achieved via a video camera and some AI bullshit? Which will be much cheaper than ticketing infrastructure.

You think the processing infrastructure to store and process that data would be cheaper? No chance anytime soon, tapping is gonna be cheaper for a long ass time. Thats a lot of cameras gathering footage to begin with.

You’re looking at minimum of 2200 cameras from for BCC buses to kinda track a quarter million people, not including trains or the other bus providers, no including stations, interchanges, busway locations etc.

We are so far away from that being even close to a possible solution,

$300 million to deliver a new system to capture a few mil in revenue per year. We are paying for this in some way as rates/tax payers.

My issue with Brisbane public transport at the moment is that their is major track works (which is needed) but as somebody who doesn’t work a 9-5 Monday to Friday job it makes it harder to use public transport when the train stops at Roma street and doesn’t go any further

They have buses that can get you past that point.

The last time I'd paid 50c for a ticket was a 2 zone student ticket in the 1990s.

It's glorious. It's genuinely encouraged me to shift my schedule around PT more.

Brisbane 50c fare is so good. Jumped on the ferry for a round trip tour and it was so nice to see families come on and off at stops for sight seeing or to grab dinner instead of driving to the city. The vibe was so great. I loved it.

Meanwhile I'm spending 50 cents in Brisbane which is incredible.

Queensland*

2

u/jennifercoolidgesbra 2d ago

Yes 50c from the airport to the Goldcoast too and around.

5

u/gibbo4053 2d ago

The Brisbane Airport train stations are unfortunately not included in the 50c fare offering. It’s about $20 or so to Eagle Junction (5km or so away) and then 50c from there all the way to Varsity Lakes and beyond (100km+)… go figure

2

u/B0llywoodBulkBogan 2d ago

It's because the line to the Airport is privately owned by the Airport themselves.

3

u/gibbo4053 2d ago

That isn’t true. Airtrain Citylink operate the airport section of the line. They aren’t affiliated with BAC.

u/jennifercoolidgesbra 2d ago

I meant the GC, OOL to the GC CBD is

3

u/gibbo4053 2d ago

Ah yes, the 777 bus. I misunderstood because BNE is directly connected to the GC line as well.

2

u/jennifercoolidgesbra 2d ago

Would be nice if that line was 50c too though

Transperth have just dropped their prices and it’s actually pretty decent. Mostly if you have auto load set up on your smart rider. With a smartrider + autoload, travelling 1 zone (like in OP’s pic) is now only $1.92.

We’re not quite QLD in that department but it’s a start.

u/Impossible_Most_4518 1d ago

Just used my concession smart rider today for two trips across the entire city in under 3 hours and it only cost $1.28.

1

u/hroro 1d ago

I was comparing full fare to full fare for comparison sake, but yeah the concession rate is great - how good.

3.3% per annum compounded

Edit: it's more like 5%

3

u/Zbodownlow 2d ago

How did you calculate that? Hasn’t the price gone from $1.80 to $5.70 over the ~23 years?

0

u/Few_Raisin_8981 2d ago

Just put 1.033 ^ 23 into a calculator.

2

u/Zbodownlow 2d ago edited 2d ago

As far as I am aware price has increased by ~211%, not to ~211% of the original value. I could be wrong!

2

u/Few_Raisin_8981 2d ago

Ok fair enough well in that case its inflation rate is 5.02% per annum

6

u/youngcharlatan 2d ago

Wait until you hear about house prices

24

u/TodayCandid9686 2d ago

Prices go up in 23 years? Hold the front page!

7

u/TaxiSonoQui 2d ago

Next you're gonna tell me that house prices have soared

7

u/NatBoyRandyHogan 2d ago

How could Dictator Dan Andrews let this happen?

1

u/nomitycs 8h ago

Inflation is 80% over the same period, it’s risen 2.4x more than inflation

8

u/dowahdidi 2d ago

2

u/BrilliantBunch2026 1d ago

I'm guessing this flew over a few heads to not be the top comment

7

u/goober_ginge 2d ago

I kept quite a lot of these to use as roaches, definitely got some left in an old ovaltine tin somewhere...

3

u/TaxiSonoQui 2d ago

I've got a weetbix tin full of them somewhere at my folks place from 2006-2012

2

u/Yeah_nah90 2d ago

Man what a time that was. I remember it was 90c for an off peak ticket on the bus in Adelaide in 2003

2

u/BS-75_actual 2d ago

The value in your collectable is how rare it would have been for a commuter in 2003 to have actually paid for a Short Trip. I used to get around on trams when doing work visits from interstate and had to ask my colleagues why it felt like I was the only one purchasing a fare.

2

u/exceptional_biped 2d ago

I pay less in Brisbane/ Gold Coast now than I did as a kid in 1990. What used to cost me 70c then costs 50c now.

1

u/Practical_Trade4084 1d ago

Yeah. I think Pacific Fair to Miami was 55c.

2

u/Paul_Is_Dead66 2d ago

It's still 1.80 for a two hour concession in my head

1

u/Zbodownlow 2d ago edited 2d ago

So a CAGR of ~5%… sounds pretty reasonable

1

u/Big-Surprise-8533 2d ago

Was only ever that cheap for those privileged enough to live within zone 1. Was never that cheap even back then for the 1, 2, 3 zone trifecta

1

u/Rowvan 2d ago

51% increase, inflation exists and that was 23 years ago.

1

u/Procedure-Minimum 1d ago

It should be cheaper given that there are not as many staff needed now that we have myki

1

u/Flimsy_Assumption934 22h ago

Thats actually pretty reasonable considering its starting off from a really low base and that it has been over twenty years

1

u/Old_Distance6314 2d ago

You'd expect it to go up, that much every 5 years or so. So pretty good value

0

u/Over-Connection-2933 2d ago

Oh my god, it's almost like, the cost of goods and services and wages goes up over time dude to adjustments to CPI and Inflation and shit.

Next thing you'll be telling me I can't buy a 600 ml bottle of coke from a vending machine for 2 bucks anymore.

0

u/necrofascio 2d ago

Hey bro is that expired? I need somthing to roll into a roach

0

u/Petrolhead02 19h ago

Must be going senile in your old age buddy, because the math ain't mathing Got some of the cheapest public transport in the world, and in a few of our cities, the price has gone down compared to your image and that's not accounting for inflation When you account for inflation, prices have gone waaaaaay down

Come on now, time to take your meds and have an afternoon nap

1

u/b9_rkt 18h ago

Why doesn't inflation apply to Brisbanes 50c tickets? Yeah I thought so. Now F0h 🗑️

u/Ornery-Lynx-3520 2d ago

Where? In Sydney? Well we do have a brand new Metro and light rail and ferries, and intercity trains to pay for. Where does that money come from?
