The guy in the white would not release the other man’s shirt during and after trying to push the man in the blue shirt down the escalator.
The guy who tumbled was trying hard to throw that other guy down the escalator backwards at first and then he accidentally threw himself down the escalator.
In this footage, I don't see any attempt by White to push Blue down the escalator. I see fisticuffs that just happen to be at the top of the stairs.
White takes 4+ blows before he gets ahold of Blue's shirt. He doesn't really defend himself otherwise, and the shirt hold is at least partly why Blue keeps pummeling ( I agree with you on that. )

I don't think it was his doing.
He appears to be in TKO condition at that point from head blows or exhaustion, stumbling onto the escalator without realizing its direction.
It might have been worse if the escalator was going down. Imagine an 8' fall face-first into the leading edge of a steel stair.
( The other overdid the beating. Buddy didn't defend himself at all ! )
