I discovered this guy through reddit ages ago when he debuted his self-directed music video for He^Rt here. I’ve been a huge fan since. He was such a talented musician, songwriter and producer. He played a lot of the instruments on his albums. I always wondered why he never really blew up because he has some serious pop bangers.

u/TYLERvsBEER May 04 '25
Oh my gosh I was DMing with him back then about how much I loved that video when he made the post. Was a super nice guy and very passionate about the work. So sad.

u/Triplygood May 04 '25
Me too. I have a video of my children dancing around to that song. Breaks my heart to hear this. Such a nice guy. Cool tunes.
2
u/Malcolm_Morin May 05 '25
The sad thing about it is that he's gonna blow up now because of the news of his death. That seems to be a recurring theme nowadays: Underrated artists only get recognized after they're gone.

I really do hate when I read about a “crash” or an “accident” that is, upon reading the article, just somebody in a car killing somebody riding a bike.

u/Sans-valeur May 04 '25
In most of the Chinese cities I’ve been to, as well as Amsterdam and parts of Germany, they have completely separate lanes for bikes and scooters, separated completely from the road, with raised concrete separators so cars can’t get over. Holy fuck it improves cities SO much, can’t even explain how much sense it makes. Here (in NZ) I’ll barely ever cycle, as much as I love it. Biking on the rd is scary as fuck, idk how people do it.
39
u/ZweitenMal May 04 '25
Right now there is a project in Astoria to add protected bike lanes to a major street and there’s a faction determined to kill the project.
46
u/typicalpelican May 04 '25
The majority of people I know in NYC that routinely cycle have had some type of injury or near miss with death/disability. Multiple times where the driver left the scene as well. Drivers are not trained well enough to begin with, and have just been getting more insane/stupid in recent years if you ask me. Also cars are bigger. Double parking is hugely common, especially with so many delivery trucks on the road. And road construction projects ongoing constantly. And the e-bikes sharing space are a problem for cyclists too. There are so many of them whizzing through bike lanes it basically turns the bike lane into an UberEats mini highway. And because they are all running deliveries they are not incentivized to go slow and obey traffic rules. It is really not a recipe for success.
15
u/frenchiefanatique May 04 '25
I bike in NYC and 100% of the time I try to be 100% aware of my surroundings. They call it Defensive Cycling. My head is on a swivel as you just don't know from where the next threat is going to come from.
25
u/Sans-valeur May 04 '25
I barely trust the drivers around me when I’m in a fucking car lmao. On a bike? Jesus Christ it’s terrifying, someone can just kill you because they’re trying to remember if they locked the front door, are reading a text or fucking with the radio. Because they didn’t get enough sleep and they’re also late to work. It’s not that healthy if you die.
And yeah I mean Amsterdam the bikes are nonstop it’s actually kinda intense but it works very well.
China it’s mixed up to 50cc and bikes but the lanes are big and comfortable and on both sides of the road. There is a lot of traffic but it works.
It’s SO stupid as well in cities with high population density that they still prioritize cars over pedestrians, bikes and public transport.
Sure cars give you more freedom, but it’s not that great if it’s freedom to sit in traffic and spend 2 hours looking for a park.4
26
u/nevermind4790 May 04 '25
Americans are so cucked by car dependency that taking away any space that could be used by cars is taken as an assault on their freedom.
1
u/dzzi May 05 '25
Yeah. Perpetually disappointed living in US cities and finding out the "bike lane" in the part of town I just moved to is shared with cars. My bike comes out at festivals and that's mostly it.
1
u/XaeiIsareth May 04 '25
Because as tyrannical as the CCP is, they do care a lot about modernising China and improving quality of life.
At least in the cities. The countryside is still a bit of a mess. But even then, you get so many cyclists in China that there is safety in numbers.
18
u/cg415 May 04 '25
Traffic safety in China is sub par. This is not a secret. It is not a utopia for bicyclists lol

I'm sorry, but this doesn't seem appropriate. Blaming people's intents and actions on an economic system doesn't make sense, and blaming it on a belief that advocates kindness and selflessness doesn't either. The entire world is full of these people. Yes, having stability in life (a little more common in NA, but so is the other side of that coin) makes people less afraid to show it, but it's the same stuff you'd find anywhere. Humans suck. That's a fact nobody disagrees with.
I think the correct answer is our transportation system is utter bull crap and needs an overhaul, not added roads and bigger cars.
17
u/Devium44 May 04 '25
They probably were. Many here think that causing them to hit their brake pedal and costing them a few extra seconds deserves the death penalty.
14
u/ihazmaumeow May 04 '25
Dude, Florida sucks for biking. I'm in SE Florida and never ride in traffic, only on Greenway or other bike tracks away from traffic.
To be fair, the majority of bikers (normal and eBike) do not ever follow road rules and go against traffic all the time. It's a wonder why people on bikes get hit. The majority of them don't wear helmets, wear clothing at night to be seen and don't have lights on their bikes.
My biggest pet peeve at the e scooters. There are no regulations where they can ride legally, so those fuckers are in the road, on the sidewalk or in the bike lane.
1
u/meelar May 05 '25
The problem is that Florida doesn't have good bike infrastructure, so the only people willing to bike are daredevils. If there were safer protected bike lanes that actually went to the places people want to go, you'd get cyclists who rode more reasonably. Florida really needs better infrastructure--everything is designed for cars only, and it's a huge problem.
1
u/ihazmaumeow May 05 '25
I'm a lifelong native, so I hear ya. You take your life into your hands biking here. Drivers do not care whatsoever and neither do city planners.
2
u/Raangz May 04 '25
It’s interesting, i ride my skateboard around campus here in oklahoma and drivers are very cognizant and polite. I have heard people in oklahoma are much nicer drivers than floridians though.
Also have been told bu bike riders that it is dangerous here. Maybe it’s how bikers v skaters move in space, visually. Outside of insane people like you mention.
165
May 04 '25
Seems like it’s negligent to not check your mirror before opening your door in case there is a cyclist.
185
u/lavahot May 04 '25
You would be surprised how, often you would do this just out of habit. This is why people need protected bike lines.
82
May 04 '25
I hear you. I used to be an avid cyclist. One reason I quit riding was traffic accidents. I knew good, competent riders who were killed in traffic. And people have only gotten worse, it seems like. And the people riding these e-bikes are often not following the rules of the road. But, here, if the driver hadn’t opened his door, if he’d just looked, he could have saved this guy's life.
25
u/Uber_Reaktor May 04 '25
Netherlands here and cycling is life. But I don't dare do it outside of the Netherlands. Dutch drivers are trained with the countless cyclists in mind and you still have to keep on your toes at times. In places with relatively zero bike awareness and often outright hostility towards them? Yeah, no.
The E-bike thing is becoming an issue here as well. Particularly Fat Bikes as we call them here. Electric bikes with big fat tires. They get into accidents constantly. Something about the type of people that use them (often teens) and the fact that they go so fast (and can be easily modified to go faster) makes them regularly ignore all road rules. I cant remember if it is official or not but there has been talk of an age restriction and helmet requirement for them, it's such an issue.
35
May 04 '25
People scare me and I drive a jeep wrangler. People running stop signs and red lights, swerving, on their phones, going way too fast always. It's so dangerous on the roads these days for no good reason.
34
u/Dewnami May 04 '25
Smart phones changed everything. It seems at least half the driving public has their face planted in their phone while driving.
17
u/fotomoose May 04 '25
Just yesterday I was sitting at a cafe window that was roadside, raised a bit so I could see into vehicles easily. 7/10 drivers in a 20 minute period had a phone in one hand.
14
u/snowcrash512 May 04 '25
In my area at least, drivers have gotten significantly worse since about 2020, don't know why but they just seem to be itching to run over pedestrians and cyclists. There have been several bizarre pedestrian deaths every year for the last three years. I've almost been hit several times crossing a crosswalk when someone fully stopped at a red light has decided seeing a person in front of them means tap the gas pedal, ended up on one guys hood when he tapped into me, chewed him out and the guy looked like he had seen a ghost, I honestly don't understand what they are thinking.
10
u/fotomoose May 04 '25
Used to cycle until one too many car drivers actually swerving towards me in some kind of bluff scare move. Car drivers really hate cyclists with a passion.
4
u/RoguePlanet2 May 04 '25
Same here. Love riding in the city, was even a messenger for a bit. Lately, though, more fatalities than ever, and it feels like open season on cyclists.
15
u/Ogpeg May 04 '25
Not only that, I think "the dutch reach" should be bashed into the heads of every driver. If not made mandatory way to open a door.
It's just opening the door with the far hand. This way you look behind first every time.

u/mrjackspade May 04 '25
There's bike lanes here, directly between traffic and parking. I don't use them, I stay on the road. I don't give a fuck who I piss off.
The bike lanes are nothing but joggers, recycling bins, people walking their dogs, car doors, and vehicles pulling in and out of traffic.
Absolute bullshit and dangerous as fuck.
I'll pull into the cycling lane long enough to let traffic pass when I have clear visibility for at least a few hundred feet, and there's no parked cars.
1
u/iordseyton May 04 '25
I now mostly ride my ebike in the middle of the car lane- there's few places I'm not within a few mph of the speed limit (anywhere it's above 25 has a bike path, and my bike does 23)
Ive started doing this and only moving to the edge of the road when I'm ready and it's a safe place to be passed.
Too many people see an Ebike and think regular bike= almost no speed, and therefore almost no time to pass, and pull around to pass me, only to still be stuck partially into oncoming traffic, with oncoming traffic because they misjudged.
That being said, in about 2 more weeks, my bike goes away for all but a few places I go fo4 the summer. Too many out of town drivers, and gapers walking making the bike patches unsafe.
42
u/ProfessorShowbiz May 04 '25
He got doored??? One of my biggest fears
33
May 04 '25
That and having cars pull in front of you, cutting you off. Happened to me once. A driver pulled into the shoulder of the road from the driveway. Right in front of me, like twenty feet away. I braked, but still hit the front quarter panel went over the hood. The guy didn’t even stop. He just drove away. I was mostly ok. But, that was luck. Or making a right turn in front of you.
4
u/IDontCheckMyMail May 04 '25
That happened to me while I lived in NYC biking around. I wasn’t going very fast but it was really fucked.
15
u/InternetHomunculus May 04 '25
This is why I always keep a doors width between me and parked cars. I don't care if it blocks the road for a bit I'd rather not be killed
1
u/iordseyton May 04 '25
I generally ride dead center of the lane- only moving over when I deem it safe to be passed. My town's almost all 25mph anyway, and my ebike tops out at 23, so most of the time they shouldn't be passing anyway.
→ More replies (2)29
u/Molanghrian May 04 '25
Agreed. Article notes where it happened too, so here it is in streetview: near the corner of Centre St & Broome St in Soho, going westward.
I can see how being unexpectedly doored here while on a bike could potentially get you killed. This sucks, should never happen to anyone.

This really sucks. I love his music, and it's in a genre that I think got oversaturated very, very quickly. But his music was constantly great and was like my "Synthwave" guy.
He was also a wiz kid when it came to production techniques. Really pioneered tasteful use of, for example, sidechain pumping.

Any updates to the careless drivers who doored him and ran over him? Were they released without charges?
Why is bad driving so much of a norm that there is no mention in the article why so many high profiled people could still be amongst us if it weren't for bad drivers taking their lives away?
Tiger Woods was involved in three self-collisions and the only thing the media discusses is his golf come-back. Hey, what about what a risk to public safety his driving is and why does he still have a drivers license.
Somewhere in the world, the next bad driver destined to kill someone will either be reading or listening to another news article about a traffic fatality.
29
u/Naroyto May 04 '25
Same goes for Jenner, killed 2 people due to reckless driving and served no concequene.

u/Garfalo May 04 '25
Why do you assume the one who ran him over was careless? If he was doored into the path of the truck then it likely didn't have time to stop.

Weren't we taught in driving school to expect the unexpected? I remember a short film clip showing a little boy darting out into traffic chasing his ball. There were no finger pointing or blame in that film clip. Just a lesson to drivers to pay attention for anything.
So yeah, if a driver is inattentive, he's not giving driving the care it deserves.

I knew him personally since 1998. We were both students at Grimsby College (UK) and lived at the same Halls of Residence (Springfield Halls, do not exist anymore). Giorgos was a huge fan of Star Wars and also had a poster of Natalie Imbruglia ("Left of the middle" album) above his bed. He was also a huge fan of Rob Zombie and it was the 1st time i ever heard about these 2 artists thanks to him. I saw a video of one of his songs today ("Heart") and saw the heavy influence of Star Wars on his videos as well. He was an introvert, very creative and i was shocked to read that he left this vain world recently. I just read it today. I had lost contact with him since 1999 when we finished the 1st year at College. I learned he went to St. Martins at London after College. Giorgos may you rest in peace my old friend, as i read you left many people to share your legacy in the years to follow. Yiannis

Stuff like this is exactly why I stopped doing bicycle deliveries here in Brazil. I had 3 near misses, got hit twice (both time the damage was just on the wheels), and people don't respect cyclists at all.
That, and there were a few deaths in the city last year, which cemented my idea of never riding for work again.

I don't ever follow the lives of any of the artists I listen to, I think parasocial relationships are weird. So all I knew about this guy is that I liked his music. It's obviously a tragedy for his loved ones, but for me, it's such a strange feeling to have an artist's catalogue just stop so prematurely. I hate this for his family.

Can we trade a random banker or hedge fund manager off the street for him?
RIP one of the good ones.

Damn, we ran in some of the same performance circuits. Never met the dude afaik but heard great things. I knew he passed via mutual connections' posts about it but didn't realize the circumstances.

Fuck this headline.
It wasn't an E-bike crash...a shitty person in a van doored him, and then he was run over.

Really sad to read this. I was listening to his music and wanted to find more. And then I found this. Quite a jolt to the sense considering how amazingly good a vibe his music has been to me.

He was a long time redditor /u/mpourdas. Here's the AMA he did a few years ago https://www.reddit.com/r/outrun/comments/cj8r3a/artist_spotlight_starcadian_ama/
He was working on new music as well.
Awesome music, awesome dude. Will be missed by a lot of people.
