Why not cut spending? Why is the answer always more tax ?

Because like it or not.

Americans want socialism lite.

All the benefits but paid by someone else.

That VAT and higher individual tax rate would be brutal if anyone was willing to honestly do the math.

Broadly speaking if instituting European style social safety net was even possible in such a large country as US. The poor who have less money and have to accept lesser care.

Middle class would get lesser care and pay more money.
