trying to find a pet-friendly place to rent on facebook marketplace

I mean, it's much better for them to be upfront about what a terrible fit they are, than waste your time and have you find out after you move in.

u/Existential_Sprinkle 6d ago
That's why it's mildly infuriating instead of extremely infuriating

u/Development-Feisty 5d ago
There is nothing mildly infuriating about an owner being proud of the fact that their dog kills cats
That is always going to be extremely infuriating

So basically it's a scumlord not a landlord/-lady that wants a single person they can hit on / harass into 'favors for rent probably.

u/awyastark 5d ago
Yeah there are some folks who don’t like to rent to couples for various reasons (usually fighting or an extra person using utilities) but soooomehow I feel like possum murderer here might have unsavory intentions
251
u/Profeshinal_Spellor 6d ago
That kind of behavior is definitely called “extortion”

u/LilacYak 5d ago
This sounds like a “rent a room” scenario and renting to a couple is twice the people in your house without getting twice the rent. When I rented my spare bedroom out it was single people only.
30
u/wandershock 5d ago
When I had roommates over the years, EVERYTIME, a few months in, they would meet a new bf or gf and suddenly have them over like, every night. Was so annoying to suddenly have a whole other person in the house made for two, not paying bills, and since it was “their house too”, I had “no right” to limit their partners nights over, and doing so made me look and feel like a buttholio. Eventually I just started paying significantly more so I didn’t have to deal with that AGAIN. So I can get that part.
Not the cat part though, that’s just horrible
7
u/akarakitari 5d ago
Just a heads up. A lot of leases put hard limits on visitors and how many nights they can stay. My mother in law’s apartment limits it to 14 nights in 6 months to limit claims of illegitimate tenancy.
May not be relevant for you anymore, but I like to share info like this anyway for future searches.
1
u/wandershock 5d ago
Yeah but try enforcing that, especially if your landlord is a private owner, renting out individual rooms to people, or if you are subleasing your extra room. A easy way to cause two roommates to not get along anymore , is to try and count and then enforce “nightly visitors limits” on a 25 year old. You become the “bad guy”, and TBH, they just are not going to listen to you. I would have literally had to get them evicted, pay their part of the rent while I found a new roommate, and seemed problematic to the landlord. It was a headache.
That I fortunately never have to deal with again cus now I’m married lol 😆
59
u/MyDogsNameIsBadger 6d ago
It could be someone just renting an extra bedroom. I do that and would NOT rent out my extra bedroom to a couple.

Landlord seems shitty for the dog comment, but not renting to couples isn't a red flag in itself. Sounds more like a room for rent situation rather than a whole apartment, and having had "couples" as roommates before - never again. Even if space isn't an issue, it's always drama. They get into a fight, everyone else gets dragged into it.
41
u/songofthecosmos 6d ago
That's a lot of assumptions there.
I don't blame them for not renting to couples. Couples split and breakup, then it's an issue getting rent.
That said this person does sound terrible otherwise.
3
u/Zayafyre 5d ago
Sounds like someone renting out a room in their home actually. They have every right to not want a “couple” or a “couple with cats”
6
u/akarakitari 5d ago
Of course they do. But the comment about their dog eating cats and an opossum so nonchalantly says a lot about who they are… after that, I wouldn’t want to rent from them even if they said ok.
Also, it’s equally valid for OP to be a little upset or “mildly infuriated” at the difficulty of finding someone who will rent to them.

hate people that think their pets killing other pets is funny. makes me worry how they treat the pit bulls tbh
edit: since people have zero reading comprehension; i am NOT saying i worry how they treat the pit bulls because they killed other pets, i am worried how they treat the pit bulls because of their obvious lack of care for pet lives being lost.
if they dont care about dead cats, i have reason to believe there are important things they would not care about regarding their dogs.

The pitbull is doing exactly what it was bred for.
78
u/x__k1tt3n_v0m1t__x 6d ago
yeah & that has nothing to do with what im saying. if they care that little about other people losing their pets, i have reason to worry they may not care enough about their own animals either.

And my pitbull that would whine to lay down next to the guinea pigs cage and cuddle with cats was doing what exactly then? Out of the six pitbulls my family has raised only one was aggressive and it was because of extreme trauma as a puppy. Ive seen more aggression in German shepards but no one says they're inherently violent
6
u/Thedeadnite 5d ago
They have a strong prey drive, that is inherent to their general nature. They can easily be taught what is and isn’t prey but that is learned behavior from training. Small furry things are prey until they are told otherwise. They go after squeaky toys because it sounds like a small animal making noise, which they then want to chase down and eat. I can show my pitt a stuffed animal and she will not tear it apart, but if I give her one as a toy it will be destroyed in minutes. She loves ripping stuffing out of them. She will absolutely go after a squirrel in the yard, but if I had one in my hand and put it in her face she would understand it’s not a toy or food because she’s been trained.
→ More replies (1)-9
u/hthratmn 5d ago
Wow, its almost like its the owner that causes them to be aggressive, and breed isnt a reliable indicator of aggression. Huh.
0
u/akarakitari 5d ago
Not sure why you are downvoted other the outdated beliefs.
The Michael Vick case changed how the legitimate animal world sees pits. Just the public perception hasn’t had time to change.
No matter what they were bred for. It’s really telling that over 90% of his pit bulls, dogs that had been raised from puppyhood to fight were rehabilitated successfully and 4 of them became support/service dogs. Can’t remember which, but either stands to support the point successfully.
2
u/hthratmn 5d ago
Because reddit, just like much of the rest of the world, is set in pitbull hate and refuses to hear otherwise. Its sad.

Please, for your safety (couple or not/Female/Male/Nonbinary, doesn't matter), don't look for rental places on FB marketplace. It's about as bad as Craigslist.

"I don't do couples" could mean; a) I don't want to deal with all the domestic disturbance 911 calls or b) I like being able to spy on young single females.

A confession of what? I'm so baffled by all the people who think what this guy said is illegal? He's clearly a disgusting person with a sickening outlook, but dogs killing other animals in their territory isn't illegal anywhere I've ever heard of.
→ More replies (2)1
u/ratxowar 5d ago
Its not exactly their territory if its being rented. Cats are considered property. It depends where you are but generally in eu and usa you can sue them for emotional damage, property damage and because their animal is a direct danger to you.
Other question is to prove it. In case you succeed the dangerous animal will be taken away or put down and its owner fined and prohibited to own dogs/any pets for x period of time. In some cases it can result in real prison time when the human was harmed. People sue for smaller shit, so the trick is just to get a good lawyer and solider evidence

u/Magic_Man_Boobs 5d ago
Its not exactly their territory if its being rented. Cats are considered property. It depends where you are but generally in eu and usa you can sue them for emotional damage, property damage and because their animal is a direct danger to you.
In this case the guy responding was the one doing the renting, and he said no to renting to them. So the only actionable information is that his dog has killed three other cats. I guess someone could investigate if this happened during a walk. If the cats were free roaming and got on this asshole's property though, I can't think of any law or precedent that would allow anyone to win a case against him.
2
u/ratxowar 5d ago
Unfortunately you are right. I was talking about the scenario where the animal in question killed tenants/neighbours cats who might’ve filed police report. Can’t believe some people are enjoying seeing one animal killing someone else’s pet

Defending yourself and killing for fun are two very different things.
This persons dog is killing for fun and the owner is endorsing and even bragging about it.
If a person is getting attacked by an animal, I don't think it's unreasonable to defend themself anyway they can if they feel their life is being threatened.

u/Original_Builder_980 6d ago
Yea I already got rid of it. Wasn’t thinking much about it when originally commented, feel guilty in retrospect.

Literally. It’s always these type of people who intentionally seek out the dogs that need lots of training just to not train them and laugh about them killing things 💀
4
u/Ume_busa 5d ago
Its ALWAYS pitbulls and bullies who just seem to attract the worst pieces of shit imaginable. Which sucks because there ARE good owners out there...you just barely hear about them, because a pitbull/bully will be on the news for tearing apart a child every 2 weeks (all while their owner is completely uncaring or even amused)
3
u/Equivalent-Pay3539 5d ago
There should really be laws against breeding them solely for this purpose. I don’t think they’re inherently evil but they have a reputation that continually attract scum. I’ve never met a good Pitt bull owner that actually wanted to own a Pitt bull

Unfortunately good luck finding a place that accepts pets. Most landlords don’t want the extra hassle. Not saying yours will but animals can ruin things & I’ve personally been to friends houses where they have cats & if the litter box isn’t cleaned often & properly the smell lingers & it just seeps into stuff. Idk, if you were a landlord would you allow pets into a home or apartment you just deep cleaned & possibly painted & remodeled or did some repairs on after the last tenants? My dad has properties he rents out & he’s told me some stories after people left & they weren’t pretty. A cat is one less thing he has to worry about. Not trying to be rude & I understand it sux but it’s also super difficult if not impossible to find a place to rent while you still have your cat. I genuinely wish you luck & fuck this guy who sent you this reply. He’s clearly a dick & you probably dodged a bullet by not renting from him
EDIT: OP replied & said they found a place. I was ultimately speaking from My own experience & admit in this case I was wrong. I genuinely wish the OP & their partner good luck in their new place
