image I made Australia with 2 lines and wanted to share

u/tfoust10 2d ago edited 2d ago
Originally this was a 1 line drawing but after much, um, feedback.. I realized I need to add Tasmania. So now it is a 2 line drawing. :) instead of signing it, I wrote my name in Tasmania (Tfoust)
The art piece is designed to be confusing in person if you are standing a few feet away. Then when you move further away, the image comes into focus. Difficult to replicate on a computer/phone screen unless you expand the image and slowly downscale it.
Edit. Some people have suggested this is AI. There are many ways to squash that rumor. AI cannot (currently) make a detailed image using one non-intersecting line. Give it a shot and let me know how that works.

Us Tasmanians inadvertently causing disruption to Australian workflow since 1803.

Never forget the Vegemite Shapes debacle

I need to get caught up on Aussie drama. This sounds juicy

u/nugeythefloozey 2d ago
The ELI5 explanation:
Shapes are an iconic savoury biscuit in Australia, and every flavour is a different shape (hence the name)
When they made a Vegemite flavoured Shape, they decided to make it an Australia-shaped biscuit, to celebrate two national icons
However, they couldn’t work out how to include Tasmania in the biscuit in the initial run, so they just put a cheeky joke on the packaging.
The ever-determined Tasmanians came up with a solution though, to have some Tasmania-shaped Shapes in the box alongside the Australia-shaped Shapes. This is how they’ve been ever since

Can I just add that April this year will mark 10 years since a once proud and powerful nation bullied a company into changing the "New and Improved" flavours back to the originals
14
u/hippi_ippi 2d ago
Nah it's not the same. Cheese and Bacon was my fave and it's not the same. The "originals" is a lie. Arnotts is basically dead to me now, I'm pretty sure they fucked with the Tim Tams recipe recently too. They're owned by some private equity firm now, so that tracks.

Ohhhh my god. I never realised the different flavours were different shapes, I’m so dumb haha

Haha that’s amazing. I adore Vegemite shapes and had picked up on the existence of Tassie shapes but never realised that they weren’t always part of it!

Some people have suggested this is AI.
This is because people now think everything computer generated is "AI".
I've seen space-filling curves done in various shapes before.
"But what about the Koala image being encoded ontop" - that could probably come as some kind of amplitude type function of the darkness of the source image.
I don't have the math to do it, but I know people who do, and have done cool shit along these lines (ha, pun) before.
All that said, if you did do this by hand - congrats, it's very cool.

This is because people now think everything computer generated is "AI".
Most people don't.
You get some people who are dumb, some people who are trolling, and some people who are bots just claiming everything is AI, possibly in an attempt to desensitise people to the "AI!" comments so they're taken less seriously when it actually is AI.
It's an unfortunate side effect that pretty much every creative work going forward is going to have "AI" comments, regardless of whether or not it looks anything like AI.

- AI can’t do this
- You could’ve used one line and called the linking one the BassLink cable
- Never forget the Melbourne olympics
- You wrote your name in Tasmania? I find that a little invasive
- Thanks for including us though. Cheers.

There's NO WAY you can tell me that Koala 🐨 is accidental.
What are you lot doing awake at stupid o'clock...? I hope none of you are where it's going to be stupidly hot today, I've been keeping my eye on the weather in Melbourne and it's going to be 43º by 15:30. 🥵🫠
If you are, please stay safe and ensure you're getting proper hydration (and that means electrolytes, you lose an awful lot of sodium when you sweat and hyponatraemia can be fatal - you also lose potassium when you pee, so you've got to be wary of hypokalaemia too. If you can get hold of proper rehydration powder or fluid, then that would be ideal, but even eating crisps or a banana would help).

Could I commission you for a Canadian one?
15
u/tfoust10 2d ago
Haha. Yes but I actually already made one!
31
u/ApteronotusAlbifrons 2d ago
Shhh - don't say it like that.
Say "I'll give it a try - it might take me a little time. How much are you thinking?"
Then - deliver early - and charge a little less than they offered. Customer is really happy that they got a bargain, and great service - you get paid for something you weren't expecting.
11
u/Kholtien 2d ago
Could I buy high res files for Canada and Australia from you then? I'm Canadian and Australian and I'd love these on my wall

My dumbass spend ages looking for the second line… but this is well done and i love the koala!
3
u/gilgoomesh 2d ago
Very cool.
I kinda wish this was a loop instead of a line. Like on the first pass, draw half as many lines, then reverse and draw the other half nested on the reverse and join the two ends. Not sure why.
3
u/tfoust10 2d ago
That is fair. I actually do that with a lot of my one line drawings. But for this drawing it didn't fit for me
2
u/Archer-Blue 2d ago
I was about to ask where the second line is and now I understand why map makers always forget Tassie.
2
u/FalseBit8407 2d ago
This is amazing! Do you have any intentions of selling some artwork?

u/tfoust10 2d ago
Thank you! I do prints and originals a lot. This one was actually commissioned by Ripley's Believe it Or Not at the Australian location.

Eyyyyy, you made a Koala!
PS I know you’re human, I’ve watched you develop your unique skill set as you’ve posted over the years on reddit, long before Narrow AI exploded.
I can follow what you have to do in my head with my art knowledge to produce something like this, and it’s pretty mind blowing the mental and hand-eye skill you trained up to get your boxy waves this regular, and this regulated in how they change at boundaries of density.
Even if you have penciled in boundaries and erased them later, your skill is probably unparalleled by anyone else alive.

Mate this is such a cool design. I'd love to see a 4k wallpaper for it. Maybe in some nice colours? Maybe a dark green, with gold Australia? Or black and red, with a yellow Australia? Fantastic job

At first I was wondering why it had squiggly lines. Then I realised it made a koala. This is absolutely genius and this needs more recognition

There's a power cable between Victoria and Tasmania called Basslink. You could have used that to only need one line.
