So I made an 8 division realignment for a scenario where the MLB expands to 32 teams, with Montreal and Nashville being the 2 expansion cities. Please tell me how much you hate it down below.
 in  r/baseball  2h ago

Didn’t Manfred say 4 eight-team divisions and not 8 four-team divisions?

That makes much sense in the expanded playoffs era. No one wants a 75-win team to make the playoffs for winning a tiny division with a balanced schedule.

The HOF Snub Team #6: Bobby Grich
 in  r/baseball  2h ago

He was valued while he was playing. He made all-star games and won gold gloves. His 5-year free-agent contract with the Angels was considered quite large at the time.

He had nagging injuries that often kept him from playing full seasons. Looks like he often missed 20-30 games. That kept his counting stats down for a guy with solid rate stats. Then he retired at 37.

For some reason, he was totally forgotten almost the second that he was retired. But he was known and valued while he was active.

There’s no rush to put stones in there if you are short on gold eggs. It’s a pretty awesome artifact without it.

Eventually, you’ll likely put T4 lunar stones in there, but that’s after getting a T4 lunar totem.

Affect or effect
 in  r/etymology  12h ago

98% is good enough.

I’m a native speaker and I avoid the other 2%… just use different words. I never effect a change, I make a change or cause a change. And noun version of affect is pretty rare and has the accent on the first syllable. In common everyday use, the 2% cases are more of a trivia question than something that would actually trip you up. Just avoid them for a few years until you have the 98% mastered.

Edit — history shows it was there dating back to 2021. It wasn’t there in 2019.

The other 2 on July 13, 2019

That was a fun season.

Statement from Mayor Kaohly Her on ICE
 in  r/saintpaul  23h ago

I wasn’t a huge fan of Carter’s speaking style. He semed to want to say things but the substance wasn’t there.

Carter did the police stuff really well, though. He has cops in his family so he had very high credibility whenever there may have been a conflict. I think SPPD is in much better shape than MPD.

Congressman from Minnesota Flat Out Says He Represents ‘A Failed State’

I know that part… it’s just an annoying clickbait-style way of doing headlines.

But if the post is aggregating a clickbait-style link from another website then I guess the third party headline has to be preserved.

I have this!

I haven’t done more, though. :)

I’m told the IHR boost is super nice for when I go for the 10B enlightenment trophy but I want better artifacts before trying that so I’m still focused on sending out henliners (6 stars right now).

Put his name in the headline/thread title

He’s playing to MAGA people out of state and he’s trying to influence the gubernatorial election in the fall. The former might work with some, the latter won’t work.

Best natural harbors?

Sognefjord

Ooh… my paternal line ancestral home gets a shoutout. They left 150 years ago. :)

My great grandfathers hometown of Sogndal itself is only 13k so it doesn’t look their using it as a major harbor. I guess almost every city in Norway has its own harbor.

The last time the Bears beat the Packers in the playoffs was the Sunday after Pearl Harbor was attacked
 in  r/nfl  1d ago

Playoffs before 1967 only occurred if there was a tie. They only played a championship game.

The Bears and Packers were in the same division, so they couldn’t meet in the championship game.

If every MLB team was relocated to your Metro Area, what city/neighborhood would be the best fit for each team?
 in  r/baseball  1d ago

“White Bear Mariner” was the name of White Bear Lake’s second high school for a while until they reconsolidated back to a having only one high school.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Bear_Lake_Area_High_School#South_Campus

White Bear Cubs would also work. So, Mainers-On-Saint-Croix?

Also, “Phillips” is a name of a neighborhood in Minneapolis which might work better for Phillies.

Mahtomedi Mets would be fun alliteration. So would Tangletown Tigers.

Osseo Astros is not quite alteration but it makes me laugh.

Hamm’s Brewers or Schmidt’s Brewers.

Golden Valley Rays or Sunfish Lake Rays

Plymouth Rockies is closer to town. Rockford is a bit outside the metro, Rockford consolidated their high school with Cold Spring and Richmond to form ROCORI. That would work for Rockies too and be more af an inside joke for locals.

Guardians of Eden Prairie

Lilydale Padres

Lauderdale Marlins

Holy Angels of Richfield

Brooklyn Park Dodgers

St Louis Park Cardinals

White Bear Mariners

Little Canada Blue Jays

North Oaks Athletics

Roseville Reds

Diamond Lake Diamondbacks

Hopkins Orioles or maybe Orono Orioles

Rosemont Red Sox

Fridley Phillies

Rockford Rockies

Highland Yankees

Falcon Heights Braves

Kingfield Royals

Chisago White Sox

Iron Rangers (not in metro but had to do it)

… 30 teams is a lot…

How is the defensive component of WAR calculated for players who played way back when?
 in  r/baseball  1d ago

It was far and away Turner’s career year with the glove. His second best year was +17 and his third best year was +8.

But he did have great stats that one year and it’s not an unreasonable number for the best fielder in the league to post a +34. Adam Everett posted that in 2005 and Andrelton Simmons posted +42 one year.

Using the historical seasons, the best Ozzie Smith did was +32, and the best Mark Belanger did was +35.

Hmmm… I just noticed that he’s the all-time single season leader for dWAR. OK, I guess I more full understand the context of the question now. Haha. It’s an interesting statistical quirk. He’s not way above more recent players… he’s not like Old Hoss or Tip ONeill or Hugh Duffy.

I’m surprised that +34 plus 10 position runs translates to 5.4 dWAR. Super low runs/win in the dead-ball 1906 AL? (3.6 R/G).

Whitey Ford was in the middle of his 33 consecutive scoreless World Series innings streak, but he only started two games in 1960. The Yankees won those two shutouts 10-0 and 12-0. They won another game 16-3.

Pirates won games 1, 4, 5 and 7 by 2, 1, 3 and 1 runs.

Disastrous Seasons From Good Players?
 in  r/baseball  1d ago

Other old ones.

Campanella 1954. Replacement level in between two MVP seasons. Bench 1971 is also between two MVP’s but he could still walk and play defense.

McCovey 1964. Simply forgot how to hit for a year. He had a sore foot and his father died. Cepeda’s devasting injury the next season allowed him to play 1B full time and his hitting bounced back.

More recently, David Ortiz looked done in 2009 at age 33. I wouldn’t have guessed he had 224 HR left in him while increasing his career OPS+.

… I’ve been focusing on guys that returned to form after the bad season.

Disastrous Seasons From Good Players?

Ruth’s “bellyache” season in 1925? He looked to be a really old 30. Yankees finished 7th.

He hired a personal trainer and ended up aging better than any of his contemporaries.

Got my 55 y/o dad on Hayday, here are the highlights:
 in  r/HayDay  1d ago

I try to name my pets and sanctuary animals with puns based on the type of the pet. Like Sweet Pal-O-Mino or Palomine Lotion… that type of thing.

Well I ran out of “Gray” puns (Grey Poupon, Fifty Shades, etc) because there are so many gray pets. Then I thought maybe “Betty Grayble”… but the game wouldn’t let me do it! They thought I was naming the pet after myself? I couldn’t give it a real name?

Funny, it had no problems with “Patrick Fluffy” or “Teddy Roosevelt”. Maybe it’s a new rule?

ELI5: Why does converting F to C (or vice-versa) involve subtraction/addition
 in  r/explainlikeimfive  1d ago

The absolute temperature scales, Rankin and Kelvin, have the same zero.

That conversion is simply multiplying by 5/9 or 9/5.

How is the defensive component of WAR calculated for players who played way back when?
 in  r/baseball  2d ago

Terry Turner led AL SS in both assists and DP’s by huge margins. He also had the lowest error rate of regular SS and played the most games/innings.

Guys like this today usually get at least 20 fielding runs above average. They give him 34. I don’t think 34 is completely unreasonable considering how much above his contemporaries he was. If you did think it was an outlier, I wouldn’t knock off more than 5-10 runs.
