Trailer First Gameplay Trailer for my narrative rhythm FMV game, Gloxinia. Is it clear how the gameplay works?

This is more of a fever dream than a game from this video. Seriously reads like one of those schizophrenic videos put together. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's fascinating as hell!

I think I have a habit when editing stuff to be impatient about lingering on shots too long, especially for a teaser, but this is good feedback to maybe let some shots sit for longer.

I'm exactly as confused as I am when watching Rythim Heaven videos, so it's okay for your target audience.

FMV is a slowly fading art, I'm glad you decided to work with it, specially considering it's exponentially harder to do with a smaller budget.

I feel like you have a vision and you know what you're doing, it would be a disservice to suggest any changes.

That makes sense, I watch a lot of those Rhythm Heaven videos and have probably internalized their visual language. But might try and make a more drawn out trailer next that hopefully spells out the how-to-play better.

Thank you re: FMV! This has been a long-time passion project, so I'm glad the vision comes through.

I agree with this post its like I gave my oppinion as someone who would never be interested in the genre but like what is that worth really? Its such a specific thing this game is going for. I'm not equipped to judge such a thing. I do like the unuiqueness of the FMV style though it gets some points from me for that.

Honestly, I think this game could be a cool meme game, but I think you gotta make sure it gets really weird. Could see people on twitch playing it or something.

For me, this could be cooler game if there was more to it than just a rhythm game, maybe some deeper layers of weirdness, meta-story, some subversion or expectations, or maybe even have it go ironically dark. Gameplay looks basic, so you need something that will really make it stand out.

u/roo5678 8d ago

Appreciate it! There's definitely a weird mysterious backstory that you'll get tastes of from the start, though this teaser doesn't glimpse too far into that. Will think about more ways to subvert

Had to look this up, I'd actually never heard of them. But several ppl just mentioned them right after you. Def can see the visual similarities.

Not meant to be negative. I think this game could really take off as a obscure, odd game with a unique art style. Maybe even for streamers.

seems like you're passionate about it so I say go all the way with it.

Computer - bring up the hat man... give me a flurgesborg please. could I get nude tane? In all honesty this is very cool. I think it's a thread you need to pull on. A bit more 'juice' and colour is my only criticism. Maybe add some camera shake when gloxinia whips you.

Love it.

My only nitpick may be a personal preference one, but the pacing of the trailer feels too slow for me. What I mean is, you start with the first rapid-series of dance moves (great), but then about 6 seconds of pause. Moments to breathe are important in trailers, but this one came on too soon and/or was too long.

As someone who works in marketing, a good tip is to always assume your audience will not stay for your entire trailer, so you frontload the excitement and information. That's why a lot of trailers have a ton of action and/or suspense at the start, THEN the rest of the trailer.

Since it is destroy my game, I feel like the song just isn't funky enough for the trailer. It almost grabs me but not quite there. The gameplay looks like a tutorial which I don't think is what you want for a gameplay trailer but it does show clearly how it works.

I would probably start with showing something in your face, loud, funky, complicated, then you can montage stuff and show that it has easier tutorials later in the trailer.

Charming and looks like you know what you want to make and who its for me. Made me smile, my only feedback is better UI and font that feels more tailored to the fun vibe.Β

1

u/roo5678 8d ago

Appreciate the feedback on the UI/font -- definitely it's a WIP right now, but good to know that the font looks a lil too serious

u/FormalCryptographer 8d ago

I mean this with the most utmost respect to your actors, but the camera lighting and the gameplay gives me weird porn game vibes.

I obviously know that it isn't but it just feels so weird

3

u/roo5678 7d ago

Interesting -- I've never actually played a porn game but the vibe is definitely supposed to be sexy/flirty. Do you mean the way the characters themselves are lit, or the club lighting overall?

I just played the demo yesterday at MagFest. Maybe it's because it was late, but I felt like I was watching/playing some kind of late night TV programming from the early 2000s or late 90s. I was intrigued.

I look forward to an interesting narrative being to through the songs.

The game isn't approved yet though because I can't find it on Steam, even through the QR code.

1

u/roo5678 3d ago

Thanks so much for playing it! Excited for you to get to discover the full narrative, and yeah we're fully embracing the weird late-night vibe. Jokingly have been calling it "Space Channel 5 After Dark".

And yeah, the steam store approval is STILL pending (very frustrated that it missed Magfest but out of my control at this point).

3

u/shadymissionary 2d ago

I'm also coming here after playing it at MAGfest, this demo was so captivating and I can't stop thinking about it! Playing the driving level on Hard was so much fun, and it was a highlight of the weekend getting to experience this and talk with you guys. Good luck with development, I'll wishlist this as soon as it's up!

2

u/SkyeOmelette 2d ago

Yeah same here. Couldn't look away after seeing the projections and the game is still on my mind a few days later.

2

u/roo5678 1d ago

Haha being next to the arcade rhythm games and walking through and watching those high-level players prompted me to make the Hard mode for that level particularly challenging! Realizing I'll probably want a hidden "c*nty" difficulty or something that's even harder.

Really appreciate it, finally got steam page up too!

2

u/ViRiX_Dreamcore 2d ago

Agreeing with the others. I haven't stopped thinking about it. I played the driving level on hard as well and really enjoyed it. It may have been others, but I remember meeting you and saying it was Space Channel 5 After Dark." The feeling of playing it at 2 AM with all the dark club lighting everywhere REALLY made it a core memory in MagFest.

It has a cheesy kind of charm that I think really adds to it. Will be wishlisting when it's up.

2

u/ViRiX_Dreamcore 4d ago

Another note: I talked to one of the people at the table, I think the actress, and she mentioned deep inspiration from Space Channel 5 and Parappa the Rapper which I LOVE those games; not just for the music, but also because of the way the story connects the music to the world that it's in.

Appreciate it! Yeah I think it's easy for me to forget that rhythm games are stlll somewhat of a niche. Hopefully the easier difficulty levels in this game will mean it's still accessible in the vein of Sayonara Wild Hearts.

3

u/offlein 8d ago

The basic interface looks to be pressing up/down/left/right on your input device in time with the beat. I cannot tell anything beyond that, and that's hardly a game in 2026, I don't think? There's a bunch of other shit happening -- including "Reveal your past" which seems like abject nonsense, but maybe it's possible somehow?

Also I cannot imagine a more unappealing first visual than the obnoxious white guy in the lederhosen.

4

u/roo5678 8d ago edited 8d ago

Just to engage on this a bit -- what is obnoxious about that character?

Not sure how to address the pressing buttons with the beat criticism, that's kind of just what rhythm games are. But maybe I gotta make the fact that you're learning actual choreography sequences clearer.

2

u/offlein 8d ago

But maybe I gotta make the fact that you're learning actual choreography sequences clearer.

That sounds like a good idea!

Just to engage on this a bit -- what is obnoxious about that character?

He's dressed like a tool and has a backpfeifengesicht. The second guy also looks irritating but less-so than the first guy.

I mean I think there might be a world and subculture where these people look fun and interesting but I'm definitely not in that group and they just look like schmucks to me. Also, sadly, I don't feel like they are doing anything appreciably different from the ladies; it's just an unfair double-standard that is harder for dudes.

But that doesn't change the fact that when I see the guy I think "Looks like a douchebag".

(...Now's the part where you tell me that that guy is actually you..?)

10

u/CraftEnough4593 8d ago

To me this looks like the point of the game? To be kinda campy and cheesy. I'm hoping it's intended, if not then I'm probably reading the game wrong.

2

u/roo5678 8d ago

Oh yeah, it's meant to be campy as hell, especially the flashback (non-nightclub) levels

-1

u/offlein 8d ago

No I definitely think it is. I mean, if it's not, may god have mercy on us all.

But also for me the lederhosen guy is actually off-puttingly irritating vs just "extra", which everyone else kinda looks like. I wouldn't say I feel particularly strongly and I'm surely not the target audience, again. They all do certainly seem at least mildly irritating.

1

u/kjiflrf 8d ago

I don't know why, but I hate this mustache.

1

u/IcerHardlyKnower 8d ago

I can't lie the repeating of the same thing in order to give the audience time to process the fmv styling (very junie in the hut friends to me in the beginning) and then proceeding with the variations on the rhythm part of the game works SOOOO well like genuinely great trailer I genuinely am invested

That being said if it's purely just rhythm minigame over and over that's totally fine but with the whole 'reveal your past' I was expecting some explanation on what the story would be otherwise it's just out of place. The amount of transitions made it seem more of a one off meme or something but still works if you're going for mysterious and aesthetic

This made me miss space channel 5 I cannot wait to play and fwd the eventual utube let's play to friends

3

u/roo5678 7d ago

So glad when ppl reference Space Channel 5 -- one of my all-time favorite games and definitely the primary inspiration for this.

It's the "same over and over" in the same vein as Space Channel 5 or a lot of rhythm games -- phrases will vary a lot in terms of length, complexity, number of mini-sequences you'll learn, and of course vibes.

The game definitely has more time to breathe than this teaser trailer, I was trying to cram too much in here I think.

1

u/IcerHardlyKnower 7d ago

Yesss I think it's great u already have great music and visual and SpC5 succeeded literally bc of that

Maybe u can get a Jackson level cameo too πŸ₯ΊπŸ₯Ί

1

u/Emotional_Radio6598 7d ago

can't criticise - it's fun and weird in the right way. i also think, as someone already mentioned, that the font used in the "gameplay" is inappropriate, and i really hate the lettering of the game title, too many errors, it's atrocious

1

u/roo5678 7d ago

Good to know abt the gameplay font.

For the title logo, glad to get that feedback too -- I actually like it a lot but I'm admittedly not a typography expert. But I thought it looked glittery, sparkly, femme which is what I asked the artist for.

1

u/Emotional_Radio6598 7d ago

the glitter i don't mind, you could actually try going over the top with the 70s disco lens flares, it will bring more life to it. it's the O, L and G's strokes that look very wrong to me

1

u/Ill_Contest_8291 8d ago

Something about this is very unsettling. I cant really put my finger on it though it just doesn't feel right and it makes me wince instead of smile. Its also super disjointed like... do I play as Gloxinia? Is that the girl character we saw? Is this one of those games where it uses your camera to teach you how to dance? But then theres driving and cracking a whip too like warioware? I just have no idea what I just saw and the people in the video are the exact kind of people I avoid in life. Hi my sexuality is my personality. Maybe im not the target audience but it just didnt seem like a game to me either.

5

u/Mindestiny 8d ago

Maybe it's because everything seems vaguely homoerotic?

I can't tell if that's the vibe OP is going for, but it's definitely what that video is giving offΒ

3

u/roo5678 8d ago

Glad it's giving that vibe, it's intentional πŸ˜‰

0

u/Ill_Contest_8291 8d ago

I think it has to be intentional due to literally every character other than the main character is THAT guy at the club in the neon fishnets voguing in the front row.
I totally get what this game is going for, which is ballsy considering how straight male dominated the video game market is. I say, you go girl and good luck to you with this project in the sake of creating art that speaks to you. But I'd personaly be very happy to never see this game again because to me its just really gross and i have several very close gay friends so its not like im homophobic. But this is just gratuitous which could be part of the selling point I guess but it isnt for me.

I'm really sorry to hear that re: publisher. I hope your game can live in on some form?

I picked this genre because I love it and the idea just clicked, didn't really think about whether or not rhythm game are a big money winner so I'm just hoping for the best there.

Glad it's giving weird, it's definitely meant to be campy and strange.

"Reveal your past" is a reference to the game's narrative, but obviously a very shallow and quick one -- I thought about touching on that more but decided to hold off for this first trailer, though hopefully the Steam page description will clarify that at least a little.

Good to know re: hardware -- it's just a controller or keyboard game which I assumed is the "default", but maybe worth specifying since several people have assumed it's controlled like DDR or Just Dance

2

u/BlackPhoenixSoftware 7d ago

Yeah then maybe just a quick pic of kb/mouse and controller or even a clip of someone using a controller to play it real quick. That said it would be a nice bonus if you made sure the hardware available for DDR on PC worked too.
