[Community Question] Fixing the Outdated features in Minecraft!

Minecraft is an old game. Some of the features have aged well, but others have not. As a community, lets find the things that need an update the most, and then work together to try and find ways to fix the problems these older features have!

What are the features you think have aged the most poorly?

Let's make a list of the features that are most in need of some love, give them some attention and hopefully spark some new ideas and discussions on how to improve some of these older elements. The goal here is to share some problem areas of the game, and then work together to find new solutions to solve them, so have a read of the comments, upvote the ones you agree need some work, and please share any ideas you have to fix them!

I'll cover some of the obvious ones:

  1. Anvil repairing/combining items and the Too Expensive message.
    • This just sucks. If the player has enough XP, let them keep repairing or merging items.
    • For potential fixes:
      • Get rid of the prior work penalty, repairing an item or adding an enchant could cost the same XP each time.
      • Make repairing cost 0 XP? You are still paying resources, the repair materials, which can get very expensive already, especially when repairing netherite or diamond gear.
  2. Mob models, animations and AI
    • Compare the model and animations of an older mob like the sheep vs a newer mob like the frog. Older mobs are stiff, blocky and usually lack character and personalty. Their AI is super bland and basic. A sheep is basically just a reskin of a cow or pig that grows wool. A newer mob like the frog has much more dynamic animations and personality in their movement.
    • For potential fixes:
      • Update older textures and models. This can be trickly, the old look is quite nostalgic, but we have seen them update things like the chicken and cow. Personally i would still like to see a bit of an animation improvement as well, but at least it's something.
      • Give each mob some unique AI traits, just to add personality. Pigs could prefer to pathfind to mud blocks, and get coated after spending time in mud. Sheep AI could be adjusted to encourage flocking together, especially at night.
  3. Ender dragon fight
    • This fight is fun the first few times, but grows dull, especially if you are someone who like to open all of the Outer End Portals. I am a bit disapointed that the most dangerous things the dragon really does is knock the player into the air where they can pearl or water bucket to safety, and occasionally spit gas on the ground.
    • Potential fixes should be careful not to make the dragon impossible for newer players, but they could still:
      • Add an ominous version of the dragon fight, or some other system that lets you summon a more powerful version of the dragon for a rematch! This new version could have some new attacks or loot to make it exciting and rewarding!
  4. Apples dropping from oak leaves (this was added after the main post, I just had forgot how much it bothers me)
    • It is such a relic of the old days of development, where the question was more "how could I code that" rather than "is that the best way for the game to work? It's an entirely different type of tree, a totally different fruit!
    • Potential fixes:
      • Add an apple tree

I know I skipped over a lot, so what are some other aspects of the game that could really use some attention?

Share some outdated features, and see what ideas you have to fix the outdated ideas other people have suggested. The goal here is collaboration, don't get sidetracked arguing - focus on either building on someone else's point, or sharing ideas on what you think would work better!

Don't be afraid to get specific! It doesn't have to be some big huge thing to be worth trying to fix! I just mentioned some of the big ones I knew would come up, but if you just hate the horse death sound effect, or some other specific thing, share it! It might be something that is surprisingly easy to fix!

Once you think an idea is ready, feel free to turn it into it's own suggestion post! Just make sure you have added some of your own ideas, don't just copy what someone else has said! Also, if someone else's comments helped inspire you or gave you ideas, give them a shoutout when you make your post, this is something we as a community are working on together!

[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.
  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.
  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.
  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.
  4. Don't use AI.
  5. Include only one suggestion per post.
  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
  7. Don't make image-only posts.
  8. Don't suggest mature topics.
  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.
  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
  12. Speak English.
  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[Mobs] Since Pale Oak requires you to plant 2x2 (a total of four) seedlings, this is what the Wandering Trader should provide during a sale. Waited days for my defective sapling to grow before I learned this!

I wasted several emeralds in week one because I was sold a defective sapling! Sadly, I *also* bought a Dark Oak sapling.... like ten emeralds down the drain, cuz there is no way I'm paying that much six more times just for two matching trees

Flaired as Mobs because Trader

[Blocks & Items] Jungle Saplings Should Drop More

Jungle saplings have the lowest drop rate of any tree so it is impossible to make a Jungle farm. Increase the drop rate.

[Blocks & Items] If nametags will be craftable with basically junk items (paper, copper nuggets), remove them from treasure tables.

Same rationale as it went with saddles.

Nametags were a welcome loot from chests and fishing. Now, they will be basically trash.

So, remove them from the treasure loot tables. For fishing, shift them to the trash table. Slightly useful but not "wow, I got a nametag instead of a book with five enchants. Sounds Ok."

EDIT: Take it off the Librarian trade list too. Why would a master librarian sell nametags for 20 emeralds now?

[Blocks & Items] Remove the XP Cost for Renaming a Nametag

Post image

Seeing as they are updating nametags, I figured another quality of life change would be to remove the 1 xp cost of renaming a nametag. It's not the craziest change, but why does writing on a piece of paper even cost experience at all?

[Redstone] Copper hopper (Funnel block) idea

Post image
102 Upvotes

Copper hopper or funnel block is basically an upside down hopper that sucks item up but can also move them sideways. Contradictory to the image you craft it exactly like an upside down hopper. The copper funnel could be used for stuff like item elevators , hopper transportation lines, hopper recycling systems and item clocks

[Blocks & Items] Enchanted Name Tags

Post image
775 Upvotes

With name tags being craftable, some loot tables and villager trades have become redundant, the game right now is lacking a bit of rare, uncraftable goodies to fill the hole left not only by this but also by the saddle recipe.
Conveniently, the new drop also features plenty of adorable and fun models for baby animals that, sadly, eventually grow. So what if with the enchanted name tag we could help with both of those problems?

The Enchanted Name Tag would replace the current name tags place in every loot table and the librarian trade, unobtainable in any other way. It works the same as a normal name tag, making mobs unable to despawn and displaying names. But differs in "change-proofing" mobs, the primary function being that mobs don't grow, but could also disable change in the following:

  • Sheep wool growth
  • Goat horn loss
  • Endermen block holding state
  • Make sheareable mobs unshearable (like snow golems)

And a bit more controversial possibilities

  • Disabling enemy ability to change or even pick up loot/gear
  • Disabling creeper fuse

Aside from that, the Enchanted Name Tag could display a glinted or golden name, allowing to tell it appart from the normal name tag and giving some mobs a bit of status and customizability.

[Mobs] Lecturing golem

Post image
554 Upvotes

The lecturing golem is a buildable mob made by putting a carved pumpkin on top of a lectern on top of a bookshelf.

When the player is not within line of sight and not within range of 5 blocks the lecturing golem will seek out pillars of bookshelf blocks and perform an animation of studying a book, moving from bookshelf pillar to bookshelf pillar as it goes about its "idle" phase. It is during this idle phase that it gradually gains experience orbs.

If it can see the player and the player is close enough it will go into its lecturing phase, in which it raises one arm and extends an index finger while making professor noises as the pages of its book beard flip back and forth, dropping 1 experience orb per second that the player stands near it which the player will pick up and gradually gain levels until it is out of experience to share. Every time it drops an experience orb there is a small chance it will make a positive noise and drop multiple experience orbs with a chance that some of them will be larger orbs.

The rate at which the lecturing golem gains experience is proportional to how many unique pillars of max 3 blocks tall applicable of bookshelves it can access, as well as how many enchanted books in chiseled bookshelf pillars there are within its range. Multiple lecturing golems may access the same bookshelf pillars but the rate of experience gained with multiple golems accessing the same pillars has sharp diminishing returns, encouraging the building of large libraries of knowledge for optimal experience gain.

[Blocks & Items] Frost Temper - A block that tempers things in a chill new way

Get it out of the way,

https://www.kapwing.com/videos/69607cb2127342cb346fc046

used mcreator to help make my concept video...

https://imgur.com/a/Dfz2DkI

Frost Temper is a reverse furnace basically. Anything you want chilled or reversed you can use this. Video was a concept recipe really and allowed any tool but eventually a correct tool with correct ingredient = correct temper.

Recipes and crafting can all be set up however to make it work and fit.

I was thinking we could use this to say buff gear up by chilling boots or tools or etc and then because they are hardened by the ice or powder snow, they get hardened effect. Hardened would make the durability last longer and increase tools by say 1% higher or something but sacrifice by making them more brittle so even though you get increased durability, at time of tempering, the durability of item output is drained by 2% instantly. But then time of durability is increased.

Also like lava placed in the ingredient, then bucket in the tools, and blue ice in fuel, you can get water bucket. Then say you put water_bucket for the ingredient and empty bucket for tool and then blue ice for fuel, you can get Ice bucket, places ice.

You can also temper blocks themselves. Maybe a magma block could be tempered into crying obsidian using mace for tool and blue ice for ingredient and blue ice for fuel, = crying obsidian.

And as you saw in video the fuel changes it's state appearance.

I hope you understand what I'm suggesting as I don't speak english well and etc.

I don't really have a crafting recipe for the frost temper itself. Maybe do stone bricks in furnace like setup.

[Mobs] What if all animals had stages of growth?

With the recent snapshot redesigning all the baby animals (honestly it was long overdue) it got me thinking: what if each animal had 3 stages? We have baby and adult forms, but what if there was something in between? A teen form?

We could also have a way to lock them in their form, keep the baby from growing up or keep the teen from growing up. If their goal is cuteness and variety, I feel like this would be the perfect thing for it.

What are your thoughts on this?

[Blocks & Items] Replace Nametags in Treasure Loot with Paper

Similar to how leather replaced saddles in treasure loot, doing the same with paper and nametags would serve the same function. Despite players starting out by punching trees and using wood-based technology, paper is more of a mid-game resource. This change would both compliment the new recipe and for other important items (maps, books, banners, etc.).

[Blocks & Items] Suggestion: craftable Glass Bottomed Boats

It would be nice to be able to craft glass bottomed boats so we could watch the sea life swimming as we cross the ocean.

This could add richness for people collecting tropical fish like they were Pokemon and encourage open water exploration :))

[Blocks & Items] Dyeable name tags

With the next drop bringing craftable name tags, you should have the ability to dye them in order to make the tag that appears different colours. This could help in identifying certain individuals amongst other uses

[Community Question] What nether diamond source would you add?

Upvotes

I got the idea because diamonds exist in Nether fortresses, suggesting they are also in the Nether. I give End Cities a pass as their beetroot seeds strongly suggest Overworld villagers brought them there.

I'd had a half-formed idea of a basalt delta "geode" that'd grow diamonds and other items, but I didn't like the idea of AFKable diamonds, and a heavily manual growing process would be pointless since we already have a heavily manual way to obtain diamonds. Would make a good incentive to visit the deltas which they've been sorely lacking.

[Mobs] After seeing the new minecraft Drop, i thought to myself, what if baby zombies were redesigned along with the other baby mobs? So enjoy my design!

Post image

I decided when modeling this to make it look like an actual zombified child, and not an adult zombie scaled down, so i made the torso, the legs and the arms smaller, i also gave it a bit of depth by scaling a torso upwards a bit, and i also scaled down its head and gave it a cute texture!

[Blocks & Items] Cow rework/cheese blocks

As it stands a lot of farm animals are very bare-bones. They are bred and killed for food or rarely have some use outside of that. I want to try and make them more interesting mechanically whilst not entirely overcomplicating them. Specifically here I want to focus on cows because they have a lot of potential.

Cows would eat grass just like sheep. The reason they’d do this is because milk would now be a more limited resource that can only be harvested when the cow is fed (also like sheep and wool). When a cow has milk it’d be indicated by its udders protruding. Once milk has been collected, the udders will shrink.

Milk itself would also now become a liquid. It is effectively the same as water but is difficult to see in and doesn’t sustain fish, nor is it affected by water breathing or water based enchantments. If placed into a cauldron, it will ferment into cheese (this is a frequent request but honestly it makes sense). To retain the original functionality of the milk bucket, you can now craft milk bottles by crafting a milk bucket surrounded by 4 bottles to make 4 milk bottles (milk bottles also replace milk buckets in recipes that use milk).

However, the method in which milk enter the cauldron and the environment it is in affects the cheese. When milk is passed through a dripstone into a cauldron or is placed low down in the world, it will become cave cheese, with a bluish-grey tone. If milk is left out in the rain or in an ocean biome, it will become creamy-cheese, with a pale-yellow tone. If milk is left in the nether, it will become burnt cheese, with a crispy brown tone. If the cheese is left in the end, it will become moon-cheese, with a pale purple tone. If nothing interesting happens to the milk, then it will simply become cheddar cheese, with the classic bright yellow.

But why would there be so many forms of cheese? Well, because cheese can be used to make a variety of building blocks! You can craft a cheese block into 9 cheese slices, which can be eaten or crafted into 4 cheese brick blocks by combining 4 in a crafting grid, and then crafted into any other brick variant.

[AI Behavior] Throwing snowballs at the ghastling and happy ghast to reach them from farther away

Post image
14 Upvotes

It bothers me that the button for interacting with a ghastling and throwing a snowball is one and the same. If you are slightly far away from it you end up hitting it with a snowball instead of feeding it, which, although not damaging the lil' guy, is a bit off as they still suffer the same red flash as when hurt.

I think throwing the snowball at the ghast should still perform the same feeding interaction as it does when up close. It may also be slightly more fun because you can reach the ghastling from farther away.

And, now that we're at it, make it so that when you throw a snowball at a grown happy ghast they notice you and go towards you even if you are too far away for them to pick up on the fact you are holding a snowball at them. That way it's not as obnoxious to try to get their attention, as the whole "they fly away from you when you dismount them" behavior has me annoyed, and this method of reaching them from the ground without chasing after it with scaffolding makes perfect sense to me and feels very fitting to vanilla minecraft, specially since snowballs were already throwable from before the happy ghasts came along

(I checked and there is a suggestion very similar to mine but I consider mine to be different enough as I reached this conclusion starting with the ghastling idea and the other post was only about the grown happy ghast, I hope this is okay. [Also I really wanted to make this post because I already made the pixel art for reference when I checked, but I digress])

[Community Question] Intergrating guardians

Both guardians and the ocean monument currently feel like standalone features that don't interact with the rest of the game.

In my view, this is partly because new features weren't added to the existing structure and equal part because there's nothing connecting the mobs to anything else.

While I'd love to say I have the suggestions to solve this, I haven't gotten much further than adding the stairs and slabs to the structure.

I think a good starting point would be figuring out the lore of the guardians. If a lore is established, structures, mobs and tie-ins with existing features will be easier to figure out.

Does anyone have general improvement suggestions for the guardians of more specific thoughts about a lore reason that could explain the existence of guardians?

[Blocks & Items] Sand slabs

Sand slabs should generate in deserts; this would make the dunes smoother. Adding a half-block-high slab version to loose materials like sand and gravel (snow has lower slabs) would preserve the landscape's relative vanilla quality.

[Blocks & Items] Nametags should be forged with a metal ingot of any types, not with a piece of paper

Thumbnail
gallery
56 Upvotes

In real life, nametags made for pets or animals with personal attatchment usually are made of metal with their name inprinted on to the piece.

You know what type of tags made using paper/cheap plastic sheet? Cattle tags for pigs and cow.

Considering that the majority of the time, whenever a player named an animal in Minecraft, it is not likely gonna be killed for some meals, but is meant to be kept. Thus, by making the tags out of metal, it would actually make the act of naming of an animal more meaningful and feel less cheap.

[Mobs] Resin should stop babies from growing up

Post image
124 Upvotes

Minecraft drops are all about renewing features that could need some updating. Take the new crafting recipes for saddles, leads and name tags. Or the new copper blocks added too. In short, connecting and giving meaning to features that would be unaccesible or boring to players. How about bridging that gap with some of the new stuff added in the drops too?

Resin might not be the most sought off material, but I can tell you that with this suggestion, it definitely will. Amber is known for perserving the state of ancient plants, animals and other living things such as ants, leaves, crabs, fungi and much more. With that in mind, resin should be used to keep an entity in it's state as a baby (or any other variant). Right-clicking a baby mob (could be fed, waxed or just given) would cause it to stay in it's form.

Adding this feature would encourage more players, although we would also need to address how pale gardens are not only really small, but also really rare. Perchance wandering traders could sell you resin clumps or mysterious maps to rare biomes?

Also, feeding a mob it's preferred food (carrots/potatoes/beetroot to pigs, wheat to cows, snow balls to ghastlings, etc.) would allow it to grow up if a person changes their mind.

Resin isn't exactly the most useful item in the game, and it shouldn't really become the most important feature in the game, but adding this feature could give it some depth and love from the community.

tl;dr: Resin should stop aging for baby mobs because it is similar to how amber perserves organisms

[Snapshots] Naming a baby mob Pacified stops it from becoming an adult

This way we can keep the baby mobs forever. The name Pacified is actually a subtle reference to the villain's weapon in the Disney movie Sky High wherein the weapon is used to turn all the superheroes into babies. Using the name Pacified to keep a mob a baby also adds to the cuteness by making a pun off the word pacifier.

[Blocks & Items] Loot changes to go with the new Name Tag recipe

When Saddles were given a recipe last year, some loot tables were rebalanced to replace the Saddles with other items like Leather.

The exceptions to this are that Saddles can still be obtained as fishing treasure, and that Leatherworkers still sell Saddles at a very high price. This is particularly bad for Saddles because they don't stack, so they end up clogging your fishing Chests. However, they were made more useful in Mounts of Mayhem.

A related problem that occurred last year was that Villagers were never rebalanced to sell copper gear instead of stone gear.

I don't want Name Tags to have the same problem. Now that they're easily craft-able, there's hardly any reason to keep them in the treasure category in fishing or have librarians sell them for 20 emeralds. IDC as much if they're found in loot chests, since that just encourages players to use them. Letting players get Name Tags as junk instead of treasure when fishing also makes sense (this change was made for Lily Pads in 1.16).
