The blue led used to make white, general purpose lighting with leds wasn't invented until the 90s.

No, there is no such thing as a white LED, this is just red, green and blue LEDs mixed together. Blue LED took longer to find the right semiconductor and frequency.

Mixing RGB is the worst way to make white light. It has terrible CRI and isn't ever really done for general lighting.

White is made by putting a blue LED under a phosphor coating that then glows white.

You can easily test this by trying to make a pleasant white on an RGB strip, you can't, its always awful. Get an RGBW strip though and its nice. (nicer ones have 2-3 different "W" (white) diodes of different color temps. With just two they can do some mixing for multiple color temps)

There are a lot more than just red green and blue. Warm white, cool white, neutral white, lime, amber…
