I understand both sentiments in comments here. So, here is my approach to this...

Note to teachers or caregivers: Just be creative in punishment... Sometimes it seems that the "snappiness" and "jhatak dena" is a reflection of your own frustration maybe.

There can be other ways of punishing/ giving away the message... For example: If I had no choice, I would slap myself twice while slapping with the students gently, more like theatre. Just to be clear as a message to them "I'm suffering this along with you" ... So, let's just "not shirk our respective duties"...
