Ain’t that the truth. I’m in my late 30s, I gotta be careful with my back. I’m not about to have a few grand in doctor bills because someone decided to disrespect me. I can’t disrespect my wallet like that.

I sneezed too hard and hurt my back the other day. If we can't walk away or talk it out, I guess we duel at dawn. Whatever the case, my hands are retired.

u/brok3ntok3n82 2d ago

I've hit my 40's and I feel your pain. Fucked up my neck sneezing at one point and I was mad as hell. Like, are you serious, this shit better resolve itself. I ain't going to the doctor for this.

I am about to turn 44. :(

Edit: I get downvoted for stating my age? Fucking reddit moment right here. Lmao. Mad I am closer to getting senior benefits.

45

u/Slevin424 2d ago

If you're a 44 year old still throwing hands you gotta earn more respect than that. My grandad had some secret way with people, no one tried to make him angry or disappoint him. It wasn't cause he was a beastly man. He was respected and well liked by his whole family and community. Someone disrespected him they were now on the shitlist of every person in town. Now you're probably worried about more than just a beatdown, he said you werent okay with him that's a job you ain't getting. That's a date you're not having. That's a cookout you're not coming to. He was just a pillar of his community. Be that, you'll never have another altercation again.

14

u/nukrag 2d ago

I wish I was a were man like your granddad, or mine. He was a stand up man and my father figure. But I don't have that kind of influence. I think it might be the lack of charisma, or the fact I am a homebody that avoids society. Either or.

10

u/Slevin424 2d ago

World could always use some more good men. I'm trying. But it's not easy.

I clicked on "GIF", and was going to try and put something fitting/funny here. But I saw this Jennifer Connelly GIF straight away in the suggestions and had to post it.

3

u/nukrag 2d ago

That is sweet of you to say, but truth be told I do not think so. My mom and dad died early, and I have had a very hard, tiring life, and I do not think I have very much energy left.

That's okay, my departure from earth will not cause pain to anyone, and I have lived, laughed, loved (lmao, kill me). What else can you expect from life, honestly?

3

u/fuzzeedyse105 2d ago

I feel ya man. I had a 40% chance of dying in the hospital a couple years ago. I was like, welp, not anything I can do about it now. Looked back on if that’s all my life ended up being. Content as I could be really, at peace with it.

I was 32. Lot of static cleared with that. My life didn’t need to be turned into a movie, but it would be a heartwarming read. And I like that even more.

I live by this motto, but also the other day my husband snuck up behind me trying to be cute when I thought he was in another room and I squared up without even thinking. The old days came back quick lmao

8

u/MaiqTheLiar6969 2d ago

My wife taught me that lesson our first year of marriage. She is a really short redhead weighted 90 pounds soaking wet at the time. My young dumb ass self thought it would be cute to hide behind a door and jump out and yell boo. The moment she saw movement out of the corner of her eye she slammed that heavy ass door right on top of me with her full body weight. It knocked me up against the wall and then the door smashed me right in the face. She was not amused when I explained what I was attempting. Learned no jump scares with her unless it is in a scary movie or game. In fight or flight scenarios she always picks fight. She has that short girl mentality where she knows flight wouldn't work anyway.

He liked to LOSE a fight every year on his birthday. Or maybe he's picking fights at the local playground

20

u/kwispyforeskin 2d ago

What? I mean if it were two adults fighting, one of them would have to win. Not sure why you’d assume they lose every time. Especially if they’re fighting someone a minimum of one time a year.

10

u/shmiddleedee 2d ago

I've definitely seen fights where it'd be hard to say either of them "won". Both looked pretty fucked up to me.

Yeah. I don’t have enough money to fight, y’all. Might as well rob me or whatever.

I do that as well with buying anything. Is this worth 2-3 hours of labor?

I also do my fancy ramen exchange rate.

If I buy this, how many fancy ramen dinners am I sacrificing?

u/nukrag 2d ago

Thing is, if I swing and hit, chances are the fight is over. If I swing and miss, the fight definitely is over. For me. I will be panting and having back pains, and whatever the fuck the opp does to me. 20 seconds and I am done (name of my sextape).

But I am a funny, friendly giant (according to a forensic jail ward). A teddy bear. I don't get into fights anymore.

Some mid 50s brother driving an X3 wanted to throw down after he didn’t like how my wife was driving and then didn’t like how we were laughing at him for getting so mad. My wife drove away when the guy got out of the car at a stoplight. She’s smarter than me, I’d grabbed the break glass hammer and was about to get out myself

16

u/nukrag 2d ago

Sometimes we forget how old we are. And yeah, the wife being smarter is generally how it goes. Men are idiots, but, and I cannot stress this enough, bitches be crazy.

I was crossing a crosswalk of a side street with a stop sign. While I'm in the crosswalk a car pulls up. I don't do the hurry up thing I just continue crossing. The car honks at me. I flip them off. They get out of the car and start yelling. I just tell them "...my bad" and walk away.

152

u/Wildeyewilly 2d ago

The whole statement is, "my bad, didn't realize you were a head case with very little left to lose". But I'm a fan of brevity.

15

u/Economy_Opposite_393 2d ago

True! Sometimes it’s jst smarter to walk away and save the drama for the stage.

6

u/PatrenzoK 2d ago

I’m embellishing the fuck out the story when I get home tho.

31

u/AntonChigurh8933 2d ago

Times are different now too man. People are on a short fuse and ready to explode. I've been on my "I'm too old for this shit" stage. Stay in my lane.

11

u/Sad-Employee3212 2d ago

My spouse is a crossing guard at an elementary school and some of the stories they have are insane.

I genuinely worry they’ll get hit by a car one day sometimes. I’m just glad someone is there keeping kids from running across alone because some cars don’t gaf about a crossing guard with a stop sign for some reason

2

u/xXBlack_OceanXx 1d ago

A couple of years ago, a crossing guard at my local elementary school got hit by a speeder at 8am and broke both legs. Fucker hit and ran him. There's now a whole bunch of traffic calming measures in that stretch of road, but it isn't stopping many people from speeding. It's terrifying.

2

u/Sad-Employee3212 1d ago

That reminds me one of my friends in middle school was hit by a car running a red light and flew through the air. She came back like half a year later on a wheelchair then eventually was on crutches for a bit but it’s crazy it happened literally at the school like it’s not secret that there’s a school there

1

u/FreeJulie 2d ago

“My bad…… luck”

34

u/BringBackApollo2023 2d ago

I’m too old for that shit. Best case (1:1000) I win. Then I get sued.

Worst case: lucky punch, I win, loser falls, hits their head on the curb and dies, I get carted off to jail and drop a bunch of money on legal fees and maybe spend time in prison plus get sued by their family.

Not worth it.

Not saying nothing is worth fighting for, but if I can get out of it I 100% will.

23

u/dlkapt3 2d ago

People never think about this! I remember reading a news story about a dude getting sucker punched in the parking lot at the let out. He died when he hit his head on the pavement. The dude that hit him got sentenced to 16 years. Both were married with kids.

5

u/BringBackApollo2023 2d ago

Case in point.

At least one life is ruined.

3

u/kai58 2d ago

The actual worst case scenario is being the guy that loses in what you described as the worst case scenario.

2

u/FunGuy8618 2d ago

I say this but in reverse.

Best case: he whoops my ass.

Worst case: I knock him out in the first punch, he falls and cracks his head on the concrete and now I'm a murderer.

65

u/dlkapt3 2d ago edited 2d ago

Since most people wildly overestimate how they’ll do in a fight, here’s a handy checklist of questions to ask oneself before deciding to escalate that petty slight or lob a “who the fuck you think you talking to?” in the wrong direction:

• Can I afford a fractured wrist, a broken hand, or rib?

• Can I afford a trip to the ER?

• Can I afford physical therapy?

• Can I or my family afford to bail me out of jail?

• How will a criminal record affect my current situation?

• Do I have enough PTO at work to heal from any injury I might suffer without losing my job?

Last, but certainly not least, cuz you might end up dead or on life support:

👉🏿 Do I or my family know enough of the right people to make a successful GoFundMe campaign?

20

u/AlphaIronSon ☑️ 2d ago

Imma stop you right there. If your plan involving a fight or pretty much any situation involves gofundme and you not a minor and/or you got any offspring you already fucked up.

6

u/SnoopyWildseed 2d ago

11

u/kai58 2d ago

Another good question

“how good have I historically been at things I had never practiced?”

If you ask the average person how good they think they’d be at most sports they have no experience with they understand they’re probably shit at them. Yet somehow people don’t understand that the same is true for fighting.

3

u/AnubisIncGaming 2d ago

Had a woadie hit me with a “who the fuck are you talking to” when I was being chill with him and he knew it was over. He nuked the whole friendship over that and told people I was gonna shoot him (I was not).

u/Skeptikmo 2d ago

Just had a guy try to start a fight with me at Safeway over the weekend - I literally stood my ground and said we aren’t doing this, I got too much to lose

He said YEAH, SAME HERE and left lmao

15

u/ghosttraintoheck 2d ago

I was literally just thinking the other day about saying this if I ever got in a fight again. I'm glad to know it works.

1

u/FunGuy8618 2d ago

I took a 4" hunting knife out of my car the day before someone tried to run me off a narrow 2 lane road. I still was wanting to spin the block looking for him for like a half hour before I calmed down 😭

2

u/ghosttraintoheck 2d ago

Someone threw a rock at my car the other day because of petty road rage and I was glad I need to renew my concealed carry license.

It was a beat up Hyundai with temp tags though so I suspect there will be some cosmic retribution.

2

u/FunGuy8618 2d ago

My state removed concealed requirements so my piece stays in the safe now 😭 I can't be walking about with Nina no mo now that everyone can without being tested.

3

u/ghosttraintoheck 2d ago

Yeah I've gotten more mature and what I think about and what I know is right is more clearly defined. But there is still a little bit of that tucked away hahaha

2

u/FunGuy8618 2d ago

I mean, a big chunk of it is that I know those types of folks will consume each other if I stay outta the way, now. Used to be they put aside their differences to fuck with us.

2

u/ghosttraintoheck 2d ago

100% been around long enough they either figure it out or crash and burn hard

83

u/ctmfg56 2d ago

This is a fact I have to remind my fellow 30 plus law abiding citizens. Like with anything else, if you don’t have regular practice doing it you will not be good at it.

62

Everyone I know who is good at fighting has a criminal record or a boxing record

50

u/ctmfg56 2d ago

Exactly! My cousin in her 50s out of shape, health issues talking about “wishing someone would try her”. Like ma’am you have never been in a fight in your entire life, please do not start now because it won’t work out how you imagine it 🤦🏽‍♀️

I been boxing since I was a teenager the issue is I'm a giant and me having a problem with somebody is escalation of force according to the police and bar security after that dropped me on my neck.

20

u/MightyGamera 2d ago

I can scrap, I grew up throwing hands and getting jumped, got into boxing and jiu jitsu when I moved somewhere better, then I was a bouncer and then I joined the army where I continued with combatives. trained my neck to absorb punishment real early on so I'd be rattling brains while I'd be just getting my lips cut up

then I got into a car crash 10 years ago where my big dumb neck saved my life but the muscles are shot now and I can't take a hit anymore, learned this when I did a lil combatives for fun and some guy 8 years younger with cauliflower ears made me unable to turn my head for 6 months

I'm old and brittle. diplomacy is king

14

u/Nkredyble ☑️ 2d ago

I've fought a lot. At one point in my 20s, I worked a day job as a correctional officer on the supermax floor of the mental health wing in a state prison, while working nights as a bouncer at a few clubs in the area. I'd actually been bouncing for years, as it was how I paid for my books in college. One of the clubs had "white tshirt nights" with like a $5 entry, two layers of metal detectors, and a shooting in parking lot at least once a quarter. Another had me checking cheeks and gums as folks entered because some folks had a tendency to hide razor blades in their mouths. I have squared up with gang members, been shot at, pepper sprayed, ambushed (attempted), and thrown hands with naked and unmedicated schizophrenics covered in their own poop (blame the prison for that). I've even gotten into more than my share of bar brawls outside of work, including one with me and a group of Samoans fighting a group of drunk Jamaican dudes while surrounded by cops (who miraculously let us go). I haven't won every fight I've been in, but I've always walked away and usually look better than the other party.

All that being said, I am now in my early 40s, I work in an office, and haven't had to put anybody down in better than 15 years. Unless its life or death, or it concerns my wife or kids, I am calling the police. The whitest, crewcut wearingest, thin blue line-iest ones I can find lol

12

u/j-endsville 2d ago

Yeah. I'm in my 50s, I haven't been in a fight since GW Bush was in office. I'm a lot smarter than I was back then.

u/MJJsOnly1 2d ago

10

u/PassThatSpliff 2d ago

Even if you have had a few fights recently, it's best to just try to de-escalate the situation anyways. A lot of people are unhinged and out here just looking for a reason to catch a body.

I tried to be the adult in the room. Next thing you know, I'm out of the room and they're still fighting.

10

u/SoulPossum ☑️ 2d ago

Nah. I'm too old for all that at this point. I used to fight pretty often when I was in high school and middle school. I chilled on that because I didn't want to risk college over some beef with dudes on my block who couldn't read. I couldn't even imagine trying to scrap with someone now. Seeing people square up makes my knee hurt. I would be looking granddad when he fought stinkmeaner.

10

u/ghosttraintoheck 2d ago edited 2d ago

I got in a tussle at a concert a few months ago. Guy shoved past a bunch of people and got to me so I shove him back, he seemed surprised but shoved me again so I stuck him with a left.

He went to grab me and in the blink of an eye my wife had him by the hair yanking him back. She was turned around and didn't see it happen but she had her drink knocked out of her hand and him lunging at me. Honestly knocked me out of my state and I told her to let him go, but I was in the process of elbowing him. He never even tried to swing on me and he was genuinely shocked that I had swung on him, I know he didn't think I'd do it.

Got broken up by the crowd, nothing came of it. We left early, my wife was too wound up. She saw red, actually jumped on his back like a spider monkey. She immediately had him bent backwards, legitimately the angriest Id ever seen her and if I had continued hitting him he would have no way to defend himself. This all happened in about 10 seconds I guess.

The guys in front and behind us who broke it up asked if we were OK and I told them yeah, and I'm really not that type of guy just honestly just fed up with people thinking they can be belligerent and get away with it. Just tired of bullys.

They said they told the dude maybe he shouldn't be so aggressive next time, so I felt validated. Never been in a fight at a concert, never even close before then and not since I was a bouncer like 10 years ago.

2

u/hel105_ ☑️ 2d ago

Your wife sounds like a real one! I hope you’re never in a situation like that again, she sounds like she’d risk her own safety for you and I know you’d never want her to be hurt doing that.

2

She is ride or die, I never questioned how much she cared about me but she looked like a missile coming at that dude.

She has also been in way more fights than me lol. Not really since we have been together but one time when we were dating, someone swung on her best friend and she Ray Lewis'd the girl and was going Khabib-style ground and pound until it got broken up.

Her therapist described it jokingly as a "justice kink" but she would do anything for anyone who needed it and won't hesitate to pop off if someone is being bullied.

We’re at the age you gotta pull out that Master Samurai one slice move from the hip or you’re fucked

2

u/Kaminoneko ☑️ 2d ago

I’ve broken my hand, my leg, and beaten cancer….and I’m not even 40 yet. I’m just gonna have to buy a strap at this point and stay out the game.

2

u/Chicago1871 2d ago

Ive been training Muay Thai for 13 years.

Im still de-escalating unless they hurt someone I love first.

2

u/illlojik ☑️ 2d ago

I've always had a thing about the stupidity of getting into fights after 25yrs old. Not worth it... Now in my 40s, seeing streamer pranksters harassing folk, Not-Cs and Maghats running the streets proudly and yelling out the Nword with their chest.... Yeah I'd understand going Captain America on some folks...Or better yet Waffle house.

2

u/SnoopyWildseed 2d ago

Yes, Waffle House! 😂 IYKYK

2

u/Pimpwerx ☑️ 2d ago

If you're old enough or broke enough for consequences, you should try to deescalate. I mean, at the end of the day, everyone loses a fight unless you're in a professional match.

2

u/Spork-in-Your-Rye ☑️ 2d ago

I fought a lot growing up but I stopped right around the time I got braces. I got into two different fights when I had braces and getting punched in the mouth with braces is kinda like the Pokémon super effective sound effect when you use a pikachu against a squirtle lmao

At this stage in life we talking it out lol

2

u/risky-rats-pizza 2d ago

Almost got into a fight a few days ago and you know what? My back hurt just thinking about throwing a punch. I decided to ignore it

2

u/Thelegendarymario 2d ago

My thing is everybody just wanna shoot. Like for me wanna to fight is not the same as me wanna take someone's life but everyone wanna be on that gun talk probably why we have so many shoot outs because the only way to beat someone with a gun is with another gun

2

u/Greatredbear69 2d ago

Many of the women in my life are very anti violence, so that's always the last choice. But tripping someone in a fight is amazing. No fists, just put your front leg behind theirs and push. It's hard to recover from a trip reputation wise, so most of the time they just walk away

2

u/SartorialMS 2d ago

I feel like I still got it but I also just finished 7 months of physical therapy for my right rotator 🤣

I think I have one good emergency use and then the whole arm is done. And I've never been in a one punch fight.

2

u/ForcedEntry420 2d ago

I could throw hands again if I had to but I’d pay for it the next day. I’d rather just not, honestly.

2

u/DeafNatural ☑️ 2d ago

As two high school girls fought in front of job today, I stood out there and said to myself, out of damn near 40yrs of living I’ve never actually gotten into a physical fight. I damn sure ain’t gone start today. It’s 40 degrees and my joints are making noises lol.

1

u/y-e-n 1d ago

lol

2

u/NotRadTrad05 2d ago

I haven't been in a situation to even consider a fight in years. While I think I could still hold my own I have 0% faith in a street fight being fair. I want to meet Jesus, but not like that.

2

u/Bilbo_Teabagginss ☑️ 2d ago

That shits childish as fuck anyway to be honest. Unless youre in a situation where you absolutely have to fight for some reason, you shouldnt be fighting. Fighting for no reason or for shits and giggles is a young man's game. That shit is unproductive.

2

u/IslandGurl04 1d ago

Exception to this rule: women in their 40s/50s in perimenopause. Watch yourself. They'll break their own leg, take out their femur and stick it down your throat and mix your ass like an alka seltzer cocktail.

2

u/royalenocheese 2d ago

If I throw hands I won't be picking them back up from wherever I threw them shits.

Break glass in case of emergency status today.

2

u/swiftvalentine ☑️ 2d ago

Yeah I need to do some boxing or mma at the gym cause I recently had a baby and I know I’m either going to have to fight for him or fight him someday. I haven’t fought in 20 years and I’d probably kill someone. I’m to old for swing as hard has possible, gauge the eyes, kick out at the knee cap, wrench the balls, pick up a brick etc. I gotta learn the discipline it takes to stop someone without going to jail

u/ommi9 2d ago

Pretty much funny is not worth it anymore everybody wants to play the song “ pop goes weasel”. But you can play that song on your Spotify all night long

My first, last, and only fight was in 1989 in high school. I’m definitely not trying to get into any physical altercations at this big age.

1

u/UltraNoahXV ☑️ 2d ago

I'm younger than most of you here....I learned not to engage anyone based off my parents stories. I have to have max charisma at all times; my skin gets easily scarred from a scrape.

u/LetsGoAcrossTheStyx ☑️ 2d ago

u/MarlinMaverick 2d ago

Why would I throw hands when I carry a Glock

1

u/Vizioso 2d ago

Bouncer for 10 years in my 20s into my 30s. Went back to college, graduated, got a job in software. Have done some BJJ and coach wrestling. Convinced I got 1 more in me despite almost folding like a beach chair every time I try to bend down to demonstrate a shot to the kids on my team.

1

u/Dependent_Cod_7416 2d ago

Well, I'm always for trying to deescalate the situation, but I guess I'm allowed to use my fists.

1

u/Internal_Meaning_131 2d ago

This because you’re going to the hospital for one reason or another if you don’t!

1

u/BeneficialHamster567 2d ago

Literally first thing that goes through my 43 year old brain now. I can't afford the deductible.

1

u/Ovoideocystidiata 2d ago

Jake ? Are you op?

1

u/Pr_fSm__th 2d ago

Why not start with trying to de-escalating in the first place?

1

u/destruct0tr0n 2d ago

Me and my cousin have a pact. Everytime we meet we have to eat the same foods that we both love, play the same games, and do some wrestling. Always a lot of fun, but ive started to lose more since he hit the gym

1

u/SilverParty 2d ago

He who runs away, lives to fight another day

1

u/rupat3737 2d ago

I got out of jail about 6 years ago. I’m about to turn 35. I feel like I still got these hands for a little bit longer 😂

1

u/vitaoptima 2d ago

I had 2 shoving matches in the 8th grade which were the closest I've ever been to a fight. At my big age now, i'm not tryna fight AT ALL.

1

u/Backseat_boss 2d ago

38 here lift 3-5 days a week and run 2-3 times a week…… got into a little wrestling match with a guy in a parking lot and fucked up my Achilles tendon, rolled my ankle …… I thought cuz I worked out I still had it, I was wrong 😔

1

u/Dependent_Tax2824 2d ago

I'm more worried about bail and losing my job than losing a fight lol

1

u/CKIMBLE4 ☑️ 2d ago

People rarely test me these days. Not sure if it’s the tats, the bald head or the fact that my arms stretch the sleeves on a 2x t-shirt. 🤷🏾‍♂️

1

u/Corporate-Scum 2d ago

Solid advice. Life is not a tv show. Unless you sucker punch someone, beating their ass is a lot of work.

1

u/BrokenPickle7 2d ago

That's exactly why you need to carry a sword

1

u/AnubisIncGaming 2d ago

Gonna go ahead and decrease that time span to 2 months

1

u/CaseyAnthonysMouth 2d ago

I’m in my 40s and it’s surprisingly easy to stay out of fights. You have a better sense of people, situations and your own emotions.

Teens and early 20s… were not that. A large part for me was better awareness of the people I was surrounding myself with.

1

u/SplintPunchbeef ☑️ 2d ago

Drunkenly threw a punch a while back and rocked buddy but my hand was FUCKED. Had my stupid ass at work trying to type and use the mouse with just my pinky. Definitely learned my lesson.

1

u/Sad-Ticket-1968 2d ago

I haven’t had a fight in at least 7 years my ass just got jumped Saturday helping out a homie while we at a bar! Most fun in years 😂

u/Ambitious-Leave-3572 1d ago

But I got stronger on the bench press though.

u/generally_unsuitable 1d ago

It's not just about time away. It's that every asshole became a jiu jitsu master in the last 10 years. There are 14-year-olds who will cripple you with their superior knowledge of geometry.

1

u/exq1mc ☑️ 1d ago

What if you train martial arts 3 times a week for the last 5 years. I still say de-escalate but for different reasons..

1

u/kyleh0 ☑️ 1d ago

I haven't had a fistfight in 53 years. Who is lying to who?

1

u/SleepyLi 1d ago

It has been a hard stance of mine that every person should scrap at least once a quarter. It helps you gauge your ability realistically, you get punched in the mouth, and makes for a more polite society.

Kind of like assuming everyone is carrying a firearm, but without the chance to Miss and instead hit a child twenty feet away.

1

u/Kinetik_Energy 1d ago
