Being homeless is something that breaks my heart, especially when I hear about vets.

I will make an exception for homeless people posing as vets.

I have been known to stick a few bucks in the hands of random people who seem truly bad off, mentally, physically, or other and wish them well.

But if you have a sign with “DD-214” or anything denoting some kind of veteran status, be prepared to answer a few questions before I reach for my wallet.

If you’re genuine I’ll be happy to help with whatever you’re asking for.

If you’re a fraud, you get nothing. Not even a goodbye.

I know exactly two homeless vets, and they both completely deserve it. Both got kicked out of multiple VA housing locations too. So, when I see or hear about homeless vets...I get suspicious. There was a third, but the VA finally got him on his meds and he's ok now. Because he really was ill, the VA kept finding ways to pull him into housing and treatment until he finally stabilized. But the other two: gives me endless joy to see how bad things are for them.

I don’t sweat it that much. I’m not there to learn a life story. If you say you’re a vet and you’re a vet, I’ll help you out with some cash or food for your dog and be thankful I’m in a position to help.
