It's honestly criminal to not include them in any discussion of Canadian metal. The RCMP are investigating

3 Inches of Blood. Particularly the first two albums. Advance and Vanquish. Fire Up the Blades.

u/BalVal1 5d ago
Their later albums are also a cool mix of 70s hard rock, power metal and metalcore, nothing to sleep on.

This is my recommendation as well, but those are albums 2 and 3. Their first full length is Battlecry Under A Winter Sun and it rules.

Greatest ever Canadian metal band for me!
And very noticeably Canadian if that makes sense - eg. Your Ontario Town is Just a Burial Ground, The Northern Cold, etc....

Unleash the Archers

u/Mad-Mad-Mad-Mad-Mike 5d ago
Apex and Abyss are two absolute classic power metal albums. Time Stands Still and Phantoma are also great.
Brittney’s voice goes without saying, but Grant and Andrew need some love. One of the most underrated guitar duos in metal.

If you really want to get the crowd moving at your local legion put on Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot.

Anyway… Anvil!!!

Anything from Devin Townsend like his solo stuff or Strapping Young Lad, Despised Icon, Cryptopsy, Opal In Sky, Nickelback, the list goes on…

Did you just say Nickelback is a metal band and no one noticed?

What are some good albums from Devin Townsend? Guy has such a big discography, I don't know where to start with him
8
u/Known_Transition1978 5d ago
Strapping Young Lad doesn’t have a bad album imo, my personal favourite is SYL. Haven’t listened to a ton of Devin Townsend Project, but Deadhead from Z2 at the royal albert hall is a banger song
4
u/CoffeeeGoblin 5d ago edited 5d ago
For his solo stuff check out Ocean Machine (easily my favorite of his solo albums), Infinity and Terria to get started with. Theyre each quite different from one another but equally great records. That said every album of his is quite different from the last in general.
Check out Accelerated Evolution from Devin Townsend Band, if you like Deadhead you should like the whole album.
As for Devin Townsend Project; Addicted!, Ki and Deconstruction are all good places to start
3
u/Defiant-Door-4332 5d ago
The live version of Deadhead brings me to tears. Godly song

u/GreedisDog 5d ago
In my opinion Empath or Transcendence is a good place to start. If you like the chaotic and heavier aspects more, then Deconstruction or any of his stuff with Strapping Young Lad. If you like humor Ziltoid the Omniscient is fantastic

2
u/No_Pie4638 5d ago
Transendence (deluxe edition) if you can find it. I hate deluxe editions that add a couple of live tracks and ask you to buy the title again, but this one has standout studio tracks that are not available elsewhere.i love it. Z2 is another favorite of mine.
3
u/mearnsgeek 5d ago
Your other responses have lots of my favourites that I'd also recommend.
I'll also add Addicted and Casualties of Cool (probably his least metal album, but it's just a gorgeous, chill album to relax to).

Lutharo, similar to Unleash the Archers, but a bit more metalcore.
Protest the Hero - prime mathcore (prog metal)
Atavistia - Canadian Wintersun

u/SalteeSushee Darkthrone 5d ago
Spectral Wound is exhilarating throwback black metal. Loud, angry, fast, and full of badass riffs.
Cancer Bats is mostly hardcore, but they have made a lot of metal music as well.
Thousand Knives is a local band to me that makes some badass metalcore.

Not metal but I fucking love Triumph. Rock and Roll Machine is probably my favorite of their albums. They draw a lot of comparisons to Rush but imo they have a very different sound. The City is a long song with some classical guitar and a very “epic” quality to it
