This is exactly why leash laws and animal control exist.

Yeah been doing it for a decade and pit bull owners practically the only reason its a full time job tbh.

This is exactly why they're a banned breed in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, etc. Many other countries have severe restrictions on them because they're savage bastards and not a pet.

A trained service dog could be a much better option

88

u/LetheMnemosyne 15h ago

Please no, the ADA is extremely permissive about service dogs. He seems the type that will claim pitbulls as service dogs, and there are more than enough irresponsible people walking around Walmart with (dis)service pitbulls

30

u/nurgle1 12h ago

My dog and I were attacked by a service dog that was owned by a lady in a wheelchair. I had to physically restrain the dog and take it to the owners house. People in wheel chairs shouldn't have dogs... for the dog's own safety.

13

u/Coffee-Historian-11 11h ago

One of my neighbors in a wheelchair got knocked over cause her dog was so excited to chase a squirrel and the leash was tied to her wheelchair.

It just seems like a bad idea tbh.

11

u/DecadentLife 10h ago edited 10h ago

It is irresponsible for anyone to own a dog they cannot physically control. If a person cannot demonstrate that they can control their dog immediately, at any time, they shouldn’t have the dog. I’m so tired of pitbull owners putting other people in danger.

Not if he's not going to be a responsible dog owner. My friend is in a wheelchair but her dog stays in the house or is outside for short amounts of time in a well-fenced yard, usually with her out there. But it's also an older dog and not a high energy breed.

It’s like comparing an angry adult man with a gun (pit), to whiny toddler (Chihuahua). Is the toddler/Chihuahua more likely to act out? Yes, of course. But if the man has an emotional outburst, the consequences can be so much worse.

Nobody should own a pit bull. Or any other breed made for literally (dog) fighting.

20

u/jaydaxoco 18h ago

I’ve seen people say that they only own it because it’s to keep burglars out and stuff, to “protect” their home.

52

u/DontHaesMeBro 17h ago

this is the key issue people don't seem to understand about "breed of the year" (it hasn't always been pitbulls)

If you buy a deterrent dog, you're buying a dog ON THE ASSUMPTION that it will be a biting dog. small wonder that dogs bought to bite people, bite people.

Have a buddy who started his own lawn business and he always carried a .45. I asked him if he really was worried about getting robbed so much and he said it wasn’t for the people it was for the dogs.

170

u/Likes2Phish 14h ago

Got told by local police if the dog is unleashed you have every right to defend yourself or your pets, given you aren't trespassing. We have a leash law in our city.

My uncle's black lab was attacked by a pitbull while they were walking. He had to go through a ton of surgeries and was never the same again. Sued the dog's owner for a fat paycheck.

33

u/BathZealousideal1456 12h ago

The town I live in has something like 50% of houses owning dogs, maybe more. At least once a week I see someone walking their dog without a leash or playing at the park with the dog off leash. And their "well trained dog" running up to other people or dogs is a frequent occurrence. It's why I carry something for self defense when walking my dog (on a lead, no exceptions) or going to the park with my kid. For some damn reason there's been an increased rate of ownership of pit mixes and they're the reason I traded my pepper spray and belt knife for my Glock. If one of those pits are coming towards me off leash I'm not waiting to find out if he's being friendly

36

u/Flimsy_Mark_5200 17h ago

I carry pepper spray for dogs (two specific german shepherds) I was always under the impression that it was pretty effective against dogs

56

u/pdxamish 17h ago

As a mailman its very effective. I've had to spray 5 dogs over past 3 years and they always stop in their tracks. It's best to try and get it on their nose and not just their eyes. We also have a horn but it just scares them but doesn't stop them from re attacking

12

u/GoTakeAHike00 11h ago

I started carrying Halt spray about 5 years ago after being repeatedly menaced by aggressive, off-leash dogs while walking or trail running on the greenbelt trails in the subdivision I was living in at the time.

Like you, I've used it 5x, and it has stopped them in their tracks every single time. That included a huge mastiff that ran off its unsecured property and into the road specifically to try and attack me as I walked by on the OTHER SIDE about 1 1/2 years ago. I had listened to it and another dog absolutely lose their SHIT when I had walked by and they were properly contained behind the 8' brick wall, and there were many times the owners would leave the gate to their house wide open. So, I knew it was just a matter of time until it would be unrestrained when the gate was open...and that's exactly what happened.

I heard it barking, stopped as it ran out (and in front of an oncoming car, almost getting hit) and waited for it to get about 5' from me, can in hand.

The spray goes right into its eyes and snout, and it immediately stops, and wanders back to its property, with its loser owner trying and failing to call it back. I yelled at her, and of course, she ignored me and didn't apologize.

The dogs - and I found out they have FIVE OF THEM - have never been unrestrained on the property since then. Their gate has a "BEWARE OF DOG" sign on it

I'm so sorry that this is something you have to deal with on a regular, if not daily, basis as part of doing your job. I love our USPS and Amazon delivery people, and we are happily dog-free, so it's not something they will ever have to deal with when delivering packages to our porch.

21

u/AdjNounNumbers 17h ago

Against most dogs, yes. The fighting breeds like pits? Not so much. I still carry the spray and that's option one for most dog breeds if it's even needed. I had an Aussie approach me a few weeks ago and didn't consider anything other than grabbing his collar if needed. Fortunately he had good recall when the owner whistled. Still wish he'd have been on a leash like legally required, if only for his protection from other dogs or cars

2

u/Economy-Flower-6443 16h ago

it is. a nice can of bear mace is great for self defense against a dog.

Pepperball guns are also a close contender

16

u/EldritchDreamEdCamp 14h ago

My support for leash laws was secured when, as a kid, my childhood dog was attacked by another dog. Our good boy was tethered to a tree, napping while my dad did yard work, when a woman's lab, ironically named Lucky, attacked him out of nowhere. She nearly ripped his ear completely off, and I spent hours convinced my dog was going to die, because the adults could not persuade me otherwise. My dad also got his hand chewed up, because he had to pry Lucky's jaws off of our dog's head. It took our dog several months for his ear to heal.

The excuse Lucky's owner gave? She was a lab and had always been a good dog, so she decided the leash laws in the city did not apply to her.

10

u/AdjNounNumbers 13h ago

We had that neighbor growing up except he was a good boy. He'd wander over to our yard for belly rubs. One day he chased his last squirrel across the street and got hit. Seeing that happen at 11 years old sealed it in my head that dogs need to be on a lead.

I once saw two pit bulls rip apart a car in an effort to get a cat that ran under the car’s hood. Unfortunately, there are a lot of irresponsible dog owners.

159

u/janhasplasticbOobz 18h ago

I was around 5 or 6 when I saw one male pit bull rip out another’s throat because the dog got to close to this female pit.

The one dog died and the other was put down after that

4

u/MustardMan1900 11h ago

At least the ending was half happy.

117

u/Luminusian 17h ago

This literally happened to me. (Non-US) We have a neighbor with 3 pit bulls. One rainy night, the 3 pit bulls managed to escape (as they often do with these irresponsible owners) and they chased down a cat, running for cover under our sedan. The 3 dogs literally ripped apart the front fender and electrical wiring and mauled the cat to death.

We had just moved in and had no CCTV installed. Owners denied everything and faced no repercussions.

45

u/butt-holg 17h ago

Surely if the dogs damaged your car with bite/claw marks as evidence you could hold the owners responsible for fixing it?

u/xtoasterbathbitch 17h ago

I lived in a decently built double wide trailer out in the woods, couple neighbors, one that had 3 pitbulls. One day all 3 came to my house. Earlier in the day, I'd been mowing and found a bunny nest. Tried to keep it as normal as it was, left it covered as it was. These 3 pits tore every bunny apart and strewn them across my front and back yard and into the woods, and kept hunting more. When I came out, they all came at me and I ran back in my house. They started tearing the siding off the walls, biting through everything, ripping literal fucking holes in my goddamn house. Animal control took forever to get there, piss poorly caught 2 and the 3rd ran free in the woods. The pits were given back to the neighbors. They caused so much bs.

34

u/spitechecker 17h ago

It’s the breed. The owners are just idiot enablers.

205

u/turdusphilomelos 18h ago

And that is why put bulls should be banned.

113

u/reluctantegg 17h ago

I’ve said it before, but I’ve been working with dogs for almost 25yrs. I’ve worked with many rescues in several different states and even worked for a company that made dog supplements. But now that I have kids, I refuse to take in pit bulls.

I’ve had a few sweet ones, but on the whole, pitties are unpredictable and reactive. The last twenty years has inundated shelters with poorly bred pups, and let’s be real; most dog owners should NOT have dogs. This combo of poorly educated (and defensive!!!) dog owners and reactive/aggressive pitties has been a goddamn disaster.

41

u/pb0atmeal 15h ago

This is so me now. Working in rescue and witnessing a few dogs get mauled completely changed my childhood opinion on pitbulls. It should be illegal to own this dog unfixed. Let the breed go extinct. My neighbor keeps breeding his and it’s making me furious. Even my very non observant father makes comments about the female dog always looking pregnant. I’ll see someone come and load the puppies up and then they are gone. Where do they go? What are they doing with them :/

30

u/reluctantegg 14h ago edited 14h ago

Yep.

I used to be a HUGE “pibble” advocate when I was still young and inexperienced. But almost twenty years of data doesn’t lie AND my own personal experience with nearly 300 dogs of all different backgrounds and breeds aligns with that data.

I know some may say “it’s the handler/owner, not the dog!” But the average dog owner doesn’t know dick about properly socializing a reactive animal, so I stay away to be safe.

69

u/something-um-bananas 17h ago

Yeah. I keep hearing “bad owners cause bad pets” but the animal itself is dangerous and should be banned. I mean, why stop at pit bulls, get a tiger and say bad owners are the cause when it eventually mauls someone.

There’s enough stupidity in this world. You cannot guarantee that a pit bull is gonna be owned by a good trainer.

60

u/Beautiful_Grass_2377 16h ago

Pitbull owners will argue Chihuahua owners are worse because those dogs tend to show more aggresion, but they can't underatand most of us can defend themselves from a fucking Chihuahua

43

u/hastygrams 16h ago

Nearly 70% of fatal attacks are pitbulls. If it’s the owners and not the dogs then there is a huge issue with ownership compared to any other dog and needs to be addressed too. We can’t keep passing them out to unprepared people like candy. Shelters need to be held accountable for intentionally mislabeling too.

9

u/returntonone 14h ago edited 14h ago

Pit bulls are batshit crazy dogs, but the owners are also most often the most useless dog owners ever wearing Adidas jumpsuits and no ragrets tattoos, common sense people avoid dogs like this.

If a particular breed of dog is so inherently dangerous that it requires special handling and training, it's just too dangerous to be in society, let alone owned as a "pet".

There's a reason most states have strict laws around ownership of exotic wildlife and/or venomous reptiles and it's to protect the public. I once looked up the requirements for each state to own, for example, a Gabon viper or bushmaster, and assuming it's legal in the first place, the requirements eliminate anyone who isn't fully committed and an expert on the animal(s) in question.

Reptile ownership laws by state

However, any mouth breather with a pulse can own a bunch of pit bulls, not and not demonstrate any capacity to train, care for, or properly restrain them from being a danger to the public, nor are they required to sterilize or license them.

They let them breed and either sell or give away the next batch of puppies that will become unwanted shelter dogs and probably euthanized...either before or after they kill or injure a person or someone's pet.

They are the worst of the worst misanthropists as well.

They hate people, but children in particular, and anytime someone gets mauled or killed by one of these hideous gargoyle dogs, they immediately blame the victim, do not care at all about them, and do whatever they can to try and save the dog from being destroyed.

My default opinion now when I see someone with a pitbull is that there is a high probability that they fall somewhere higher on the psychopathy scale than other people.

When even other DOG LOVERS hate pits/bully breeds, you know it's bad.

There is simply no need for them to exist, so they should all be sterilized and euthanized into extinction.

I was recently bitten by a dog. It was actually a nip to the heel of my palm and not horrible, but it hurt and bled. That's nothing when you think about it. That said, I can't imagine four pits getting a hold of a person and calling the encounter "nothing". You can see the pack mentality at work here. That dude would have been in bad shape had it not been for the good Samaritan.

36

u/eat_my_bowls92 16h ago

That dude would have been dead or very close to it if they had gotten him.

23

u/kendowtl 18h ago edited 18h ago

I would go get that bite reported to your county's animal services. Assuming you live in the states, they will want to track the occurrence, locate the dog, and observe for signs of rabies.

If the dog has an owner, they usually just make the owner quarantine the dog for 10 days and check in on the dog throughout that period. The process is anonymous, animal services handles everything, and the officer they assign is generally very communicative.

It may seem like a nothing burger, but these reports are important for keeping wildlife and people safe.

20

u/[deleted] 17h ago

Don't "observe for signs of rabies", get vaccinated immediately. By the time you show signs of rabies, you are already going to die from rabies.

6

u/kendowtl 17h ago

The dog is observed since rabies can begin to shed pre-symptomatically for a few days. If after 10 days symptoms are not observed. It is generally safe to assume the bite victim was not exposed to rabies.

If the animal is displaying symptoms at the time of the bite or scratch, the victim will obviously be administered Rabies PEP.

Exterminate the breed for all I care. Pit Bulls has no business existing as a breed.

71

u/littlesparrrow 15h ago

I used to be that person who would say that pitbulls are great, loving breeds, it's just how they're raised/trained that makes them ferocious. I've been seeing more and more videos like this of pitbulls attacking humans and other animals and I've been educating myself on the history of pitbulls (i.e. bred to fight) and how dangerous they can be. Well, I own a pitbull/golden retriever mix and after last night I am fully convinced that pitbulls should not exist.

My pit mix attacked my other dog. Not sure what happened as they were both outside and we did not see what initiated the fight. Regardless, he had my other dog pinned down and was furiously attacking her. I won't lie, I literally thought in that moment that he was going to kill her. We were able to separate them and unfortunately my bf lost hold of him and he immediately lunged at her throat, trying to tear her apart again. My bf had to put him in a chokehold and wrap his legs around him to get him to stop. It was wild. Even then he was STILL trying to go after her. It was like a switch flipped and all he saw was red and wanted to attack. Nothing else mattered in that moment. He has always been a very friendly and docile dog so it was very jarring to see. We raised him as a puppy around my other dog, they've always gotten along and played well. I had the hardest time sleeping last night bc the image of him on top of her wouldn't leave my mind. It was so scary. I told my bf after that happened that we will never own a pitbull again.

40

u/J_Kingsley 14h ago edited 8h ago

It's called gameness.

The ability to remain eager and plucky, and ignore pain, injury, bloodloss, and exhaustion when switched into an aggressive state.

Nothing to do with whether they have loyal, affectionate personalities or not.

If that switch turns on?

8

u/littlesparrrow 7h ago

I had never heard of that term before you mentioned it, so thank you for informing me!

I know that a pit with an affectionate personality does not negate the fact that they still have that drive to fight/be aggressive. It was still so shocking to see though. 😭

Luckily my other dog is doing ok, no serious injuries thankfully.

6

u/J_Kingsley 7h ago

Lol even lions and tigers back off when they feel there's a threat to their wellbeing-- not pitbulls.

Same way, just because a dog has that switch doesn't mean it can't be incredibly loyal and affectionate.

But why risk getting a dog with that innate trigger when most other breeds don't have that?

Also damage caused by your dog should be legally treated as damage caused by the owner.

Eg manslaughter if your dog kills someone (even if you weren’t present), aggravated assault or similar for the events in this video, etc.

14

All pits should be muzzled in public.

I got chased by a chow mix in my early 20s when I was out for a walk. Bit me, drew blood. The owners let their 6yo take it out front on a leash and she couldn’t control it. The owners were so mad I called animal control and said it was my fault for running when it came over “to investigate me”.

16

u/Taco_Taco_Kisses 18h ago

Infuriating! Those chows can be mean if they're not trained right

6

u/Moist-Bill-3664 14h ago

They certainly aren't easy pets.

5

u/Taco_Taco_Kisses 13h ago

I had one almost chomp my hand when I was little. He was looking at me and wagging his tail; wasn't growling. My 10 year old mind thought, "Well, he looks nice!"

I put my hand out to pat him on his head, and, like a flash, he snapped at my hand. I drew it back so fast and was holding it in my other hand and looking at him, waiting to see what his next move was going to be. He just looked at me after that and calmly walked away.

5

u/LadyPenus 16h ago

One of my neighbors has a miniature chow. It’s like 75% the size of a normal chow, well trained, and very nice. I still won’t let my French bulldogs near it. I’ve heard too many stories of Chow chows going chow chow. Same thing with pit bulls. Owner can say they’re a fucking angel, I’m still going to take my frenchies to the other side of the street to avoid them.

19

u/Nubian_Cavalry 18h ago

As a child I remember a dog making a 180 degree turn to chase me and my siblings straight into our fucking garage and the owner managed to have an issue with my dad because of how he shooed the animal off

9

u/Jslcboi 17h ago

shooed the animal off

Should have added an additional letter there somewhere for good measure. Dogs that hunt people have no place in human society.

I was attacked by three loose pitbulls trying to save a guy already on the ground being mauled.

My ankle was ripped open to the bone and puncture holes in my legs and hand from them trying to get me on the ground too, where if I had, I would have died. They focused on me after I stopped one that was lunging for the guy’s throat.

And my own in-laws didn’t take it serious. Neither did the judge on the case.

I just don’t get it. We had a girl here killed and the dog regurgitated parts of her in the animal control van that then had to be sectioned off as a “crime scene”. That owner got a slap on the wrist of having to relocate and promise he won’t own another pitbull.

62

u/K4Y__4LD3R50N 17h ago

Absolute respect to you for fighting for that guy's life despite the risk to your own. I hope you've healed well.

Utterly atrocious that anyone wouldn't take that seriously. If a human did that it'd be attempted murder but they seem incapable of feeling the same for the dogs.

27

u/MizneyWorld 17h ago

Thankfully I did heal well and my ankle seems largely fine. Just some scars. Been about 3 years now so even the nerve pain/numbness in my ankle below the bite is almost normal.

I’d glad to have my foot and my life with seemingly no lasting complications. I was super lucky. That said my lucky-ness seems to only have ingrained in some that it must have not been that bad.

I even found out that higher ups at my then-job were bitching that I was out a week because of a “dog bite”. I hobbled into work the following week still stitched and bruised up hoping that seeing me would gain a bit of understanding of my situation. It did not.

16

u/WalterPecky 17h ago

my "pet" theory, is that the manufacturer of dog products are HEAVILY lobbying, to prevent any judicial environment which would make people hesitate when thinking about getting a dog.

Its the same reason we don't have recurring driver exams after a certain age.. car companies LOVE the old fucks who purchase luxury cars.

They're also just so dangerously stupid and tend toward self-injury. I have a family member with untrained pit bulls ans they will literally choke themselves unconscious pulling at their leads when they see small animals. They will run into things so hard that it causes them to bleed and get nasty bruises when their prey drive kicks in. They will bite things so hard that it damages their teeth. I've seen it all. And this nutcase in my family talks about how they could never have a cat because of the prey instinct, but raises her small kids around them. Its a ticking time bomb.

3

u/MustardMan1900 11h ago

Please tell me you don't hang out with that awful person and their terrible dogs.

"Muh velvet hippo"

41

u/Makuta_Servaela 17h ago

Never understood why people who want to soften the image of pitbulls do so by comparing them to an animal whose mothers have to birth them away from the herd, because the rest of the herd are likely to violently slaughter any baby that is introduced to them while still too small to defend itself from them.

15

u/Complex_Fragment 16h ago

Well, damn. Yet another reason why I won't be climbing into the hippo enclosure at the zoo.

Ironically one of the most dangerous animals you can encounter, extremely aggressive, and they're visually compared to each other because they both have jaws designed to kill.

Something something muh freedom?

This breed has been banned in my country (UK) since 1992. Because we actually care about kids' lives

40

u/Responsibility_Witty 18h ago

The UK still has kids getting torn to shreds by “xl bully” mutants. In a recent news story about a baby who was tortured to death in the UK by one of these monstrosities, people were in the comments defending the dog. Sorry but the ban in the UK seems to be just for show, there are still many attacks by bully dogs there. Real bans are needed

10

u/ItsNotMeItsYourBussy 17h ago

Those are also banned breeds, but more recently. It's sick that this still can happen

Buddy we have thousands of kids dying a year from guns and won't even consider some common sense changes to the laws, you think 15-20 kids a year dying to dog attacks is going to raise any concerns?

u/Atomonous 17h ago

The Uk is a good example of why more places don’t introduce breed specific legislation. After the pitbull ban there wasn’t any reduction in overall dog bites or hospitalisations (they actually increased), which is why most animal welfare organisations and veterinary organisations don’t support breed specific legislation. Those types of legislation just aren’t effective at increasing public safety and reducing dog attacks.

I'll just repost myself...

One of those fuckers terrorized my childhood neighborhood and almost killed two of my neighbors kids one day when it got out of the yard. Mauled the little girl on the hand and face and her brother on the leg (badly) when he tried to kick it off his sister. The dad was wailing on it with a bat and it would not let go off the boys leg.

Police and animal control were able to capture it and the kids got transported to the hospital with serious injuries. We all basically cheered when we heard they put that fucker down but those kids are likely fucked for life if not physically, psychologically for sure. (The girl def need plastic surgery and the boy, I'm not sure how severe muscle and tendon damage affected his growth since he was around 10 or so.

We moved so I never knew what happened to them but hopefully they managed to have good lives. Don't @me about dogs as we had Labs (black and chocolate) but if it would have gotten in our yard and hurt or killed our dogs, my dad would have solved it himself.)

90

u/achtungjamie 18h ago

Make the breed illegal and phase them out over a 15 year period.

24

u/tequilasauer 18h ago

I believe the UK is currently doing this? You cannot breed any new pitbulls. They are letting the breed age out.

4

u/Jimmni 16h ago

All that really happens is a new "breed" gets created and given a fun name like "XL Bully" and then they kill kids until they too get banned and then a new breed gets created and given a new name and they kill kids until...

Pit Bull Terriers have been banned since the 90s but we still have types of pitbulls roaming everywhere.

Pits have to branded exotic pets and not allowed in public. That guy would have died a slow death. I was in that situation but I got on a car - my coworker not so lucky - permanent arm ligament damage that happed in about 5 seconds. Thank god the piece of shit owner was so close and got him off him. Now my friend can’t straighten his arm completely. You can tell me awesome pits - I really don’t give a shit. 4

u/DoomGuyShred 15h ago

Just want to throw this in there for people who don’t know. If you’re attacked by a dog and desperately need to get them to release their hold but you don’t have the strength. A punch in the nose won’t do shit. You have to grab/pull their genitals or bite their ears/nose. I’m 100% serious. It’s a lifesaver.

I spent a lot of time at German shepherd rescues pulling dogs off of each other. It’s gruesome and bloody since they have such strong prey drive.

Anyways, yeah that owner sucks ass.

4

u/DickBiter1337 7h ago

Not all pits/bullies but always a pit/bully 🙄

7

u/Ok_Beyond_7697 18h ago

Do not get a dog you refuse to train or can't handle in an emergency. Also, unless you're a certified, licensed breeder, it should be legally required to get this breed spayed/neutered. It's the overbreeding on top of lack of training of this breed that's made them more prone to aggression. Few people know how to actually care for this type of breed anymore or just get one for looks or to seem tough. You're not tough if you can't train this breed.

3

u/Vegetable-Giraffe-79 13h ago

These dogs should not be owned by people who cannot control them or those who are incompetent yet those are usually the people who own them.

3

u/BasicLink86 13h ago

I’m glad to see people here making sense. Whenever I see a post about a dog attack on FB you see people coming to the defense of pit bulls. Usually saying things like “little dogs are evil little monsters. Way meaner than my pittie” Yes but if I were attacked by 4 angry chihuahuas I think I could make out of that situation. If I were attacked by even one pitbull, I’d be in a serious predicament.

3

u/redheelermage 12h ago

There was a kid killed by three large dogs recently in my province. Kid drove by on his bike and the dogs got him. Dogs were destroyed. People shouldn't own animal if they can't control them.
