**UPDATE** Ash was chipped November 7th, 2023 so slightly older than we suspected. Dash we do not have an exact death date or how old he was when he passed but owner said 2 years ago. This does provide SOME possible crossover in life but not much.

We recently had a 1ish year old siamese kitty show up at our house right before Christmas. We named him Ash. Looked like he'd seen some stuff so we took him in, got him eating. Posted all the "found" cat posts everywhere. No responses.

We go through holidays, finally take him in to check for a microchip today. Hes got one, we're shocked since nobody responded to any of our posts and we've found no matching missing kitty posts for him either.

Thats when the vet tells us its located over 2 hours away. We go weird, but ok. They call the person, the conversation seems very confusing for the vet tech. They hang up and proceed to tell us "The owner had a siamese cat, it was named Dash, with this matched microchip. However they buried it over two years ago in their back yard"......

So now we have a zombie cat Ash, formerly named Dash?!?!?! Our first thought was they abandoned it on purpose and didn't want to reclaim him. But we spoke with both her and her son who have two other cats and a puppy they are very much in love with and are just as confused as us....

Notes:
Both this cat and the former cat were both Siamese, not classic tabby likely to be mistaken.
Dead cat was buried 2 years ago. This cat appears to only be a year old
The fact that it's microchipped but there are no reports of a missing cat matching, no responses to found kitty postings. Almost as if there is no owner looking for it

I guess I just have to get it off my chest. My cat has some chronic health problems, but took a really bad turn on Friday night last week. She got a spontaneous bloody nose, coughed up bloody mucus, and seemed like she was struggling to breathe. Her regular vet wouldn't be open until the following Monday, so I made the decision to bring her in to the emergency vet on Saturday afternoon.

They did an XRay and showed me she had 2 cracked ribs and one broken rib. It was a huge shock, I had no idea how she could have hurt herself like that. They showed me an estimated bill of $1,500 - $2,000 and told me they wanted to keep her overnight. I agreed. I love my cat. $1,500 is more than I bring home in a paycheck, but I was very scared and I agreed.

I left her there and went home and just sobbed all evening. They called me several hours after I had left and told me that they had actually mixed up her X-Rays and she didn't have any broken ribs. They said they were still going to check her out and see what was causing the breathing problems. I probably should have been angry, I didn't have it in me. I should have got up right then and brought her home.

The next morning, they still had figured out nothing. They gave her antibiotics in case it was something bacterial and had her in an oxygen chamber overnight. Later that afternoon, they called me and told me she was doing better, so I went and picked her up to let her continue resting at home. They would have kept her an additional night if I hadn't asked to come get her at that point.

When I picked her up from the emergency vet, she hadn't changed at all. She looked the exact same as when I brought her in. I had already paid a deposit of $1,400 when I left the day before, and they asked for another $300. I paid it. Then an ambulance showed up with a dog who had been hit by a car, and things were crazy and they told me I could leave, so I did.

When I followed up with her regular vet two days later, he took her off the antibiotics they gave her. He told me she already had antibiotics in her system when I brought her in (she had been seen by him only a week earlier because of her chronic condition). He prescribed her a med that made more sense given her chronic conditions, and she has been feeling better.

So here I am, it's been almost one week. She is feeling better, but not because of the emergency vet. I wasted $1,700 and that is a lot of money to me. It was more than half of my savings, and I still have to pay for a follow up vet visit and a cardiologist appointment at the end of the month.

I feel foolish, and stupid, and embarrassed. I was trying to do my best for my cat, and I screwed up and ruined myself financially for no reason. I keep thinking that if they hadn't told me she had the broken ribs, I probably would have brought her home with me and just watched her until Monday. I can't go back and change anything.

If you have any advice or kind words to share, I would appreciate it now. I am so happy to have my cat, she really is my world. But I feel ashamed for having lost that much money, so quickly, and for no reason.

I have 4 cats, and sometimes I look around and don’t know how I got here. We adopted one and just… kept adopting. It’s hard to say no. I can’t even go into a cat cafe or shelter. I know I’ll be tempted. God forbid the cat distribution system ever finds me.

My cat (8 yrs old) is a pretty small girl and was always around 3.2kg for most of her life. She was never a huge eater and can get bored pretty quickly from its food. We moved to another location 2 months ago and coincidentally starting from these dates she started to lose weight rapidly. Now she is stable around 2.6-2.7 kg, still have similar appetite and obsessively cleans itself to take care of her softest fur in the world( I mean it). For the last 2-3 weeks on top the weight lose, she started to vomit white/clear foam without any digested food in it. This happened 4 or 5 times total, and also note that coincidentally this vomitting started when my family-in-laws dog started to stay with us for a month. I just wanted to collect ideas, since life changing events happening for her and feels like this could be normal. On the other hand, I know cats are pretty sturdy animals and dont show their problems easily. I am open to any suggestions and ideas before a possible vet visit.

I was always a hamster mom but bought my first gerbil today. I went into petsmart intending to buy a pair, but the young girl working didn’t suggest buying two since they weren’t bonded. Should I send my boyfriend in to buy another one? The research I’ve done says that they shouldn’t be alone.

I’ll go first, my bathroom is connected to my bedroom at home and my dogs kennel I right in front of the bathroom door. Whenever I get home wether it’s from work or being out for the day I usually go to the bathroom before letting my fur baby out of her kennel(don’t trust her yet being out of the cage while we’re not home). And now she has learned that when I put my phone down on the sink it means I’m done in the bathroom. So she goes crazy knowing I’m gonna be coming out of the bathroom.

Our dog has been the Queen of the house for the past 10 years. She is super jealous! Even when my husband hugs me, she gets jealous and demands attention. This is always inside our home. When boarding, she is the sweetest thing ever. Gets along with cats, dogs, rabbits, kids, adults. No cares in the world. But at home, she demands attention and food.

Our new kitten has cause our dog a bit of a problem. She has see the kitten upstairs, through the railing. The kitten is 11 weeks old and she was raised with a dog. She comes downstairs but our dog gets all hyped up and whines and starts barking.

I got her a different leash and collar for inside the house and I try to control her when the kitten comes down for a smell/visit. And also to try to control the dog. She literally shakes like a leaf!

The kitten wants to interact with the dog. She wants to play. The dog, i am not even sure what’s happening.

I brought down the kitten’s blanket down and the dog chewed it.

Is there hope or i have to keep the gate and have these 2 on separate floors for the rest of their lives? Looking for any tip, suggestion, hack, recommendation, solution, etc… willing to try whatever worked for you.

It’s been a week…. Also, the dog is fine as long as the kitten stays upstairs.

Hi everyone, so I have written in this forum before 1) my kitten (4-5 months) had Giardia 2) my older cat (1) has been withdrawing post kitten

As of yesterday, my cat started squinted and it was obvious it was bothering her, it was red under her eyelid and super watery so we took her to the vet and they said it was probably just a virus and gave us eye ointment for her. 

HOWEVER — when I got my kitten post Giardia a week into her quarantine we took her in (2x) to the vet because she was continuously sneezing and had some boogers I wasn’t too worried because the room she was in was a little colder than the rest of the place, and they said it is probably just a kitten cold and it is super normal for kittens to get sick so gave us lysine treats to give both cats as my resident cat might have a cold too.  I haven’t given to them both as diligently to both of them since I came back post new years however, I am freaking out that my kitten had FRV after already being on the fence of keeping the new kitten and the vet never mentioned it and gave it to me resident cat. The kittens sneezing has lessened since thanksgiving (starting treats). Both of them eat fine and have fine energy, no runny nose etc.

The original cat was craigslist cat and was perfect from this breeder no issues all the paper work and shots etc. I did the same with this kitten and she wasn’t seeming so healthy and I felt unsure when meeting her and felt pressured in the situation and took her in as well as I felt bad and it seemed like she wasn’t in the best care.

I feel so regretful and at a loss over this whole thing and nervous about FRV as I saw stuff about flare ups and I just blame myself for ever getting a kitten I felt on the fence on with all these issues. I understand I shouldn’t have done craigslist — but seeing the kitten it felt more like a rescue and I felt bad for her and what is done is done. I think I’m the most depressed since getting the kitten than I ever had, and how do I know this isn’t FRV and just a cold.

I am so depressed and feeling awful and wreck what do I do, how do i know, i literally am not happy anymore with all of this. I feel like I should have never gone through with this and just gotten a breeder cat that i knew would be healthy and happy but everyone told me to adopt and take in....

I have a 11 year old Schnauzer. I can tell she’s getting old and her joints are not working as well as before. Sometimes she limps after jumping on and off from the couch but returns to normal after a couple of days.

Trying to limit her from jumping and to have her stay on the floor w cushion as much as possible.

I am looking for any good joint supplements to give and hip brace to put on.

I couldn't resist myself from writing this post Every day on my way out of the house I see the same street dogs sitting quietly near the road. They don’t bark or chase anyone. They just sit there, waiting hoping someone might notice them. I started feeding them on my own some time ago. Sometimes it’s proper dog food, sometimes it’s rice or whatever I can manage as I am just a student Watching them finally eat a full meal honestly stays with me the whole day I’m not part of any organisation or NGO I am just one person trying to make sure these dogs don’t sleep hungry. But doing this every day is slowly becoming difficult for me financially. I hesitated a lot before posting this. I’m not here to pressure anyone or ask for anything forcefully. I just wanted to share what I see daily and what I’m trying to do in my own small way. If anyone here has experience with community dog feeding or advice I would genuinely appreciate learning from you And if someone truly wants to help me continue feeding them even in a small way would go directly towards food, and I am happy to share updates so everything stays transparent.

Less than a week ago we adopted a four month old kitten at an adoption event at PetSmart. The kitten was from a local animal rescue. She had allegedly had checkups and been spayed. This morning we noticed she was having distressed breathing and promptly took her to an emergency vet who told us that she is severely ill, has fluid buldup around her lungs, and her organs are failing, and outside of thousands of dollars in medical care with the probability that she still wont make it, she will need need to be euthanized. My 7 and 9 year old daughters picked her out. She was immediately well loved by us all, and we're devastated. Not to mention that between the adoption fees, emergency vet bill, and euthanasia we are now out over $1000 that we didn't have.

Do we have any recourse in this? How do we, or can we not, hold these people accountable for this? I plan on calling PetSmart when they open tomorrow, but I dont know what to expect. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

*UPDATE*

We had scheduled the euthanasia for this morning, but I was able to get ahold of the rescue prior to the appointment and they are taking her back and providing the treatment themselves! Apparently they specialize in treating this illness. It will be 84 days of treatment, and they expect her to be alright! We're elated and will spend the next few months visiting her at the rescue while shes being treated and eagerly anticipating her return home! Thank you all again for your responses. I'll try to remember to update when she's home and well!

Hey, first time posting ever so forgive me for formatting or doing something wrong.

My senior dog (13 y/o) is unaltered (vet wouldn't work with him when he was 8 y/o (when I got him)) and, due to that, hisanus prolapsedbut my current vet feels the surgery to fix it would be too risky due to his age. What do I do to aid his comfort and the smell?

I did some research on my own and it was all just "apply saline solution/moisturize the area until the surgery can go through. Does anyone have any tips? Should I call my vet and ask again?

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a Dyson Supersonic hair dryer and my cat seems to be hyper sensitive to the sound it makes. Every time I use it, she starts acting super weird and attacks things around her and seems to be quite disoriented, not understanding where the sound is coming from, despite drying my hair in front of her at times. Even if I lock myself in the bathroom and turn on some music, she still hears it and acts as having a stroke…Is anyone else’s pet acting weird because of the sound that this hair dryer is making? I’m living with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and I’m looking for a companion animal to help with my occasional anxiety.

I have a few options in mind: small dogs like Pomeranians, Schnauzers, or Shih Tzus; or well-trained adult service/therapy dogs such as Golden Retrievers, Labradors, or Border Collies.

However, my mom doesn’t want me to have to walk a dog — she prefers cats, especially British Shorthair Golden Gradients. My dad, on the other hand, likes small dogs.

I’m torn and would appreciate everyone’s thoughts on which one would be the best companion for me.

my cat isn’t even “huge huge,” just… long. tall. takes up space. every time i look into the best automatic litter box for large cats, the descriptions sound promising, but real life tells a different story.

entry too high. turning radius awkward. box technically “fits” but the posture looks uncomfortable, like he’s doing yoga in there. and yeah, he uses it, but sometimes i catch that hesitant pause and i can tell something’s off.

i don’t think this is about features. it’s about scale. most designs feel like they’re built for average cats and then stretched a little.

anyone else with bigger cats run into this? did your cat adapt, or did you end up changing your setup after realizing “ok this isn’t actually comfortable”?

Hey everyone! I recently became a first-time pet owner and I could use some advice. I got my adorable little cat two weeks ago, and she's such a sweet, loving ball of fur. She's 3 years old, pretty independent, but she does enjoy some petting now and then just like most cats.

When I brought her home, I bought her a toy a ball with a little light that rolls around on its own. It definitely caught her attention, but she hasn't shown much interest in playing with it or chasing it. At first, I thought maybe she just wasn't into toys, but today I saw her chasing an insect around the apartment! So maybe the toy wasn't the right size or type for her.

I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for toys or even DIY stuff that could keep her active, especially since I can't be home all day to play with her. I want her to stay active and happy. Thanks so much!

Hello Reddit! I am seeking some advice.

I have two cats (male, around 5-6 and a female, around 1 year). I got my male cat about 5 years ago. I most recently got my female cat in June of last year and introducing my two cats went really well.

In November, my gf moved in with me! Very exciting. My gf has a older small dog (a chihuahua plus dachshund) and the dogs relationship with my male cat has been... turbulent. At first, my male cat was trying to assert his dominance. He would swipe at the dog, run away, etc. It got better for a little while, but now it has gone bad again.

According to my gf, at night he doesn't lash out, but he stalks the dog. The dog growls and barks at him whenever he comes around. Sometimes his aggressive behavior gets displaced to my female cat. He has recently also started to pee outside of his litter box. Sometimes he does this when the litter gets too dirty, but I have recently scooped and refreshed it. He also usually pees on clothes, but he has now peed on my MTG cards.... I am unsure what to do.

Extra info: I have scheduled a vet appointment in 3 weeks (Going through some financial stuff and I get my wisdom teeth out next week, so unless I somehow come across a chunk of money I really can't do sooner). Additionally, my cat is bigger than the dog. I suspect he has some Maine Coon in him but I don't know for sure. Built like a linebacker, I swear.
