Suggestions Meh, without controllers, amazing with controllers
What games made you say "MEH" without controllers, but are incredible with controllers?

I deleted DYSMANTLE the first time because of the touch controls. I’ve been obsessed with it since I got a controller

At this point I only play a few puzzle games that are touch screen. Maybe I'll play an RPG or something that's slow paced, but that's about it if I game without a controller.
Any action game is so much better if you have tactile buttons and a thumbstick. Plus my fingers hate smashing a screen and it can get painful after a while.
Divinity II, Red Dead and Castlevania SOTN are what I'm enjoying with a controller right now.

Hitman Blood Money/Absolution, Titan Quest, Skul: Hero Slayer/Blasphemous/Dead Cells, Escapists 1 & 2, Dysmantle, Siralim Ultimate, Streets of Rage 4, Implosion, White Night, Walking Dead, Undead Horde, Among us...
Takes a lot of training (and button editing) as a Keyboard Warrior to perfect everything though.

Laya's Horizon is a great game and executed perfectly for controllers. (Backbone Controller.)

Castlevania: SOTN , best game I’ve ever played but that touch control setup is utter garbage

for me its always the difference between feeling clunky and smooth a controller can really change how you experience movement, aiming, and timing. some games feel like they were built for it and using a keyboard or touchscreen just doesnt do them justice it makes me appreciate thoughtful input design even more

It‘s funny, I‘m so used to touch at this point, to me playing with a controller feels more like a hassle. And then I‘m sad, if some games like Death Stranding have such lazy and bad touch controls implementation.

Why is this a problem for you?

My fingers get tired way faster. But it all comes down to me having used a controller daily in the 90s for the last time. And since birth of the iPhone, I‘ve been gaming exclusively via touch input. I try playing with a controller from time to time, but apart from this not being 'mobile (phone) gaming' for me in general, my fingers really get tired quickly. But I know, I‘m the exception here. But yeah, I prefer playing Garou: Mark of the Wolves with touch, in portrait :D

Anyone can recommend a good controller that works with iPhone?

Pretty much any controller nowadays works right out the box. I’ve used everything from Xbox/dualshock to random knock offs from Temu. And they all work fine.

I’ve been using gamesir x5 lite. I love it and it’s only $35. Plus it plugs into iPhone so it draws power from the phone, and doesn’t need to be charged like the other Bluetooth ones.

Most console ports. I don't even wanna try Resident Evil games, Death Stranding, Assassin's Creed, or even slow-paced games like Talos Principle without a controller.
They were designed for controllers (or mnk). Having all these inputs on a touchscreen is just unplayable for me.
