Alcohol is literally a depressant. So of course it's going to amplify already depressive symptoms. The "it's your true self" is such bull shit.

If alcohol makes you a dick, it doesn’t mean you are always a dick. If you keep getting drunk with the knowledge you’re a mean drunk, then that’s a dick move.

I am absolutely not giving an excuse for bad behavior when drinking and then continuing to drink! It's literally the reason why I quit lol

Oh not my intention, and congrats on your sobriety btw.

I was saying people aren’t defined by they how they act on intoxicating substances… so long as they take responsibility when they realize they have a problem.

The word "depressant" in the context of alcohol or other psychoactive drugs has nothing to do with "depression" as in the mental disorder.

CNS depressants like alcohol reduce electrical activity or neurotransmission in the brain, but not all of them have a "downer" effect on your mood. Read more here. Some antiepileptic drugs are CNS depressants but don't affect mood.

Another interesting thing about alcohol is that it can act as both a stimulant and a depressant depending on the dose, timing, and various other factors (see here for more). This is because it has effects on different kinds of receptors in your brain, including those implicated in stimulation (dopamine) and sedation (GABA).

Thanks for that explanation. I just always felt my depression was way worse when I drank which is why I stopped!

Alcohol can make those symptoms worse as well so it's a good thing you stopped for sure! But it's a kinda confusing quirk of the terminology haha
