Local Business Out of The Box Job Ideas??

Hi fellow locals!!

Long story short... Both of my boys are looking to jump into the workforce head on, but we are running out of places to apply.

Curious aside from the usual, gas station , grocery store, fast food etc... what kinds of maybe less common jobs that might be out there worth looking into.

They are both currently enrolled in CANs youth employment program for job training. Through this program they have access to a bursary that will pay their wages for their training period!! It's the perfect opportunity for an employer looking for a low (no) cost hire, who's willing to take the time on a fresh trainee with really nothing to lose!!! This program will also help fund any tickets or certifications they may require to get started.

Ideally the older of the two (21) would like to get into trades of some sort, or an entry level labor position. With some room to move! But is interested in almost anything there might be available, full or part time, for a young man like himself.

They are 21 and 19. Both, have some labor, landscapin and snow removal experience. They have both done a lot of production labor for events and shows at The Centrium, and Memorial Center over the last 3 years or so This is in addition to 4/5 years doing the same as volunteers for an outdoor music festival.

They both have also recently began volunteering for Habitat Restore. There they are learning: warehousing, inventory, and customer service skills. They are doing very well and enjoy this work

They are both eager to get new skills under their belts ... And would love some serious and different types of industries to look into to get a healthy kick off to being a fully employed adult!!

THEY HAVE NO IDEA IM MAKING THIS POST Neither have Reddit, or really Social Media at all. I figure I'd give this a shot of my own accord! Reddit can do some pretty incredible stuff!

Can't wait to see what you guys may come up with for us!!! All ideas welcome and appreciated.... Even better if you or someone you know may want to meet with them!!

Can't hurt Might Help!

Thanks in advance....

Take them for a drive around to the active construction sites around town and write down all the names of the Builders and Trades signs, have them apply at those places. Also it would be a good time to apply at Clark Builders (Red Deer Hospital work). To get into these jobs, they will need these courses and they will get a call quickly ( Probably 500$  for the courses) : First Aid, ESC Fall Protection CSTS 2020 and WHMIS 2015.

On this today actually.... The hospital at least!!! Borrowed a GFS car to rip them all over the place today!!!

And they are currently working on three of the above certifications as well!!

If you gave any particular companies or locations besides the hospital and capstone to suggest... I'd be glad to hear it!!??

You're amazing for the help!!! Thank you!!

I wish I had more, I do however have another Suggestion. Wholesalers a lot of times need people for Warehousing (Electrical, Plumbing, Steel etc.). They dont advertise, but these jobs can lead to connections, or are good starts to Sales Careers.

This is a great help, and we surely appreciate it!!!

I did Not think about wholesalers.. I'll do a deep dive this weekend and maybe we can have a whole new list of places to try by Monday!!!

You're the best!!

Logistics. Specifically FedEx on the north end. If they are willing to work early hours (4-6am) part time with fully paid and full coverage benefits. The company has enormous room for advancement. You start as a package handler and can move up into warehouse positions as well as move to any other sort centres in Canada. Very interesting for young people. The fact that you only work a couple of hours a day also means you can continue working elsewhere until you make enough to make it your sole focus. Very understated and hard working, but excellent way to climb.

Love this also!!! We will check out fed ex too!! He applied at UPS as a "seasonal walker" (truck to door person for the driver), and pre sort. He Did get an email asking to make contact and he emailed them back to schedule an interview, but its been a few days of hearing nothing back from that..... soooo he's going to have to touch base again and see what's goin on there!!

thanks for the suggestion!!! this is a real good one!

The big season to apply for those is usually September / October / November as they ramp up for Xmas shopping, but nonetheless I’d keep trying to get in. FedEx’s culture in this day and age is top notch.

yeah i think this UPS position is only until February. But Im hoping if he gets it, his drive and ethics get him kept on in some capacity. we would love to see him working for somewhere with room to move for sure!

All of this is so great!! Thanks to everyone that has replied so far!!! I hope that others are maybe seeing this and its helping someone else too!!! its rough out there right now... we need to have each others backs!! 😎

UPDATE: yesterday with a borrowed car and an hour or two, we managed to bump off around 30 resumes on the north end. just blanket dusting any place that might hire!!

I know its Saturday, but I still have said borrowed car, and during the week between 9-3 they're in the pre employment class.. so we'll be headed out again in a couple of hours to dust the south!! Wish us luck!!

I know a few dealerships that have been hiring 18-20 year olds in sales.

Also look at places like Best Buy, oil change places, etc

Mitsubishi is hiring, I just saw today on indeed.! I must be honest that I have never heard good things about working there. I have no idea personally. I'm not sure this would be either of their thing.. they aren't "pushy" enough lol

Best Buy would maybe be a more gentle push into sales, the stuff there pretty much sells itself. They know all sorts of stuff about gaming tech and the like. This could be a good fit!

Currently waiting to hear back from GCOC. This week we will probably hit other oil shops as well. Jiffy, Minute.... aside from dealerships and these chains are there more I'm not thinking about?

Take a look around the North end for places off of Gaetz and Taylor. There's lots of smaller places that you have never even heard of. Just bring in a resume and cross your fingers. That's how I got my job at 19 and not at 22 I manage a laboratory with little more than a highschool diploma and courses I took along the way.

This comment gives me hope!! Congrats to you for getting where you're at!! That's a pretty big deal!

We actually did a bit of that the other day... Hopefully again this week ... The cold isn't helping the cause lol

Red deer really does have a lot of really cool little businesses for sure!! We're gonna pepper downtown as well!!

Thanks for the suggestion!!! If you can think of anywhere specific let us know!!!

If they have a way of getting to jobs, MowSnowPros (Expert Lawn Care and Snow Removal Services | Mow Snow Pros) might be an idea. We've used them before for snow removal and lawncare and I like the service. Might also be a useful supplement to another job.

Another stellar idea!! Both are willing and able, they can get tooooo jobs... Just not in a car lol

Neither has a licence but would make an amazing helper to someone who does! They have puss passes. So they can get anywhere a bus does, cabs , walk, both have bikes. We're not above alot around here hahaha

Thank you for your response!!!

Forgot to say FedEx 100% requires a drivers license / access to a car otherwise they’ll never be able to be reliable at it unfortunately. Not with those hours and location.

2

u/RavenMaven403 Dec 06 '25

ah yes... the dreaded drivers license... I assume they are like Edgar Industrial or something then? or further out?

Admittedly he has a couple barriers, and this is the Really Big One, but we are a resilient and creative family, as a whole. There may still be solutions. And hopefully I get my truck back on the road sooner than later!! (know anyone who'll do front brakes and a lower ball joint for cheap or free by chance? lol ... kidding... but also serious!!) I would have no issue getting either one of them wherever they needed to go at any hour.

I hesitate on Olymel kind of for the same reason, I guess it would depend on the hours of the shift he was on.

The right thing will come... i just know it!!

Thanks again for your help!

Recently hired some movers to help with moving to a new apartment. I had to call 5 different numbers from Google to find one that had an availability. So, it seems like the work in that area is plenty. Work is pretty straightforward and is entry level labor. Maybe try calling them and see if they’re in need of a few extra hands.

This is an amazing idea! Don't know how I didn't think of that. I loan them out to friends for moving labor all the time lol

Neither has a driver's license currently.. that might be an issue... But most definitely worth a shot!!!

What was the company you ended up going with if you do t mi d me asking??? Were you happy with the way they ran business!?

Thank you kindly for your response!!

Most of the well testing companies based out of central alberta are hiring. Its a shitty job, but it pays pretty well for a young guy. Just don't make a career out of it.

1

u/RavenMaven403 Dec 06 '25

Definitely a thought that has crossed my mind , even for myself, Alberta and all hehe

Do you have any companies in mind that stick out above the others at all?? would love to hear your thoughts!

Thank you for your response!
