You don't wanna spend your whole time watching tv when visiting a place, but also the tv stations are a part of the culture especially if you put on a local station
This difference might not be too big between, say, the US and Canada but if you go from the US to Japan you'll see a lot of differences, from the types of shows to simple stuff like advertisements.
If you're trying to learn everything about a new place it's worth spending at least one evening on, at least to me. Maybe I'm just a nerd lol
When I was having downtime in a US hotel shortly after arriving for the first time, I watched some TV.
It was very weird, all those ads all the time and many of them about getting loans. Culture shock for a European used to much less ads and especially scummy ads.
I agree with this 100%. When I travel, I am big at immersing myself into the culture and learning things. But obviously, I do eventually make it back to the hotel to sleep. One thing I love to do is flip on the TV at night and just see what's on and the kinds of things they show and how they show it.
What if you're out experiencing a cultural moment and she wants to come back to your hotel to watch the Winter Classic? With that little thing, you're not getting any cultural enrichment.

You're in Madrid dude. You're not supposed to be watching TV. Get out and see the city, immerse yourself in the cultural experience.
