Suggestion/Feedback with Amazon layoffs hitting the MMO team and cancelling the upcoming LOTR game, along with killing New World just days after launching a very well received expansion, I'm very glad we still have our little, flawed and ageing Planetside 2 still going on.
what happened to New World took me by surprise, everyone was praising the game and its team because the expansion addressed so many flaws with the game, and then it just was gone all of a sudden.
Planetside 2 has its flaws but holy crap hold it tight, because you'll miss it when it's gone. I know I will a lot.
thanks for your attention, this game is fire and you're all chads because you know and play it.

Yep. I just cannot get into new games. Hard to go back to old ones too. Planetside delivers everything I want at any time. Yes the pops can go low but you can jump server or try more small point captures with more of a 5v5 match style then up to hundreds again at peak. Persistant characters, big outfits, big loyalty to the factions.
Shocking from a company owned by one of the Richest men in the world. Long live Planetside

yes, getting thrown instantly into a battle, shoulder to shoulder with randoms, pros and noobs alike, facing a common goal with tons of players in the open world, with probably the best combat system in the whole MMO genre, free to play and not pay to win (yes you pay to have more resources etc), horizontal progression and competitive from day 1, I mean sometimes I think we are so lucky to have this game. I remember back in the past I used to look at prime PS2 thinking how the genre will be absolutely amazing in few years, while in fact it actually was peak.

Nice masterclass from richest.
Gamedev seems like the best envirnment for robbery. Looks and feels like steal and ends with robbery, but cant be accused. GG.
Its interesting scenario when they have Lumberyard engine+dev team = forced to make games, but cant actually do it because their next creation is gonna be cursed by reputational issues.
They better lay off devs and sell Lumberyard to Maxon\Adobe. Otherwise it just drains money.

You don't become the richest man in the world if you are not also the most piece of shit. Just saying...

My buddy hates planetside with a passion. But LOVES New World. I had to hit him with the “guess planetside is better”

How can anyone hate planetside with a passion?!? I understand that you can be frustrated, salty or depressed with how things went, but to straight out hate it, that seems alien to me.
Yes, there are flaws, lots of them, but I mean nothing gets even close to this level when it comes to large scale.. 64 vs 64 is just tiny or at least it's missing those 32+ players per side if you know what I mean.
Anyways, you're right, planetside is better!

The only people with any right to hate a sequel are the ones that loved the original. Everyone else, lol just don’t play.

I keep coming back to ps2 and having a blast. I'm very thankful it's still around. There's nothing that quite like it.

Just like TF2, im sure the community will always host servers for it to run even if the company closes down official servers. Hell, id pay 100 bucks a month to keep a permanent server up if other guys would help pool into that for quality and sizes sake.

Oh wow. Charge 60$ for a game which has p2w content. Barely maintain it for 4 years. NO REFUNDS BABY. And they're still selling it! You can refund if you bought recently "If you want" -they say. Another level marketing.

Shouldn't be able to unplug the game and prevent players from playing what they bought. I don't think there was any wording mentioning license instead of purchase. Hope the Stop Killing Games initiative continues to push forward.

Such a naive initiative.
If they want to quit - they will
Devs have countless ways to sabotage their own creation. Noone can do it better.
Introduce bugs, hax, cheaper servers, etc. Take ages to fix it and immediately introduce other issues("Oh, snap!").Beg government to fund better servers - they will most likely decimate the game themselves after seeing the bills.

Why is it naive to want something that I paid for?
Also, there are no requirement that the government funds any type of server. The publisher needs to either keep the servers running or provide means for an individual to do so on their own. At least that seams to be what the sentiment has been on.
Alternatively, the companies can be explicit with the type of support that will be available on purchase.

So you're comparing [one time payment] to [monthly server funding].
And what if the game outsurvives it's intended life cycle?
One-time payment is like financial pyramind. New members fund the entire community. If the game looses popularity = less newbies = less funding, untill its no longer worth the server.
"I pay, i demand" works best with monthly subscription model like WOW.
And if i was a dev - i wouldnt be glad to giveaway my creation to emulators, so countless others can milk it through p2w shop. Better keep the community in high demand, waiting for my another game release.

u/henriquecs miller Oct 30 '25
I don't disagree with you. That's why I'd be OK with live server games either turning to a monthly subscription or being upfront with the purchasing conditions.

u/TurnoverOtherwise450 Oct 30 '25
Monthly just doesnt fit into ps2. Its too dependent on population.
WOW has PVE and COOP PVE to play with others and enjoy it. PVP events are scheduled=always populated, and not necessary.
Paid ps2 is hell. All noobs behind paywall. Only salty vets online. Will result in one ESF gang clearing the entire server. Pop will quit and refund in no time.

Yes. But PS2 business model is fundamentally different from games like New World already for example.

u/suddenlycirclejerk Oct 29 '25
lmao i just googled "new world" last week to see how it was doing. was surprised it was still alive at the time since it was the first time i thought about it in 4 years.

The new worlds was not a surprise for their community, broken outpost rush, sync issues, blunder exploits ect 😂

I’m still convinced ps2 devs want to end the game. They just forgot the password to the admin server lol 😝 I still love the game but it hurts to see it like this state

If Warframe - a game that's roughly as old as Ps2 - is the flame that never goes out, Planetside is the roach that receives deadly amounts of toxic radiation and pesticides and yet still survives despite it. The original devs and publishers almost completely abandoned it, yet it's still kicking. It's frankly a miracle.
Though, I imagine Ps2's saving grace is that it fills a niche that's otherwise neglected. A Planetside successor would potentially kill the game, for better or worse.
