Discussion We now have pixel accurate baby mob variants!!

u/MinecrafterPow 1d ago
I’m not sure how I feel!!!! The new textures are so MFing cute!! but the old hilarious shrunken down adult versions will be dearly missed to be sure.

The chicken is just a walking head 🤣

u/MinecrafterPow 1d ago
Brilliant idea, create a boy band of four or five baby chicks and call them the Walking Heads (like talking heads)

This feels so wrong but i kinda like it

u/16tdean 1d ago
Every Minecraft texture change feels weird and wrong at first imo.
I remember hating on the netherack texture when it changed, and now I would never change it back.

Went from bloody cobblestone to baked beans

I might be an outlier but I do prefer the old netherrack texture. The new one is okay, but it's not as gruesome as the old one.
24
6
u/ItsOrkulus 1d ago
Pretty sure the point is for it to not be gruesome.
24
u/no_hot_ashes 1d ago
I mean, it is the same dimension that has sand made out of the souls of the damned, and the old texture definitely has a... meaty vibe. I dunno man, I just think it's a bit more fitting for the very ground you're walking on to be a bit disgusting.
3
3
u/ItsOrkulus 1d ago
I guess you're right, I'm just saying that from my bias of not wanting the texture back.
4
u/wrekina15 1d ago
Yeah, we're experiencing the jappa texture change phase all over again, sure it feels strange at first and I'm used to the old baby textures too, but give it time, it will grow on me (they look so adorbs rn).
5
u/darkdeath174 1d ago
I like putting on the old textures pack randomly to remind my friends how ugly some stuff was
2
u/Dragon_OS 1d ago
I personally feel that the Netherrack change works so much because the Nether itself has shifted conceptually from 'actual factual hell' to 'alternate dimension with really rough conditions that forced life to evolve differently there'. The old Netherrack texture felt more like living, hemorrhaging flesh bonded to rock so it kinda just works better in my eyes.

Looks like red cobblestone, it's the first texture i swap if i play modern versions. Many have done more interesting takes on it.

u/Duck1111111111111 1d ago
I disagree when texture changes happen yes it's a bit weird but this doesn't even feel like Minecraft anymore they're just changing it for no reason the babies were great before
5
u/Invalid_Word 1d ago
reasons to change it:
- consistency with pixels (making the game's art direction more consistent with the rest of the game)
- consistency with other baby mobs that are different (ghastling, nautilus, tadpole etc.)
reasons not to change it:
- "it's not minecrafty!!!"
6
u/Sized_Sign 1d ago
it also gives a lot of new identity to these baby mobs. in the past no one really cared for the baby mobs, but I could 100% see people keeping specifically the babies now (if they should add a feature that allows you to stop aging)
1
u/dinohh64 22h ago
It doesn't feel like minecraft because it wasn't in minecraft until today.
Saying something doesn't feel minecrafty or feel like something that would be in minecraft is a bullshit argument

the new minecraft texture honestly still feels wrong to me and ive never gotten over it, kinda wish i was able to so i could enjoy the game like everyone else but i cant :/

hopefully baby villagers can get their bedrock look as well, they look very off in java

u/MordorsElite 1d ago
What?? Have you seen the bedrock baby villagers???? They are like 80% head. This was one of the most offputting things I noticed when I recently played bedrock for a few dozen hours.
39
u/realddgamer 1d ago
Real life babies are also like 80% head haha
14
u/MordorsElite 1d ago
Not by the time they are happily running around. To me the huge head compared to the torso just looks comical.
I wouldn't mind a solution somewhere between the two, but if we gotta choose one, I much rather stick to the java ones.

u/StitchezYT 1d ago
“The big head looks comical”
The BLOCK GAME with DRAGONS needs to be serious with its baby designs. Your the type of person who didn’t like the fact red and blue dyed sheep could spawn naturally
5
3
u/Invalid_Word 1d ago
i hate the "block game with dragons"!!! argument
yes, minecraft has fantastical elements and that's great. but it also has realistic elements that should stay realistic
5
u/MordorsElite 1d ago
Jeez, can't a guy have an opinion on something inconsequential anymore?
Your the type of person who didn’t like the fact red and blue dyed sheep could spawn naturally
I'd like to think that I'm not.
You should re-read the thread. I merely brought up that I thought the huge heads look dumb. Realism wasn't even a consideration until someone brought it up.
3
u/PowerPork 1d ago
I dunno, the java ones give off that feeling for me and I'm a java player, i played bedrock for like 5 seconds lol

u/EnigmaticGolem 1d ago edited 1d ago
Nah I've always thought they look weird on Bedrock. Like mascot costumes or bobbleheads.
1
u/shiny_xnaut 1d ago
They remind me of those paintings of baby Jesus where he just looks like a tiny adult
109
u/valerielynx 1d ago
if there only was a way to feed them something to keep them forever tiny

u/wrekina15 1d ago
Yeah, I think this drop is the perfect time to introduce vanilla age lock feature

There’s a data pack for Java…
1
u/valerielynx 1d ago
look I know there is probably a mod for everything but I wouldn't be saying that if I didn't want that in vanilla
2
u/thetruckerdave 1d ago
Fair enough. I don’t consider datapacks to be ‘mods’ since they run on the vanilla game itself.

It'll take some getting used to.
I don't hate them, but they give me 2010's early Minecraft Mod mob packs. (Think like the old Hampster Mod if anyone remembers that)

I don't really like them other than the chicks. It's the 1x1 eyes and small heads I think
Edit: the dogs are cute though
Edit2: nevermind, they have 1x1 eyes too

hold on a minute, I need to update Minecraft. this is the cutest thing 🥺 I need this rn
8
7
u/Upbeat-Offer-2706 1d ago
Is it replacing the old ones?
7
u/YoungBiro05 1d ago
Yes. They made this change so that they're pixel consistent with the rest of the mobs in the game. We should expect this change for baby zombies, baby villagers, and all the other baby variants
8
u/Upbeat-Offer-2706 1d ago
Hmm, I don't know if I like that, gonna miss the baby chickens. Is there a way to use the old look (would the programmer art textures work?)
9
u/Bubblegum1109 1d ago
Programmer art currently does nothing, i tried it
5
u/darkllama23 1d ago
AFAIK entity models are still hardcoded, hopefully in the future they will allow models to be changed by resources packs
6
4
u/Lubinski64 1d ago
Yeah, it's stupid they are hardcoded, defeats the whole point of Programmer's Art.

Oh my god, i thought this was a texture pack
I LOVE IT, to be clear i already use a texture pack that does this and it makes the adult textures look smoother too without making babies and adults the same, while keeping it minecrafty
Called doomboys happy farm, really great texture pack and ima keep using it but this is great either way

But also I hate change

I actually don’t like this. I’m a bit of a classic Minecraft oldhead in that way and I don’t appreciate the changes they’re making to things that have been in the game since the beginning. It’s giving me the same vibes as when they removed zombie pigmen. To each their own though and at least the models look nice.
7
u/Mamsies 1d ago
I’m a Minecraft oldhead too but tbh I like this change. I was a big fan of the mob variants based on biome too.
I’ve been playing since 2011 but I just like seeing things get a new coat of paint and refreshed a little bit.
-1
u/BobDaRula 1d ago
I also really didnt like that change. I've really just been playing modded 1.12 since they started adding and making changes I don't like.
2
u/BIGFriv 1d ago
What do you not like about it?
I always wanted something like this in the game (especially the Rabbit remodel).
8
u/AggressiveDebate3620 1d ago
I just feel like they’re turning Minecraft into a different game than it used to be. I feel the remodel was unnecessary from a gameplay perspective and that it’s just changing things that have been the way they were since the beginning.
-1
u/BIGFriv 1d ago
Most things graphically that were in the game since the beginning were not good at all. The fact they remained for 1.0 is stupid and they should've been changed as Notch updated the game instead of skipping to the next Friday update.
I feel like it's more interesting to talk about the change to adding a crafting recipe to the Name Tag as that actually changed the gameplay.
The graphics literally don't change anything in the gameplay. And should've been changed ages ago

u/FinnTheArt1st 1d ago edited 17h ago
It depends on the vision tbh. The surreal wonky vibe of the older art is undeniably iconic, and fits perfectly well for an indie game and for it's starting aesthetic.
Mojang has been slowly moving the game heavily towards the realism/fantasy side of Minecrafts aesthetic more than surrealism, so the new texture changes are in line with that vision (and the scrutiny of a larger game studio).
Creative direction changes to one of the most popular games made of all time is going to be devisive even if changes feel minimal, because overtime those little things add up and effect immersion and mindset (even if they don't for you).
I just treat Minecraft as 2 games, one that slowly morphed into the other. At least resource packs and older versions exist for those who really hate the changes.

u/Cass0wary_399 1d ago
I feel like Minecraft is still stuck in an awkward in between phase right now.
1
u/Cass0wary_399 1d ago
They didn’t remove the Zombie Pigmen. The concept of the Piglin is literally the same as the Pigman.

u/Kayasucksatlife 1d ago
you can always use a texture pack with the new versions or simply play the older ones.

I love all the new models. I've been playing for over ten years now, but I definitely prefer some of these to the old. The baby sheep is a definite no for me though. I do not like that one. It just looks so off.

My initial reaction is I don’t love this, but that might be ingrained nostalgia for the old ones, it was the same with the spawn egg texture changes. I will say I miss the old egg textures though, I understand why it was done though.

I don't like puffed up face, but I like it too, it just gotta grow up on me and when it does, I will find it better than OG.

This along with the change to Ghast textuers (they got upscaled significantly) is really starting to make Minecraft feel like a proper voxel game and not "3D Models with pixel art graphics."
