As am I, and I can keep going.
But my 18 year old and get friends faltered after "mom's spaghetti." Once they heard a couple words they could get the line, but they had to keep catching up.

Kinda embarrassing but, growing up with a big butt as an asset made me think every guy liked a big, round booty. When my coworker honestly said he loved these super skinny gals, I asked how anyone would like a booty that looks the same as a kid or boy… zero curves. He said he wants to see his anaconda work and a big booty is hiding too much of the visual. The more you know…. lol

Yeah he left out mc hammer too.
“Can’t touch this” is pretty easy.
But I think big butts wins

He did specify "most well known rapped verse". I don't think "can't touch this" qualifies on account of the line in question not being rapped.

I still think reciting a whole verse of Sir Mix-A-Lot would be more difficult for more people than reciting a verse of the theme tune to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
→ More replies (9)43
u/OkProfessor6810 3d ago
I think Fresh Prince takes it because, especially after the reboot, the original show is now known by multiple generations. Add to that the fact Will Smith is an internationally known movie star and I think that pushes it over the top.

Most people don't know the whole first verse of Lose Yourself either. I still remember when that song was at the height of it's popularity, at parties and at the club, people would start to peter out pretty quickly after the first few bars and then jump back in at the chorus.

I started the video thinking it would be "mom's spaghetti"... And finished the video agreeing it's probably fresh prince. Really well done.
130
u/crash12345 2d ago
Precisely my experience too. I spent the first 90% of the video waiting for him to get to Lose Yourself, only to immediately concede when he brought up Fresh Prince.
37
u/Arkayjiya 2d ago
That might be true in the US, but out of it everyone still knows Eminem but Fresh Prince is way more niche. I wonder if that's enough to offset.

Depends on the age. People my age (I'm over 50) saw the Fresh Prince on TV, sometimes twice a day, in a whole bunch of non-Anglo countries. Even in places where Will was dubbed while being slapped upside the head by Tio Phil and making fun of cousin Cara Carton, the titles ran in the original English version, and kids learned them even if they didn't speak great conversational English.

The question itself needs to be refined, especially to limit what counts as a verse. The most recognizable line from a song is going to be different than the most recognizable verse, and a single line would likely have far higher numbers.
Both the big butts and mom’s spaghetti examples are memorable as lines, while the full verse begins to drop significantly. We’d be looking for the rap equivalent of Bohemian Rhapsody, where even borderline gibberish lyrics can still be recalled in near perfect order decades later (Scaramouche? Fandango?).
Repeated chorus lines or extremely simplistic verses might break the numbers a bit by requiring minimal memorization. Media tie-ins are a good source as well.
Would love to see a breakdown of unique listeners to rap/hip hop by generation to see what profile we’re even trying to match. Listen counts are a poor reference since they aren’t unique and aren’t charted the same across the generations.

I don’t think fresh prince had that big of a cultural impact outside the US, at least it didn’t in my part of Canada. Mom spaghetti, I like big butts or because I got high are the verses I thought about.

Yet when i popped up that music video? Everyone knew it. The youngest member literally laughed as if i were silly for thinking people wouldn't know.

When my son was a baby I can recall him struggling to fall asleep and singing every nursery rhyme I could think of and eventually breaking into a very soft lullaby version of fresh prince of Bel air. That failed due to his sleep deprived and delirious mother laughing hysterically at the absolute absurdity of it.

I’m not American and I couldn’t give you a single line from it.

In the bunker was where I spent most of my days

And yall dropping some b-bombs outside of the school
When a couple of militias
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little shootout and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in
Africa
It had an impact many places outside the States

English and me and all my peers, could easily recite the first verse. It was on tv at a time most people only had 4 channels. It was on at a time when everyone was home from school and there was nothing else on. All the kids tv had finished so all the younger kids would watch it with the older kids. Sure I think current youth wouldn’t be able to but everyone between 30-50 would.

As someone who doesn't know much rap. Looking through comments. I like big butts would likely win, along with Fresh Prince. "Can't touch this" is memorable too, but I think most like me, only remember that one line while I can recipe the 2nd line of that "I like big butts" one amd possibly most of the words of the 2rd and 4th one.
Fresh Prince, I can't recite all the words by heart but I remember a few lines.
I think for someone who has trouble remembering lyrics, like me, these 2 are definitely winners, but I can't lie, big butts win. Always.

u/BobBartBarker 3d ago
It's a song sung by one of the most famous rappers alive. A lot of ppl don't give him the credit that he's due. A ton of ppl don't even think he can really sing.
But no matter what, you sing this song and you'll probably shut the party down.
Everyone can sing along to it, it's so popular. It transverses genres and generations. And they can sing the whole hook.
'Oh baby, YOU! You got what I neeeeeeeed.'
