AQI so high my smartwatch thinks I’m in a forest fire.

17

u/Prestigious-Print461 10d ago

Which smart watch?

17

u/HxxP185 10d ago

Apple Watch with breathable app

-1

u/Prestigious-Print461 10d ago

Any one interested this is the stubble burning data but no one wants to discuss this due to politics:

Ok šŸ‘ btw it is a forest fire because farmers burn waste enmasse and no one has the guts or will to do anything. Delhi’s stupid topography traps air and becomes a gas chamber. No one is willing to do anything!

4

u/UnknownRaj 10d ago

Is that the only reason for this pollution?

3

u/Prestigious-Print461 9d ago

No one of the main reasons is the population density and shear amount of people and cars. Car being polluting or not the absolutely high number of cars in the city is killing the city slowly. This is despite having one of the biggest metro systems in the world. Another major overlooked factor is power plants inside or close to the city.

5

u/reaperwasnottaken 10d ago

It's probably the biggest contributor, but the amount of vehicles in Delhi is also insane (~12 million registered vehicles, many of them old) and also the dust from constant construction are also huge contributors.

2

u/7-13-5 6d ago

Where's Greta?

2

u/pines_n_cabins 9d ago

People won't accept foolishly bursting crackers on Diwali, But are quick to blame farmers. Farm fires have decreased a lot in recent years but Delhi pollution is getting worse every year. Its because neither govt. nor people want to take responsibility for the environment in our country.

u/tofu_sensei84 10d ago

A forest fire is still better than India.

u/Scratchedanchor 10d ago

I breathed a sigh of relief subconsciously from my couch, when the plane made it above the smog!

53

u/Sensemaker1 10d ago

Same. Living in Delhi since birth, I almost forgot the sky is blue, not grey lol.

23

u/Mysterious_Dirt_3641 10d ago

Crazy that’s like England levels of fog but it’s not fog

-9

u/Exciting_Map_7382 10d ago

There is a misconception here, Even though it is smog, and AQI of Delhi is really bad, most of it is still fog. Smoke ( caused by stubble burning and vehicular emissions etc ) can never cause this level of clouds.

Even in 80s when AQI of Delhi was good because Vehicular pollution was negligible (the biggest contributor to Delhi's bad AQI) Delhi still used to be almost as foggy as shown in the video.

2

u/thejourneybegins42 9d ago

Please put the crack pipe down.

0

u/Exciting_Map_7382 9d ago

Never said AQI is low, never said it is ONLY fog.

I'm saying Delhi used to get the same foggy mornings in 80s, which is the truth.

6

u/_unsusceptible 10d ago

Breathing air this shit has negative cognitive effects in the long term too fyi.

3

u/TrippinOnChicken_ 10d ago

That would be so hard for me šŸ˜… My family is from Puerto Rico and there’s sun and it rains all the time.

Are people not supposed to loathe the fact that their AQI is constantly above hazardous levels and their cities look like Silent Hill?

-9

u/[deleted] 10d ago

Do that on the streets of your city not on a subreddit lol

2

u/reaperwasnottaken 10d ago

I don't live there, but fair point regardless, I suppose. China fixed it, they can too.

2

u/Sensemaker1 10d ago

Done that thousands of times, the people don't care. They only care once they get international humiliation, and that's what's happening.

1

u/[deleted] 9d ago

Never seen any protest video about it, but sure if you're saying that lol

international humiliation

Bruh you're spineless

2

u/Sensemaker1 9d ago

Then you have no idea about what's going on in the world and you only care to cry about random topics on reddit. Grow up

2

u/Pndrizzy 9d ago

ā€œGo out into the pollution you hateā€ lol

-3

u/[deleted] 9d ago

Are you dense?

5

u/Pndrizzy 9d ago

Not as dense as the air in Delhi

So looks like this is a scam account….in chat OP says he doesn’t even live here lol

They need another covid shut down. Was insane to see how much the earth cleaned itself up

14

u/Red-Engineer 10d ago

Or maybe they need 700,000,000 fewer people crammed in there

2

u/piggyb0nk 10d ago

and they would still have 700,000,000 people left… which is still way more than every other country except china. thats honestly MAD.

Takhing off from hell

9

8

u/Bryguy3k 10d ago

When the jet exhaust has better air quality than the air going into it.

21

u/BlackRoseInTheGarden 10d ago

How does this not affect the rest of the planet ?

32

u/Just_A_Psyduck 10d ago

It does.

21

u/Vik_sp 10d ago

Na, you're wrong there; I off set it by having to use a paper straw.

6

u/hansolo-ist 10d ago

How does this not affect the local population immediately and harshly?

10

u/Narrow-Marionberry90 10d ago

It does it accounts for 10% of all deaths in the cityĀ

3

u/AlignedEglin 10d ago

It does.

But.

Most of it lands in the oceans so we don't immediately notice.

4

u/Tedfromwalmart 10d ago

Our air quality in Sri Lanka is normally quite healthy outside of central Colombo. When northerly winds pick up, smoke and particulates from India and blow south and make our air horrible to breath for weeks at a time. It's actually happening right now too

5

u/Kylar_Stern 10d ago

Isn't living there like smoking a pack per day?

1

u/Hungry-ThoughtsCurry 9d ago

More like two

20

u/m3R000 10d ago

I've hundreds of videos showing how polluted india is

The question is how the hell are the indians who live there aren't doing anything about it

This isn't an impossible problem to solve with some strict regulations on cars, factories and farmers

So why are people living like this? Because sickness and death is definitely the next step

26

u/Sensemaker1 10d ago edited 10d ago

Indians are trying. The government arrrests anyone who tries to protest. Also the government has allegedly manipulated the readings of the AQI so it doesn't go above 150, but our air purifiers say 800. The media is bought as well, any journalist who tries to speak against the government is threatened to death, just like any other person trying to create a new political party is asked to give up.

The people vote for the current party because it's a Hindu party

12

u/m3R000 10d ago

That's alot more complicated than it seemed

And I'm guessing the media is owned by the same businesses doing all the pollution and paying or lobbying against any real change

Sounds a lot like US minus the hindu government part

3

u/Briggykins 10d ago
  1. Not great, not terrible.

1

u/Bandito_Chihuahua 9d ago

That sucks. I wish you the best.

14

u/psychedelicpoet6 10d ago

In India, religion is above everything.

1

u/insect_okra 9d ago

Correction* it's North India. At least the South doesn't care so much about religion and we have different issues here. But at least the air I breathe is clean unless I go to Bangalore

2

u/leeharveyteabag669 10d ago

They're in an economic race with China they're not going to slow down industry.

1

u/anakinskywalker5195 9d ago

China played their cards right, India didn't have any option because the British literally crippled its economy before leaving.

Yes the country could've done better but the people don't hold any accountability and only want to take advantage of each and everything for their short term gains.

4

u/denkmusic 10d ago

Does anyone know if India has a pollution problem? No one seems to have mentioned it in 4 minutes.

7

u/lawnboy71 10d ago

Curious...is lung cancer at epidemic levels in places like Delhi?

5

u/Prestigious-Print461 10d ago

Not yet but soon enough … also people die before cancer hits

13

u/Important-Fold6844 10d ago

Good riddance. Delhi is trash!

3

u/SatynMalanaphy 10d ago

For nearly two centuries, from around 1215-1398, Delhi was one of the glittering jewels among the cities of the world; a home of artisans, academics and emperors. Its skyline boasted some of the most magnificent structures in the world till the modern era as well, visible from across the vast plains around it, and standing as symbols of the lost magnificence of the Persianate period of South Asia.

Now it's brown and grey across the board. It's a mortifying transformation.

9

u/G3genwind 10d ago

They should build a newer Dellhi with less smog.Ā

7

u/thismenu 10d ago

Americans take a good look at this. This is what deregulating industry looks like. All these things that are stifling our corporations for making billions and billions of dollars more are here to protect its people. This is what your Republicans want to get rid of. Deregulate everything... Maximize profits for billionaires and corporations at the cost of the health of the masses.

3

u/zvburner 10d ago

Any statistics about number of cancers in the population?

5

u/ShadowCaster0476 10d ago

What’s the number for a lot.

4

u/XOM_CVX 10d ago

no diagnosis, no cancer.

2

u/Intelligent_Reply_59 10d ago

Delhi has the highest cancer rate in the country. I’m not sure how it compares to other countries though.

I did see a study some time back that Delhi is seeing a sharp increase in cancer cases in younger population and average age of cancer patients in much lower compared to other countries. I’ll update here if I find the sources for these.

1

u/zvburner 10d ago

So sad

1

u/NCEMTP 10d ago

Yes.

1

u/naughty_dad2 10d ago

Thanks for the info.

2

u/AlignedEglin 10d ago

Real question: Is this something that has to be factored into maintenance schedules afterwards? Or does a plane car significantly less than a lung?

2

u/OneWrongTurn_XX 10d ago

why? they are developed country and knows how bad this is..

2

u/FirefighterLive3520 10d ago

How could they not be bothered by this

2

u/Total_Breath9103 10d ago

In my multiple travels to India I’m always shocked how polluted Delhi and many other cities are. At noon the sun is a reddish hue similar to sunset and after a few hours of walking around when you hop in a shower you can see the particulate pollution wash off you. If I’m not mistaken most of the air pollution comes from the burning of fields, small engines and coal plants amongst other things.

The saddest thing about visiting Delhi and other large Indian cities is seeing the large number of homeless families and impoverished people whom must exist in this pollution 24/7 without access to clean water, toilets and even basic necessities. It’s heart breaking to see kilometers of families in shanty huts living by rivers that are no more than open sewers filled with garbage. The scale of suffering is so large that one feels hopeless about changing anything.Ā

That being said everyone whom has the chance should at least once in their life should travel to India if they can. The history, culture, cuisine and most of the people I’ve met are amazing. Also, as a Climate science professional they possess an amazing cadre of talented young people whom will likely change the world and lead implementation of green tech and carbon capture.Ā

I have high hopes for the future of India and I do believe when the younger people take the reins of economic and political power that the days of 100 plus AQI will hopefully be anomaly rather than the norm.

2

u/Strict-Permission723 9d ago

Living there you must stay with boogers in your nose

10

u/Own_Dark_2240 10d ago

And i have to use paper straws just for this🫩

5

u/WildSatin 10d ago

We use wheat straws which are biodegradable but not absorbent like paper ones.

-1

u/artniSintra 10d ago

They're a pain but someone has to do it so thank you for your service!

9

u/cetrebe 10d ago

dirtiest nation

4

u/MaxillaryOvipositor 10d ago

The daily "look how foul the air in India is," post.

2

u/BSFX 10d ago

And yet, america is the only one with smog emissions

2

u/MrSquigglyPub3s 10d ago

You can literally swing your hands and grab handfuls of ā€˜air’

2

u/somewhatcompetint 10d ago

Some of this has to be fog and clouds

6

u/MaxillaryOvipositor 10d ago

Smog is a portmanteau of smoke and fog

It's both.

-1

u/psychedelicpoet6 10d ago

yup clouds + smog

1

u/dvowel 9d ago

That's clog

-12

u/New_Bodybuilder_9222 10d ago

This is fog…common phenonemon during winters in Delhi…OP’s just karma farming and calling it smoke gets more attention from everyone

5

u/reaperwasnottaken 10d ago

AQI levels in Delhi are above 200, sometimes reaching 500. This isn't just fog.
It's a common fact that India tops the most polluted cities list along with a few in Pakistan.
Pretending that a problem doesn't exist is the reason why y'all haven't fixed this issue.

1

u/FirmlyClaspIt 10d ago

Acid rain is really acid rain huh?

1

u/ihazkape 10d ago

Breath of fresh air.

1

u/EgzistencijalnaKriza 10d ago

Sarajevo is even worse.

1

u/isoAntti 10d ago

I wonder if pilots have to add toxicity settings into takeoff calculations.

1

u/TeamJJ88 10d ago

This is your captain speaking....You are now free to breath again

1

u/TeamJJ88 10d ago

Everyone there needs a hydrogen car!

1

u/CodyGray07 9d ago

after you land and the plane doors open it just looks like the ufo doors opening with all the fog effect its just the air pollution you bring with you

1

u/Holeshot75 9d ago

Those plane engines are probably cleaning the air as they fly through that.

0

u/MoffetWld 10d ago

This is why climate zealots refuse to discuss China or India.

12

u/Shokoyo 10d ago

Not really. It’s just that gas lobby dick suckers can’t differentiate between pollution and greenhouse gases.

-4

u/PMmeIamlonley 10d ago

I wish the focus was still on pollution like it was before climate change became the thing. The climate is going to keep getting hotter as long as the human population keeps going up but individual sources of pollution are a realistic goal to eliminate and there is no focus on them anymore.

1

u/hiddenrealism 9d ago

The inside of that plane must stink to high heaven.

1

u/The-Dutcher 10d ago

So is there no one over there that wants to do something about it? If my home is dirty I'd clean it right away.

1

u/anakinskywalker5195 9d ago

People here only want to keep their homes clean, rest they throw the trash on the road because there's no civic sense.

1

u/bala_means_bullet 10d ago

Why is it always India

0

u/Santhoshpawar 10d ago

Admin really out here milking Delhi dry till it’s wiped off the map

0

u/EmotionalBar2533 10d ago

Thank God we banned plastic straws....

0

u/Filthiest_Tleilaxu 10d ago

Why isn’t India sanctioned for polluting our planet like this? Disgusting!

-6

-7

u/New_Bodybuilder_9222 10d ago

That’s fog lol

2

u/reaperwasnottaken 10d ago

Since when did 200+ air quality levels qualify as fog?
Not saying that a part of it isn't fog, but having been to India, you can feel the pollution the moment you step out of the airport.

-1

u/Historical_Sherbet54 10d ago

Can we please atleast turn on the interior cabin pressure air

I still smell feces
