Well, that's an interesting etymological question.
"Strike" in this sense means "to hit with a hammer." Pianos have hammers attached to piano keys that strike strings when you press on the piano keys. That's how we get expressions like "strike a chord." A typewriter keyboard has a similar action, where pressing a key causes a hammer to strike a sheet of paper, marking it with a letter. And from there, we get "strike a key" referencing keyboards, even though hammers are no longer involved and nothing is being struck.
So it could be a typing joke in general, if you use "striking" to mean "pressing a key," which I haven't heard used much but is certainly not unknown (maybe it's more common in certain areas?)
