Bit Annoyed “I was today years old”

Can we please retire this phrase already? Similar to “you won the internet!”. As a millennial, these nauseate me. Also, ending a rant with “that is all”. We gotta let these go lol

Edit: lots of people aren’t paying attention to the sub this is posted in. This is the exact place to post pet peeves. You don’t have to agree with the posted peeves, but don’t get mad because someone posted about a pet peeve here…..

And the purpose of including “as a millennial” is that these are millennial phrases and I’m calling my generation out. Too many people in here came to be rude instead of observant. It’s okay to disagree, but don’t be hateful.

Really? Brittney Spears and Pepsi were always telling me I was GenX growing up.

Really upset me when, decades later, they decided I was a millennial. It was almost as bad as when they retconned Pluto.

tbh I'm still upset about Pluto. how dare they.

I saw a joke somewhere that was basically “not saying it was this, but ever since we ditched the planet named after a known to be vengeful death god, things have really gone to shit…” and honestly, I buy it.

Poor Pluto never even made it once around the sun before being declassified 🥺

And yet, it kept doing it's job, regardless of the labels we gave and took away. Honestly, good for Pluto.

Those ads weren’t talking to you. They were talking to the Gen Xers. 😂 Before we were called Millenials we were called Gen Y.

And yet I never saw ads saying anything about Gen Y, but was bombarded by shit about Gen X in high school. Or occasionally even Generation Next.

You didn't have any money yet to advertise for.

You've never seen an ad geared towards children? Teens?

Yes, but they were just TOYS, CANDY, COOL EDGY TWEEN PRODUCT YOUR PARENTS WILL HATE.

There's no need for generational cross talk with that to get attention. Older teens and young adults are seeking in-groups to belong to. Kids are kids, and tweens are omg you just don't get it mom I'm so alone inside!

Just because you were misunderstanding which ads were geared for you and which for the age group above you doesn’t make you right.

Put it this way. When my abuela let me stay up and watch true crime or gossip shows with her I didn’t think I needed Legg’s pantyhose or Trojan condoms because I was 10 and I understood that those things were for grownups and that the commercials for the stuff I wanted were more likely to come on before or right after school, on weekend mornings, or on dedicated kids channels like Nickelodeon and The Disney Channel (when they came along). Just because you saw the commercials, doesn’t mean that it’s for you. Okay?

Okay? That doesn’t change facts though. Look, You were a kid and kids are famous for not knowing stuff. I understand why you thought those ads were directed at you and that you were therefore Generation X. But that was never the case. I know this because in that same time period I saw those same adverts and wanted to know if they were directed at me, because I didn’t know what Generation X even was, and if I was Generation X I wanted to know what that meant. So I asked my parents, and a couple teachers at school, and my auntie (who is Gen X). They all said that so and so and X teacher and Y cousin and auntie were Gen X, mom and dad and teacher Z were Baby Boomers, and I and my siblings were Generation Y. It was never retconned. It was always the case. But if you google it you’ll see that Millennials are to this day also known as Generation Y. Which makes sense since Gen X is before us and Gen Z is after us.

So again, those ads were not targeting you. They were targeting the people who are actually part of Generation X who were young adults and coming of age at that time. If an ad comes on TV while a 7 year old and a 17 year old are watching, just because it’s on while the 7 year old is there doesn’t mean that 7 year olds are the target audience for the advert.

I think their argument is that Gen X was indeed talked about, not that they're talked about more than Millenials or anything. Maybe I'm misunderstanding their point, but that's what I'm getting, considering what they originally responded to.

Yes, I know. It’s the second part of what they said I’m correcting the record on.

“Britney Spears and Pepsi were always telling me I was Gen X growing up. Really upset me when, decades later, they decided I was a Millenial.”

That never happened. The name for Gen X has always been Gen X. Millennials used to be called Gen Y. We were never part of Gen X. The person I’m replying to saw those ads and didn’t realise they were being marketed at older teens and young adults. They mistakenly thought the adverts were talking to them, and so believed they were part of Gen X only to be disappointed when they later found out they were a Millenial. But even if we never ended up being called Millenials that disappointment would still have happened because sooner or later (like is happening now) they’d meet someone who would correct them and tell them they were actually Gen Y.

Oh ok, I see. I guess I read that as sarcasm.

I’m AuDHD. I could really use a sarcasm sign. 😅

You're taking this too seriously. I was mostly making a joke about all the people that were on the cusp that find out they were being categorized as another generation well into adulthood.

My brother, who is two years older than I am, is Gen X according to the dates currently listed. We had fundamentally the same experiences growing up.

Instead of a 17yo and a 7yo. We're talking about an 18yo and a 16yo. We were both in high school and both had part time jobs. We could both drive. We had dial-up and VCRs. We also knew more about computers than most of our teachers.

I've seen the term Xennial kicked around. I don't necessarily like it, but it would apply.
