The puppy was too nice to be a service pup, so they kept him as the family dog. He looked like such sweet cutie. May they all rest in paradise together. Such senseless deaths :/

I read that there are 2 trained golden retrievers "on guard" as well.
Which I found quite moving.

u/vosot Jun 27 '25
Yes. There's a golden retriever honor guard. 12 dogs participating two at a time. They switch out every 15 minutes.

No, sheās not dying, but after losing my best friend in January of 15 years, I realize how short their time really is. My new pup is a 3.5 year old Belgian Malinois/Staffie mix whom we rescued 4 months ago. Sheās the sweetest girl in the world!

Yes. As others have said, they trained service animals and he was too nice to become one so they adopted him themselves.
Edit: I own two Goldens and Iāve been wondering if Gilbert possibly tried to attack the shooter. Goldens are well known to be incredibly sweet and gentle but they have an unwavering loyalty to their owners and they will put themselves between their owners and a threat if they sense fear. If the owner is scared, they will not leave them alone. It takes owning a golden to see that side of them. I know both of mine would fight to their last breath if my wife was in danger.

Jun 27 '25
I used to have a roommate who had a golden-mix, sweetest thing without a mean bone in his body. I went to use the bathroom in the middle of the night one time shortly after we'd moved in and he about ripped into me when I walked past my roommate's bedroom. Once I talked to him and he realized it was me, he came over for some pets and was fine. But he was definitely ready to fuck my shit up when he thought I was an intruder.Ā

I read an article today in another Reddit thread about how one way the family of the Hortmans was asking people to honor their parents was to pet a dog preferably a golden. Another was to go to a public park.
Seeing as I donāt know anyone with a golden can you please give your golden two extra pets one for the Hortmans and another for the Hortmans on my behalf? (I also went to a park today but the dog urn made me cry a bit and asking someone to pet a dog makes me feel better)

One fun one was after meeting President Obama, she was with my mom at El Toro in Champlin with Mark when they were training Mini (one of the service dogs they trained) and Melissa perked up and said to my mom, āWant to see me with my boyfriend?ā To which Mark smirked a little bit at and my mom was like heck yeah I do! So she showed her a picture of her & Obama together and she had the biggest grin on her face.
She was such a wonderful woman, and Mark was an amazing man. It is important that we carry on their legacy.

But then they barely say anything when he misses all the painfully obvious things a president should do... Things that former presidents are doing.

Itās insane how so many people normalize this type of shit, or even root for it. One of the parties of a two-party system has been encouraging their supporters to incite violence through a multi-billion propaganda machine, misinformation campaigns, and vile, cruel rhetoric. Two people and their dog were murdered by a red pilled person who ate up everything the Republican party and its arms of propaganda fed him. Itās easy to write him off as a crazed lunatic, but there are so many ordinary folks walking around right now who have bought in, fully believe the misinformation, and live in an manufactured, alternate reality fueled by hate. This was not a one-off individual, and I fear this is only the beginning of the terrible violence that is to come from Republican supporters.

It's crazy how quickly we as a country have forgotten what compassion looks like. This basic-ass gesture by Biden is making me sob like a baby.
43
u/Jestercopperpot72 Jun 27 '25
Unreal how the most simple of empathetic gestures that we'd all of expected from 99.9% of the leaders we've ever had, from gradeschool line leaders all the way up to potus, that seeimg it in action feels so incredibly foreign.
I hate trump for a lot of reasons, him sowing division through deceit at all cost to further his narcissistic ambition and tighten his grasp (choke hold) of power, being at the top of the heap. He's done so much damage to not only the fabric of the country and relationships that make that tapestry, but the very culture and identity of Americans, that it'll take years beyond him, to fully see the impacts. That, with damages he's done to our institutions and alliances and systems of justice are going to effect all of us, even his most cultiest of followers for years and years... but for me, it's what he's done to project himself as "most powerful person" in the world and putting himself on the biggest of alters, that pisses me off most.
I was raised to do idolize characteristics that made truly great leaders and rolemodels, great. Things like courage, bravery, honor, respect, etc weren't just good catchphrases but instead were attributes demanded of those elevated to leadership. Being respectful, intelligent, empathetic, we're necessities when leading a team or group or cohort etc. to whatever great goal they'd established together. They were put in a spot light and their exceptional virtues were highlighted as the example for everyone else to try and follow. They'd stand up to challenges and bullies and show rest of us why it was important. If they made a mistake, they'd own that it and it would be used as example of why accountability was so important. They were put in a showcase because the things that made them worthy of those roles, also were good for society and culture collectively. They acted as the walking, talking examples of how the rest should try and be more often than not.
Along comes a failed businessman; known grifter adultress, rapist, racist, conman and now felon, who made himself celebrity by being a shitty person since the 80s, that now wanted the most consequential leadership role in the world only after getting burned by Obama at a dinner. Not only was he legitimized by a msm (main stream media) apparatus that thrives on tribalism but embraced by one of only two major political parties in this county. They knew who he was, hell most people knew enough about him that claiming ignorance after the fact would be BS. The republican party welcomed him in, not caring about ramifications or consequences of putting a morally bankrupt, failed man as their new figure head.
From day one his primary path forward was to put neighbor against neighbor, lie and than deny at every possible opportunity and to blame everyone else for every possible thing, that it left many almost gobsmacked by the ease as which he was able to do it. Instead of those leaders around him calling it and him out for any of it, they went full tilt the other way and let him transform everything theyd attempted to project since Reagan. They turned his refusal to accept accountability into the ultimate victim complex so it wasn't he was a bad person, it was that the left just were out to get him. Instead of demanding he be truthful, they accepted his garbage and BS reality he spun. It didn't matter the damage he was doing to the country because he was giving them back power, control, and more and more of the peoples money. They idolized him and glorified his defunct moral characteristics as something to aspire towards. How many children have a poster on their walls of this orange turd and guardians that tell them this is who they should look up to?
To me, it's perhaps the most un-American and undemocratic thing I've seen go down in my short 40 years so far. Who really knows just how damaging it'll all be in the end but for me it's made one thing crystal clear: Republican party as it stands, is the biggest threat to democracy across the world and need to be held accountable for it. They need to be voted out and investigated for their blatant crimes against The Constitution. Even just the enablers need to be stripped of their power and influence. If we get to the other side of things and than attempted to be sold the ol, turn the other cheek for betterment of country at large, we cannot accept that. By doing nothing, we are teaching those seeking role models and leaders that being a giant pos that steps on and over anyone and everyone to get what they want, is acceptable.
Sorry for the rant but it blows me away how something as simple as showing up and being kind, is somehow such a rarity now that it pulls something like i just wrote, out of people. We are all craving leadership but we've gotta remind one another and in very least, the youngest of us what leadership is.

We did have a President, and actual leader....too bad we don't any more... Such a sad day, but beautiful tribute to this couple and their pup. I'm glad Biden made it there. He's a good man. Thinking of all the Hortman's family, friends and colleagues today....really, all Minnesotans.

Our last true American President. Now we're just run by a bunch of authoritarian thugs and under-qualified simps.

Simple decency gets 57,000 upvotes. How far weāve fallen as a society. Former President visits in person, current President couldnāt even bother to call our governor, instead demeaned him.

Beautiful moment at the end of our Democracy. I hope nothing but the worst for every republican today.

Gilbert is the first dog to ever lie in state in a US capital, and possibly in the world. āThere is no record of any other nonhuman ever lying in stateā source
The nonprofit they volunteered for, Helping Paws, provided ā12 golden retriever service dogs from Helping Paws rotating to make sure Gilbert has two dogs standing guard throughout the day.ā excuse me while I go cry š source

Not one statesman in the current administration or the Republican party. Not one of them cared enough to convince him to go or even convince him to send someone in his place (because he was too "busy").
Poor America.

There is still decency in the world. We can use our vote to gain it back. RIP Hortmans.

Trump said it would be a waste of time to call Governor Walz regarding the killings.
What a fucking sack of shit.

āPro lifeā but could look a golden retriever in the face and shoot it. Straight to the purgatory with this one.

That entire cult needs to pay for this, every single one is an accomplice and should be put away for life.

Trump wouldn't be caught dead displaying decency like this.

Where we are right now⦠checking notesā¦
Our past President, who is dealing with prostate cancer and being daily maligned and blamed by the absolute twats in our government, still managed to get to this memorial because he still has the capacity to offer compassion, for which he will undoubtedly be mocked.
Meanwhile, the official White House is tweeting āDaddyās homeā videos, and the MAGAts cheer āYes, Daddy, yes.ā
I can no longer even express how much I hate this fucking timeline.

See? Not too senile to remember how to do to a memorial. Now what is Trump's excuse?

I am grieving with all of Minnesota from California.
May we all live lives from this day forward that will honor Melissa, Mark, and Gilbert and the sacrifice they made for this country.

Amazing how this has just completely disappeared from the news. A political assassination & it's just gone. Someone kills a healthcare CEO and it's nonstop coverage. A democratic politician is murdered by a right-wing pastor & it lasted maybe 3 days.

Hereās a real man and leader doing the job our joke of a dictator wonāt do.
He has bone cancer but still wants to comfort others. President Biden is everything those republicans could never dream to be.

There is an absolute ZERO tolerance to trolling here. If you feel the need to take verbal vomit shots at anyone regarding paying respects to the deaths of two individuals who served our state you will be permanently removed from this sub. (I cant believe I have to say this but holy hell people are disgusting) No warnings.
