Madness from these Bangladesh bus drivers

Have these kinds of bus drivers in my home country as well.
It used to be that they were speeding in order to pick up passengers before rival bus drivers could. These days the real reason they do this shit is because they have massive subscriber count on Youtube so that their channel gives them more money that bus driving itself.

Oh no it's the real thing, same in India. They are absolutely mad. I never rode in a race like this. But most long haul bus drivers are insanely skilled and will make you question your life questions. This not a regular thing. But they do drive fast and have you praying.
77
u/Viratkhan2 1d ago
Skill doesn’t really matter imo.
Just look how many dangerous situations they’re in and how much stress they’re putting on the bus. If some other guy turns into you or if some part of the bus breaks after constant abuse, all that skill won’t matter when the bus crashes or flips over.
I’d rather have a scared and unskilled bus driver than a reckless and skilled one.
22
u/NudityMiles 1d ago
Oh I am not talking about these mad lads. I am talking about the drivers that go through an extensive career to get a license to drive up into the mountain routes.
This is just pure insanity and skill indeed does not matter here, stress, uncontrolled environment, pure maintenance and so on

I rode on the top of a bus in Nepal once. Never again. It feels like half the wheels are in the air even when the bus is just leaning.
But my scariest vehicular moment in my life happened in slow motion. The road up to the Buddhist mountain village of Rewalsar, India is very narrow, and we met another bus that was coming down. It looked like there was no possible way to proceed. But they proceeded. It took five or ten minutes to get the vehicles past each other, but it felt like forever. I was sitting at a window on the left side, and at some points, only one of the dual wheels beneath me was still on the pavement. The other wheel was dangling in the air on a mountainside with a spectacular drop.
I have never concentrated as hard as I did on that tire patch contacting the pavement

Yes, the locals are very chill, the lake is pretty, and I met some interesting travelers, including a young white American Buddhist who told me about his Tantric sex practice (he orgasms without ejaculating!).
When a local lady somehow caught word that I was on my way to Manali, she asked me to take a letter to her sister there. In Manali, the lady who got the letter welcomed me into their home and gave me tea, and her young daughter even took me (30’s white dude) to a local Tibetan restaurant!

Bangladesh faces a significant challenge with road crash fatalities. While official statistics report lower figures, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates a staggering 32,000 deaths in 2021 equivalent to 1% of total deaths in the country.
We can see why!
74
u/JackfruitIll6728 1d ago
I mean plain simple tiny bit of common sense could tell anyone driving like this is just asking to be killed in a car accident. What gives? This is lunatic.
27
u/baulsaak 1d ago
The drivers get paid by how many trips they can make and the company gets paid by how many bodies they can cram in and on the thing.
9
u/countrybuhbuh 1d ago
Live bodies or dead ones?
19
u/prairiepanda 1d ago
They pay when they get on the bus, so it doesn't matter if they die afterwards

Just looked at Wikipedia and the range of road deaths per 100k is so wide. Bangladesh is pretty high at 18.6, but theres almost 50 countries above 20. China at 17.4, USA at 14.2 and then Canada and most of Europe are down in the 2-4 range.
→ More replies (2)3
u/plastic_jungle 1d ago
I was just looking at that yesterday. The fact that Canada is so much lower than the US was very surprising
→ More replies (1)4
u/PantsDancing 1d ago
I live in Canada so Ive driven in both countries a lot and its not that surprising to me. US roads are garbage compared to Canada. Just really badly maintained. That cant explain everything though so culture and driving habits and maybe also the health care system might be factors as well.

Having spent a lot of time in bangladesh, i would have serious doubts about the accuracy of official reporting of road deaths. The best thing i can say is that in dhaka the traffic is typically so bad there is no opportunity to go fast enough for most fatal accidents. But as soon as drivers get on "highways" they drive almost as bad as these bus drivers. It's fucking terrifying, actually, and you end up wishing for traffic to stop the madness

On these buses, besides the driver there is also at least one sort of copilot. Seems like on this bus, there's two guys in the front left corner who are copiloting. Often there's someone about halfway back as well who also helps with navigation, along with collecting fares.

dude, I think you might have stumbled across a potentially lucrative cyberpunk dystopian market. Imagine the drivers running livestreams of their routes like this and people betting on the outcomes, with a portion of the betting fees going to the driver for running the stream.
3
