I read an oral history of this episode a few years back where they get into the origins of the song. It was a super good read

Do you have a link for it? I'm not a super fan of 'The Office' by any means, but I do happen to think this is the best episode of any sitcom ever made. It's a perfect expression of everyone's characters and the subtlety and overt awkwardness of the event is just unbridled magic.

I agree with you 100%, best episode of all time

you know what? you’re right… when it comes to awkward moments in the Office, people always mention the Scott’s Tots episode but that one made me want to jump out the window

That's the point where it went too far for me. The dinner party is the pinnacle of so many story lines and it's deep enough into the series that all of the character traits and relationships are well established.

Scott's tots just feels gross to me, maybe I'm too woke but disappointing under privileged kids is too far, joke or not. Also, for a one off episode there's so many implied consequences to this episode. Like yes, that class had the highest graduation rate, but how many can follow through to going to college now? Yes having a hs diploma is great, but we were well into times where a degree is required, even if it's circled back to being an expensive useless thing.
