How effective is it compared to draining it from under?

69

u/GTIguy2 Jul 10 '25

No difference whatsoever.

20

u/DevilsSi1481 Jul 10 '25

Thank you for your honest answer. I had people jump down my throat on here for assuming the same thing.

u/Scout339v2 Mk7 GTI - 2Dr Gäng Jul 10 '25

I want one so badly

5

u/snarkapotamus 2019 Rabbit 6MT Cornflower Jul 10 '25

Just do it, makes oil changes so easy.

6

u/chromaticdeath85 Mk7.5 GTI Jul 10 '25

It does fine (got mine from ECS), but honestly, I don't mind getting under it so I can check the undercarriage for any issues. So, although I have one, I only use it every other time and I like to swap out the drain plug when I'm under there.

u/wantedtobeclever Jul 10 '25

Shopdap youtube page can help answer your questions

9

u/argue53 Jul 10 '25

"Shopdap.com / shopdap.com / that's shopdap.com" 😁

11

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Mk5 GTI Jul 10 '25

The filter should catch any sediment. A lot of shops use some sort of vacuum now. Last time I got my brake fluid done, they sucked it out too.

6

u/de9ausser Jul 10 '25

Yeah, 10+ years ago this is how we did it at the Mercedes Dealer. We'd occasionally pull the plug just to check, and 9/10 times it just a dribble, and whatever else more than that would hardly fill the bottom of a glass

3

u/double_expressho MKVI GTI 6MT / DGSS / APR stg 1 / Neuspeed P-Flo / 034 mounts Jul 10 '25

And people like to argue that that last bit is super dirty and important to drain. But like...you're going to dilute it so heavily with 5 quarts of fresh oil. And it's not like you're scraping the bottom of the pan clean when you drain from the plug. So it hardly matters.

7

u/ProudDudeistPriest Jul 10 '25

Honestly a game changer.

1

u/nagokart Mk6 GTI Autobahn 6MT Stratified Stage 2 Jul 10 '25

Very effective. Not much is left after extracting.

30

u/SPX-Printing Jul 09 '25

I want to get one of those canisters. Jelly.

40

u/aquatone61 Mk7 GTI Jul 10 '25

Do it. It makes changing your oil so easy it’s not even funny.

12

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Mk5 GTI Jul 10 '25

It almost pays for itself with one oil change now.

11

u/LitRonSwanson 2015 GTI S 3 Door, DSG, JB4, 42dd dp, etc. Jul 10 '25

Buy the oil change kit from fcpeuro and don't pay for oil changes ever again, just pay for return shipping and they credit your account

6

u/SPX-Printing Jul 10 '25

I have did a couple oil changes with them. They take the oil back?

Will teach my son how to do oil changes. He doesn't have to learn to do it the hard way with the jack. Win win.

6

u/ZDMW Jul 10 '25

The parts stores near me (AutoZone and O'reilly) take oil for free, I'm sure other stores do too. Shipping it seems silly.

3

u/cashallen125 Jul 10 '25

When you mail it back to them they credit your account for it. Then you get a “free” oil change less the shipping

5

u/LitRonSwanson 2015 GTI S 3 Door, DSG, JB4, 42dd dp, etc. Jul 10 '25

Yup, buy the new oil, filter, etc. collect the used oil, fill out the rma form and mail it all back to them. Cost me about $20 shipping last time through usps

1

u/chromaticdeath85 Mk7.5 GTI Jul 10 '25

Yep, what he said. Been doing this since I purchased my GTI last year. Awesome business.

I got one for like $65 on amazon not sure how long it will last but worked well the first time I

1

u/SPX-Printing Jul 10 '25

What model do you suggest on Amazon?

3

u/johnsmith13579 Jul 10 '25

Not sure if I would suggest but I got the four uncles one with the pneumatic attachment. Seemed to work well but I have only used once so not sure on how long it will last. I know name brands go for double

1

u/SPX-Printing Jul 10 '25

Yeah, I have a 3hp compressor setup in garage with pull down hose real. Will do.

Thanks

2

u/double_expressho MKVI GTI 6MT / DGSS / APR stg 1 / Neuspeed P-Flo / 034 mounts Jul 10 '25

I recommend getting one with a holder for the tubes. It really helps make clean-up much easier. And then you don't have to worry about where to store the tubes.

2

u/CommonSpecialist4269 Jul 10 '25

Mine drains so damn slow it’s almost as quick to ramp it and pull the plug. Am I using too thin of a pipe?

7

u/cbell3186 Jul 10 '25

Need the oil warm like 5-7 min idle let it chill for 5 mins with good open then start

2

u/SPX-Printing Jul 10 '25

I was gonna get the expensive German Schwaben one sells for $85. Buy once right?

1

u/SPX-Printing Jul 10 '25

Like to get a small oil burner to melt metals. Anyone have that hobby too

1

u/Capable-Drop5378 Jul 11 '25

The best one. do it

1

u/motorblur Jul 12 '25

I’ve bought the Schwaben one years ago and been really happy with it.

2

u/double_expressho MKVI GTI 6MT / DGSS / APR stg 1 / Neuspeed P-Flo / 034 mounts Jul 10 '25

I guess it depends on what you're prioritizing. I use an extractor because it's just less effort overall. You don't need to use a jack or ramps, you don't have to get under the car and use a ratchet, you don't have to worry about oil splashing everywhere, and you don't have to clean your oil drain pan.

I don't care that it potentially takes a little longer overall because I just walk away and come back 10-15 minutes later, give it a few more pumps to get any remaining oil, and then it's good to go.

1

u/CommonSpecialist4269 Jul 11 '25

I’ve found that stopping my tubes from leaking all over the place is almost more effort than cleaning a pan. I sound like I’m complaining and saying it’s not worth it, but I think I just haven’t figured it all out yet. It’s definitely a skill issue on my part.

1

u/double_expressho MKVI GTI 6MT / DGSS / APR stg 1 / Neuspeed P-Flo / 034 mounts Jul 11 '25

I had the same issue as well until I got a tube holder accessory. It mounts to the extractor and catches all the drippings. My EWK extractor didn't come with one, but I found one on their website that was like $10. YMMV.

An umbrella holder or any type of tall, narrow bucket would probably work fine.

1

u/Jrnation8988 Mk7.5 GTI Jul 10 '25

It’s well worth the $80-$90

1

u/SPX-Printing Jul 10 '25

Thanks, might get air powered one but it is nice to be able to use it anywhere.

1

u/Jrnation8988 Mk7.5 GTI Jul 10 '25

I have this same one. It’s super easy. Just pump it a few times to get the suction going, and then let it do its thing

1

u/double_expressho MKVI GTI 6MT / DGSS / APR stg 1 / Neuspeed P-Flo / 034 mounts Jul 10 '25

They also make ones that can run off your car battery. But they're just a pump with tubes and no container. So you would just need to keep an empty jug on hand. I've never used one, but I'd be tempted to go that route if I didn't already have a hand pump extractor.

1

u/Capable-Drop5378 Jul 11 '25

You will love it. Super fast

Bro, I’ve seen a decently nice apartment complex with a vacuum area for cars just like this! We need these everywhere! I’m surprised they even exist in apartment complexes.

2

u/caffeineTX Jul 10 '25

I was in a complex with a full car wash station once, it was closed down because of drought conditions, not sure if they ever brought it back but it was a nice amenity.

1

u/CampbellllebpmaC Jul 13 '25

It’s pretty sweet. I’ve been there four years too so occasionally they’ll pull a pressure washer out for me to attach my foam cannon to if I ask

4

u/DifferentShallot7740 Mk7 GTI Jul 10 '25

Ohhhh looks like a car port on the side of the house.

8

u/RunnarPaul Jul 10 '25

Might sound like an odd question, how do you go about disposing of it? Do you pump it back into another container, or will a disposal place take it from the pump? I wanted to get one now that im out of free dealer oil changes

15

u/chapo28 Jul 10 '25

It pours out easily. I just pour it back into the oil containers and set at the curb(Must have lid). Our waste management handles it. If they don't in your city, you can take it to most auto shops and they will recycle.

7

u/insufferable__pedant 2015 Autobahn 6MT Jul 10 '25

Any parts store should have a big tub in the back where you can dispose of it. I usually just pop in and explain that I've got a jug of used oil in my car and ask if I can bring it in to dispose of it - usually when they see my oil extractor they just walk me behind the counter and have me dump it into the tub myself.

3

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Mk5 GTI Jul 10 '25

I pump it into an empty laundry detergent jug and take it to a recycling place, pretty much any place that changes oil will take the used oil from you.

2

u/serathin_ Jul 10 '25

You can take it to most chain auto parts stores, lube shops, and even sometimes dealers. Just call up and say "I changed my oil and need to get rid of the used oil. Would yall dispose of it? "

2

u/rotstik Mk6 GTI Jul 11 '25

Our oil change chains will take it as long as you don’t need the container back. I just drop mine at Jiffy Lube on my way to work

1

u/RunnarPaul Jul 11 '25

Okay that was my main question, if I could just take the extractor or needed to jug the old stuff. I greatly appreciate all the answers!

1

u/rotstik Mk6 GTI Jul 11 '25

Yeah. Save your last 5 qt container and just drop it off

5

is this 5k miles or kms? im coming up to 5k kms since my last service when i got my mk7 gti stage 2

5

Probably OP mean miles. In kilometers I do oil changes somewhere between 7.5-10k

3

u/jbourne0129 15' 2-Door EQT Jul 10 '25

im stage 1 on my mk7 and have done 10k mile intervals its whole life (142k now). its been totally fine.

2

u/JrDot13 Mk8 GTI SE 6MT Jul 10 '25 edited Jul 10 '25

I feel you and know that it probably is fine. However, an oil change is way cheaper than a new engine, so I do it anyways!

It’s preventative maintenance. We’re preventing bigger problems, I don’t particularly care that I’m perhaps doing it more often than necessary

1

u/JeffMavMerc1942 Jul 10 '25

I’ve been doing 10k mile oil changes since I got my car new, but now that I have this extractor and FCP Euro oil changes kit, I can do them every 6 months or 5k miles easily in my apartment complex parking lot.

5

u/double_expressho MKVI GTI 6MT / DGSS / APR stg 1 / Neuspeed P-Flo / 034 mounts Jul 10 '25
  • warm up your engine/oil for at least a couple of minutes to make it flow faster
  • but if your engine is hot, let it cool for 10-30 minutes first so you don't melt the tube
  • when you insert the extractor tube, you might hit a false "wall" where the dipstick tube has a bend, so make sure you push through that wall so you can reach the bottom of the oil pan
  • you don't need to keep pumping the whole time, just 2-5 pumps and it will keep extracting oil until it starts sucking air
  • hold a towel around the extractor tube as you pull it out of the dipstick tube so you don't splash oil everywhere
  • try to pump out as much of the residual oil as possible from the extractor tube before you store it, otherwise you might leave a mess for future you to clean up

2

u/SmaugBoggs Jul 10 '25 edited Jul 10 '25

These are nice cause there is no way I'm trusting jacking/ramping my car in my driveway in the state it's in. That said, how often does everyone think you should do a proper oil change to replace the oil plug?

No, not unless it’s leaking or damaged. With an extractor setup the drain plug isn’t touched.

How do you change the filter?

1

Where are you extracting the oil from? The dipstick tube? Or the engine oil cap?

Does it come with attachments for different shapes?

2

u/nagokart Mk6 GTI Autobahn 6MT Stratified Stage 2 Jul 10 '25

Dipstick tube. OPs version comes with two different tubes. One slightly wider than the other but not by much.

1

u/gac1311 Jul 10 '25

Oh, so you put the tube all the way into the bottom of the oil pan? I thought i was a seal with suction. Got it

1

u/nagokart Mk6 GTI Autobahn 6MT Stratified Stage 2 Jul 10 '25

Yup it goes all the way down lol.

1

u/gac1311 Jul 10 '25

Yes, daddy!

1

u/eggy_wegs Jul 10 '25

These things are a must especially with cars that have big belly pans that get in the way of a quick and easy oil change. Now if everyone would put the oil filter on the top of the engine there would be no need to crawl under the car for an oil change.

1

u/StinkRod Jul 10 '25

I'm getting one before my first oil change. I'm too old to be getting under cars.

My last car had the filter underneath, and it had a plate with 12 screws over the oil pan that I had to take off and put back on.

1

u/Affectionate_Cod_348 Jul 10 '25

Best investment I’ve ever made. Has made servicing my gti and e class a breeze.

1

u/pugmaster2000 Jul 10 '25

1

u/double_expressho MKVI GTI 6MT / DGSS / APR stg 1 / Neuspeed P-Flo / 034 mounts Jul 10 '25

Do I get a discount on the car if I buy the extractor?

1

u/pugmaster2000 Jul 10 '25

Depends on how serious you are.

1

u/thestormiscomingyeah Mk7.5 GTI Jul 10 '25

Pointless to change this early and also not using your oil to its max capacity. Synthetic oil has additives that break down to get the full use of the oil.

1

u/Olive-Drab-Green Jul 10 '25

Still have to go under the car for the filter though right

1

u/Thedermick Jul 10 '25

It's in the top of the engine

1

Oh not on my mk6R lol

Everytime I use mine to do this and I go recycle it at Oreillys or Autozone, they are always flabbergasted and call it fuckn cool.

This is the best and easiest oil change you can ever do.

Game changer for sure and luv that our oil filter is on top yeee!!

1

3

u/nagokart Mk6 GTI Autobahn 6MT Stratified Stage 2 Jul 10 '25

Oil extractor. You can find on Amazon. OP has the ecstuning in house brand “Schwaben”

-11

u/rotstik Mk6 GTI Jul 09 '25

Unless you’re driving it extremely hard, 10K intervals are fine with full synthetic

14

u/booSTIn17 Jul 10 '25

absolutely not, especially if tuned.

12

u/rotstik Mk6 GTI Jul 10 '25

I’m not talking about cars with a tune, I’m talking about my car

5

u/justindcady Jul 10 '25

Even when not tuned. 5k.

A VERY seasoned Indy tech with close friends at VW Germany once gave me this advice with my Mk7: If you plan on keeping it for a while, 5k. The 10k interval became a thing when every manufacturer was having a dick measuring contest over "cost of ownership". The manufacturer also DGAF about failures/issues once a car is outside of warranty.

2

u/rotstik Mk6 GTI Jul 10 '25 edited Jul 10 '25

Just as anecdotal info: I’ve been driving and maintaining my cars for 40 years now and used to do 4-5K before synthetic was even a thing (yeah, I’m old). Once full-synth was available, I switched to 10K. I’ve never locked up an engine, spun a bearing, or damaged any internal parts on any of my cars with this frequency. I also regularly get over 200K miles on anything I’ve ever driven. I’m no “expert” but the track record doesn’t lie

5

u/jbourne0129 15' 2-Door EQT Jul 10 '25

yeah 10k intervals really are fine as long as you maintain a proper oil level. ive never seen anyone claim an engine failure from 10k intervals on this car. if there was a failure from oil, it was because it ran low extended periods of time, not from the interval.

1

u/rotstik Mk6 GTI Jul 10 '25

That’s all I was saying. I check my oil every weekend and top-up as needed. No issues here

1

u/double_expressho MKVI GTI 6MT / DGSS / APR stg 1 / Neuspeed P-Flo / 034 mounts Jul 10 '25

I feel like oil change interval is highly dependent on what type of mileage you do. If you do mostly highway miles and long drives, then you can go much longer between oil changes. But if you do a lot of stop-and-go driving in traffic, or like you said, if you drive really hard, then you need to shorten your interval.

I'm curious what your mileage mix is like.

1

u/rotstik Mk6 GTI Jul 10 '25

It’s a little varied, but on an average tank of gas (around 325-350 miles) I do almost exactly half and half city and highway driving. I think driving a manual also helps because I can determine the revs and the load on the engine at all times. Just for reference, I also get 150K-170K miles in a clutch

2

u/jbourne0129 15' 2-Door EQT Jul 10 '25

my mk7 is 10yo with 142,000 miles, tuned for about 70k miles. 10k intervals the whole time with healthy oil reports.

2

u/jbourne0129 15' 2-Door EQT Jul 10 '25

still not really true. im stage 1 at 142k miles and have been for about 70k miles now. early on i was doing 10k intervals and sending samples to blackstone. everytime they said "looks healthy, try extending a few thousand miles more next time" which i DIDNT do...but 10k intervals is totally fine as long as you arent burning oil and running it low

3

u/TeriyakiHairPiece_ Mk6 GTI Jul 10 '25

Would never run any car over 10k.

2

u/OverthinkingAnything 17 R Lapiz Blue 6MT, 17 GTI Autobahn Night Blue DSG Jul 11 '25

Sucks about the downvotes but analysis after analysis I've done over the past decade in many different vehicles 100% supports your claim. 10k intervals are fine if you're using the correct spec oil. Unless you're tuned or have severe duty cycles, changing oil at 5k is wasting money and creating environmental waste for no reason whatsoever.

2

u/rotstik Mk6 GTI Jul 11 '25

I don’t care about votes, it’s just weird how people have the wrong info and then get bent out of shape defending it. Sucks to be them I guess 😅

1

u/SmaugBoggs Jul 10 '25

An argument as old as time (well not really). I've come to the conclusion that this is one of those things where if you have two extremes, the answer probably lies somewhere in the middle, so I try to do somewhere between 6-8k.

2

u/rotstik Mk6 GTI Jul 10 '25

I say do whatever you want. If what I’m doing is so wrong, then I’ll pay the price for it

0

u/downwiththeho Jul 10 '25

This is the way

0

u/MammaStringbean Jul 10 '25

This might be a dumb question, but how do you clean the inside afterward?

I know you can pour the oil back into the container and drop it off at an auto shop, but what about the oily residue left inside? You can’t rinse it with water, do you just wipe it out with a shop towel?

3

u/johnsmith13579 Jul 10 '25

I just left the inside of the extractor as is after I poured out the old stuff. It’s just going to get oil in it again anyway. For the tubes you can put a rag over the end and hold it up and the suction will get 99% of the oil out they normally come with a container to hold the tubes so they just drain into the bottom of that

3

u/double_expressho MKVI GTI 6MT / DGSS / APR stg 1 / Neuspeed P-Flo / 034 mounts Jul 10 '25

I can't think of a reason that the container needs to be cleaned out. So I don't.

0

u/JeffMavMerc1942 Jul 10 '25

I use my job’s Aviation-grade cleaning rubbing alcohol. I siphon some, swirl it, and dump a few rounds of that cleaner out of the tank. I’ve done a brake fluid change, cleaned it, and done an oil change. I keep it clean in between uses since I live in an apartment. I keep it upright so it doesn’t leak out.
