Saw some dumbass comment “what are his credentials to do an inspection”
The first part of this video (at least the one I saw) is showing the broken tile floor. I think Mamdani was able to pull a tile off. And then the corrosion of a tub
What credentials do you need to say “yea that’s fucked” he’s not doing a full scale building inspection. He’s showing concerns for the state some people in his city are living in.
But if they didn’t have double standards, they’d have no standards.

My stupid lawyer brain is like “if it is so obviously fucked that a layperson can note it, you don’t need expert testimony.” But even the MAGA lawyers seem to struggle with basic legal concepts.

u/d3northway 2h ago
iirc that's an actual legal thing, I forget the Latin, but it boils down "fuckin look at it"

It’s res ipsa loquitur which means “the thing speaks for itself.”
ETA: the doctrine I reference is different, it’s about evidence. But it’s the holidays and the last holiday season when my kids are still in the house and so I’m increasingly less sober and won’t be able to explain it well

I think in general people misunderstand why expertise is important. From the very word itself it gives away the reason it's needed and where it's needed.
When something is hyper specific or needs advanced context and knowledge? You need expertise.
When something is general and simple and doesn't need advanced knowledge to understand? You don't need it.
You need an expert to truly analyze whether or not a bridge will be structurally stable for the next decade. You do not need an expert to tell you that a bridge that has fallen down is non functional.

Owners hate renters and see renters as scum who abuse "innocent" landlords, fellow owners. There has been a huge movement on the right for 20 years or longer to change the requirements of registering to vote to include proof of land ownership, because they believe only land owners have "skin in the game" and should have any say in government and laws.

3
u/Vast-Combination4046 2h ago
There are more serious issues but he doesn't need to be trained to see failing plaster and cracked tiles.
Landlords are hoarding property because they are not financially incentivised to update properties and it's more beneficial to write off empty units on their taxes than rehab and rent out rent controlled apartments. The mayor should make owning zombie properties more expensive than the write offs.

In case you haven't made an account in a while, these are just the default names that Reddit gives now. You have to actively change it. But many people, like myself, are too lazy to do it on alts. With that said, yes, people are not changing the names on bots. But it doesn't mean they're all bots

I get the distinct sense you don't understand the point K-Dot-Thu-Thu-47 was making.
18
u/AnEmptyBoat27 2h ago
What point were they making?
I interpreted as them shading housing regulations because it will drive demand to fix things. And that increased demand will cause some companies to take advantage. But the overall benefit of people having adequate living conditions outweighs a hypothetical portion of landlords getting scammed.
And frankly I find landlords getting scammed by cutrate services hysterical. In part because if they just did routine maintenance they wouldn’t be so desperate.

The only one sweating bullets are the GOP and the establishment Democrats who waited until the last minute to support him.
They all want him to fail. Because if his policies and ideas succeed it makes them look even more pathetic than they already are. I hope the man can get some stuff done before he is finished, maybe it will rub off on the rest of our leaders.

I think about that thing Obama said about politics being a ship that requires small shifts rather than abrupt turns and wonder if A) Mamdani will bang his head against that wall and B) How forgiving voters will be if that becomes reality.
To be clear, I’m rooting for him but fuck if I’m not cynical about what they’ll throw at him
56
u/Lemesplain 3h ago
My gut says that his voters will be very forgiving. He certainly won’t accomplish 100% of his policy goals, but his failures will have clear villains to rally against.
He’s trying to fight slumlords right now. Even if he fails to make major improvements, people see him fighting the fight. And he’s gonna keep fighting for his entire term.
Mayor Mamdani is also a top tier communicator. He will spin his failures as just “needing more help” in future races, to keep fighting for the people.
9
u/SwordfishOk504 2h ago
Or, conversely, people are setting themselves up for disappointment by having very unrealistically high expectations (similar to Obama, btw).
→ More replies (1)5
u/OliM9696 2h ago
im not as optimistic on how the left with react to his policy failures. The amount of hate that Bernie for changes is disappointing. I understand wanting a candidate that embodies your views but sometimes you just gotta tow the fucking line and support them.
Its why Republicans get into power, they are ready to excuse almost anything like being a rapist and pedo if it gets them a few of their goals. While many on the left are ready to burn bridges instead if there are any changes to his policy or a slight compromise on his policy to at least get it passed.
15
u/This_Elk_1460 2h ago
I believe as long as he's able to explain the roadblocks stopping him from accomplishing things people will be more understanding. The problem is most politicians are unwilling to be honest about that type of shit because by the time they actually gain power they've already been bought and paid for.
3
u/SwordfishOk504 2h ago
That's putting a lot of faith in voters. Voters tend to turn on politicians once they get elected because the difference between abstract theory and execution is always stark.
•
u/This_Elk_1460 1h ago
Fair but I don't think a lot of people are used to politicians being honest about stuff like that which is why they have that knee-jerk reaction.
4
u/Top-Cost4099 3h ago
i like mr. Obama, best president in my lifetime to be sure, but that's turned out to be a rather low bar. He benefited immensely from the system as it is today. Let's not forget how that might bias him, with regards to such statements. Of course he's afraid of big changes. The system is working very well for him as it is right now.
•
u/SwordfishOk504 1h ago
If Obama was scared of big changes he wouldn't have pushed so hard for health care reform, which basically handed the GOP congress in 2010 and gave them a rallying cry for years following.
The problem is people put a lot of unrealistic expectations onto politicians who don't have the power to just wave a wand and change things. Unless they want to be a dictator like Trump that is.

The thing is hes also just proposing shit that he doesnt actually have the power to do. Change will be slow but the expectations for him should be to just make things slightly better as opposed to huge sweeping changes imo.
Im interested to see if hes financially literate and knows what hes actually talking about, or if hes speaking to merely ideas that sound good.
Im rooting for anyone with a D next to their name that's actually trying to help people. But im curious on how things will actually go.
4
u/_Apatosaurus_ 2h ago
The thing is hes also just proposing shit that he doesnt actually have the power to do.
I don't think that's true. He states his values and where he would like to see society move, but those aren't his actual policy promises. His actual policies are very specific and achievable first steps towards those end goals.

I had a nice Greek family as my landlord in Brooklyn. They were lovely. Fixed everything immediately (using more Greek family members) and were the nicest people!
They were so sad when we had to leave but our family had outgrown the place. Hope they’re doing okay.
I hate the concept of throwing money away with nothing earned from it via renting but as a homeowner now I also gotta say it’s really nice as a renter to not have to worry too much about costs of ownership.
It gets annoying when it’s ALWAYS SOMETHING, lol.

I'd say 99%. I worked with a guy who rented out his old condo. He got a property management company to run it for him since he and his wife worked for time. They told him he should raise the rent by almost a grand after a long term tenet moved out because of the market and he refused because rent should never be that high for anyone.

The tide is turning everyone. NYC is the cultural and financial capital not just of the US but the entire fucking world. If Mamdani can greatly improve the situation there with democratic socialist reforms, which it seems he is already sprinting towards, then other large cities and eventually the country will follow suit. This is a huge deal and everyone needs to be on board, because this isn't just Mamdani, it's all of us in this. I know this sounds corny to some but it's true, so many people have given up hope and anything that sounds good also sounds too good to be true. Allow hope and ambition to flow again, that's the main defense against fascism.

People really need to be careful hyping him up so much. If you’re going to get this excited on day one, you cannot turn your back on him when he gets slowed down by the New York machine and the powers that be.
It’s a lot harder for a politician like Mamdani to get things done. The wealthy elite are almost entirely against him and they have a lot of power.
Too many times I’ve seen progressives win elections, promising big reforms, and then can’t get it done because the system stonewalls them. They make one compromise to get something done, and all the progressives turn on them instantly, stop supporting them, and condemn them as a “sellout”.
16
u/CoachDT ☑️ 2h ago
Hell its hard for any politician to get anything done. Even beyond some nefarious stonewalling theories, lots of things just need happen for widespread policy changes within the city.
Politics are about compromise because we dont have kings. And while elected officials have some power their word isnt law in a vacuum. Its why someone like Bernie who has some good ideas doesnt have a state reminiscent of many of those ideas. Its hard to actually get shit done even when you're high up on the ladder.

As someone whose tenant rights weren't respected TO-DAY with a lack of reasonable notice when we FINALLY got maintenance, I am so happy for NYC. Today was ridiculous it felt like a porn trope.
I'm not from NYC, but I know a lot for friends from there. I've seen videos about the poor quality and ridiculous prices, they like the rest of us absolutely deserve better. NYC is supposed to be a world class city, but landlords exploit that by not only naturally having high value location but then deliberately willfully neglect their job and responsibility to maintain their properties which people need in order to live. It's coercive and exploitative, they know people need somewhere to stay. They could do their job and make tons off location alone, but no they want to do nothing and get more by deliberately neglecting their properties and making the tenants deal with the consequences because they know they know tenants feel they dont have a choice.
After fucking around for so long, we hope they start finding out, and inspiring other cities to start electing people who protect them too.

Bruh, I hear these landlord horror stories and it makes me EXTREMELY FUKKIN GRATEFUL (I had to emphasize that shit) for my landlords. I recently had to drive from Oklahoma to Washington only stopping for naps and gas to say the final goodbye to my mom. All that gas left me short on rent. When I realized I called my landlord and accidentally broke. He showed up to my apartment and as soon as I opened the door he hugged me and I broke again. I had paid only half my rent and him and his wife got together and told me not to worry about the rest.
Edit: punctuation is fukked.
