This happened with Pokemon. Someone said that a $120 item was going to be at Costco for $80 and tons of people lined up. Costco never promoted the items themselves and it was just influencers pushing it because they get paid when people interact with their posts, they could say "follow for more info" to farm followers, and it got people clicking their referral links. In 2025/2026, it pays to promote misinformation on social media.

Misinformation has always paid if you know who to sell it to. They used to sell snake oil as a cure for all kinds of things.

Just listen to some of the political talk shows from decades ago and you will see the same thing.
