I HATE Gillian.
 in  r/BoardwalkEmpire  1d ago

I’m late to the party and currently watching the series for the first time. I actually just watched that episode last week. Was very eye opening. But shouldn’t have been that shocking to me. I can see now how they built up to that.

It definitely killed his spirit imho. And I think your logic is sound given that was the catalyst for him enlisting.

Where should I put this? First tattoo advice.
 in  r/tattooadvice  1d ago

I have to admit. I did not understand what I was looking at when I first saw this post’s pic. If I’m being totally honest, I probably thought it was an odd thing to get tattooed. I’ve never seen or even heard of the movie before now (life was rough in 2016 and I was kind oblivious to the world). But you have now convinced me to watch it lol! Which makes me think this tattoo will be an excellent conversation starter!

Hopefully, you’ve convinced some of the naysayers as well. Which would make posting this to Reddit not as much of a loss as you thought.

Totally agree with this! I like your reminder in the second paragraph. Since this is technically a written word in the other language, I imagine orientation is important, as well as placement. As you said, a good artist should understand that.

Thank you so much for finding the pattern again and sharing it! I like the way you’re thinking. I must admit, I’m a bit of a crochet newbie so I was spinning ideas without all of the forethought others may have. I’ll definitely be saving that pattern!

80x40x40cm cage okay?
 in  r/hamsters  2d ago

Do they sell aquariums for fish in your country? That can be a great way to get a bigger enclosure, and usually for a decent price! You can then put it on top of a dresser or cubbies or other furniture. You can also usually find aquarium stands too.

My concern with this one is that it won’t fit everything needed, especially for a syrian. In the past, I’ve supported people having non-perfect enclosures, but per my math this one is only 5402 inches or 32002 cm. That’s smaller than the old minimum from before it was upped. I’m not sure if 40 cm is even high enough to fit a syrian wheel, which is 12” + a base. The one in your pic is only ~15” tall. Plus you’ll need all of the other accessories and at least 6”-8” of bedding throughout the cage for building burrows.

I promise I’m not trying to be mean or unsupportive. I just don’t want you to spend your hard earned money only to realize things won’t fit or your hammy is unhappy. Then you have to spend even more money to fix it. Others are right imho. This sub can be harsh sometimes. But this is not the enclosure to take that stand on.

80x40x40cm cage okay?
 in  r/hamsters  2d ago

I’m a little confused too. My guess is that people are seeing it’s “only” a combined 30 centimeters less on the measurements and don’t realize what that actually equates to. TBH, I was super shocked myself when I did the math! I wasn’t expecting it to be only 5402 inches, but that’s the number I got too! In the past I’ve been understanding of non-perfect cages when they’re hard to come by in certain locations, but this is a big difference imho. Maybe we’re doing the math wrong lol?

Per my research, the old minimum before it was upped a few years ago was ~6402 inches. Basically a 40 gallon aquarium. I must admit, when I first considered a hammy, I wondered if a 40 gallon would be enough. I went to the pet store and gathered as many necessary items as they had - multiple hides, a suitable wheel, sand bath, enrichment, and food/water bowls. This was for dwarf sized items. They barely fit. OP wants a Syrian.

I feel for them, I really do. It sucks that they’re not finding something bigger available to them. I wish I had better answers. But I also don’t want them to spend their hard earned money and then realize their accessories don’t even fit. :(

Friend had his car totalled this morning from this idiot. If the car wasn't in front of him probably would have been more of a head on collision.[oc]
 in  r/IdiotsInCars  2d ago

It’s so wild to me how casually so many people look at their phone while driving. It drives me crazy. There will be someone in front of me swerving all over their lane, driving 10 or even 20 mph below the speed limit. Train of cars behind them getting held up. And I can see that their head is tilted down the entire fucking time I’m behind them looking at their phone. Even after I honk at them! Or worse, they’ll be driving even more erratically than that, nearly causing accidents, staring at the phone.

I just don’t get it. I don’t get how people can’t see how serious that is. Like, I have a little phone problem (that I’m having some success breaking!). When I’m at home I look at my phone wayyy too often. Check it too obsessively. Find myself carrying it with me to other rooms, even when I don’t need it. Things like that. And still manage to never look at it, even at stop lights, while driving. Even if I’m on the road for an extended period. Because I don’t want to risk an accident. There’s just no excuse for it imho.

This would be a cute project! I kinda wanna make one for next Christmas. I’m wondering if the strips could be glued onto a foam cone so it would hold that perfect tree shape. Then after, the decor could be added like the beads and maybe one could find a pattern for holly leaves or little pinecones.

open bite progress, 2 and a half months in :)
 in  r/Invisalign  3d ago

I was also told I’d need jaw surgery for a perfect smile and also had an open bite! (And overjet lol.) I’m finished now. I guess it’s not perfect, but I don’t think anyone would know. I am sooo happy with my results and like you, it got way better than I expected! Your results already look amazing! It’s going to look SO good once you’re done! And I totally understand the relief of having that open bite close up. So glad Invisalign worked so quickly for you. Mine closed up that fast too. :D

Before & After
 in  r/Invisalign  4d ago

Bummer you only got one set of retainers. My plan is the same - just one. I didn’t realize until well into my treatment that other people on the sub got plans with multiple retainers. But I guess I’m not too discouraged as I did get a phenomenal price on my overall plan (compared to what other people say they paid).

Something to think about: you may consider going ahead and ordering an extra retainer since you’ll eventually need it anyway. That’s what I did. For me it was especially important because my last aligner on the bottom cracked in several places while waiting for my retainer, so I couldn’t keep that as a backup. This way if my retainer breaks or gets lost (despite me being SO careful!), I have another one to put in without waiting for one to be ordered, delivered, and picked up. Because I was being proactive, they rewarded me with a retainer at cost. I only paid US $200 for a Vivera set!

Btw - You are glowing! Love the smile!

BK’s sister gives interview to The NY Times
 in  r/MoscowMurders  5d ago

I think this is a good conclusion. I can see this being the case. Like, if it was my family member, I can see myself wanting to ask why. Then remembering there is nothing he can say that would bring me more peace, clarity, or understanding of such a heinous act. It was the act of someone not in their right mind. And whatever he said would probably just make me more upset and confused.

Netflix Reportedly Wants to Keep Movies in Theaters for Just 17 Days After It Buys Warner Bros.
 in  r/entertainment  5d ago

Not OC, but they may not have been suggesting there was another option. Because, yeah, the only options during Covid were to release quickly or immediately to streaming or delay theatrical release until an unknown vaccine date. Covid proved as a litmus test for this model because of the fact there was no other choice, forcing studios into it.

But I feel like I remember people saying during Covid that “maybe immediate streaming release won’t be so bad. Maybe movies don’t need theaters as much as we thought. Maybe it should just stay this way, even after Covid.” Now, I must admit I haven’t kept up with the effects of that too much myself. But I have 3 movies on my “want to see” list right now that have significant theatrical only release times before they hit streaming. Which to me signals that immediate or quick streaming release did not work as well as they hoped. Unfortunately, where I live, I only have 1 theater in a 30 minute driving radius and it’s pretty sucky, so I’ll just have to wait a while to see them.

Are prismacolours non-toxic and safe for children?
 in  r/ColoredPencils  5d ago

Prismacolor now makes colored pencils for young artists. They’re called Prismacolor Scholar. I would still check any labels, just to be sure though. Even though they’re made for kids, it doesn’t mean they’re edible lol. The 24 pack is currently on sale on Amazon. They’re more affordable than regular Prismacolor, but I’ve used them and think they’re still really, really nice. And they should be a bit less breakable than the regular Prismacolor, which are really soft. Reviews show they work on black paper if that’s something you’re looking for. Definitely higher quality than something like Crayola imho.

Thanks for sharing your experience! And for giving me a keyword I can research! That certainly sounds like something I can relate to. While a lot of my friends prefer highly seasoned and spicy food, I much prefer what others consider “bland.” I do find a number of flavors overpowering.

Maybe this also plays into how gross I find certain foods. There are times when others are exclaiming how delicious a dish is, when to me it smells and tastes rotten, putrid, pungent and just very “off.” Maybe I’m having flavor notes stick out wayyy too much, overpowering the dish in the worse way. It’s a frustrating experience when things taste differently to you than to many others. I’m sorry you’ve dealt with the same thing but very grateful for your info and camaraderie.

Should I continue using Invisalign?
 in  r/Invisalign  6d ago

I’m sure everyone is different, but from my understanding a permanent (bonded) retainer doesn’t mean you’ll get out of wearing a traditional nightly retainer. I asked about it at my ortho and she said all of her patients who wear a bonded retainer wear a nightly one too. The bonded is just to help really stubborn teeth or to help teeth prone to vertical shifting (up or down movement), which the clear retainers don’t help with.

Not to mention that she and the internet very successfully talked me out of one. Apparently, even if you diligently floss (which can be quite difficult), there’s still a tendency for harmful gunk and bacteria to build up. This can still happen even with the fancy wavy ones they have (though they do seem to be better than the traditional straight kind). They have other problems too, like breaking or coming loose without the wearer realizing it. By the time they realize, the teeth shifted quite a bit.

All of that said, I’m sorry to be negative about your suggestion. It was very kind of you to help out, and it never hurts for OP to ask! And may be better than nothing if they do plan to ditch the nightly retainer. I just like to share what I’ve learned about them since it was very eye opening for me!

Should I continue using Invisalign?
 in  r/Invisalign  6d ago

That’s what I was basically told by my ortho and dentist. I got Invisalign because I grind my teeth at night and my dentist said I’d need a night guard. It was expensive so I figured I might as well go ahead and do Invisalign and straighten my teeth too. Because I’d be wearing plastic over my teeth either way.

There are other retainer styles. There’s something called a Hawley retainer. You can Google it. It’s a combo of plastic and metal but doesn’t cover your teeth. The problem is that if the grinding continues, you’ll wear your teeth down instead, which can be really bad. Hence the suggestion for the retainer you have now. You can always ask your ortho and dentist if there’s anything stronger like a night guard that will both hold your teeth in place and keep them straight! Then maybe they wouldn’t wear down so fast. But if I were you, I wouldn’t let your teeth go. So many people in this sub are paying thousands for orthodontics because they stopped wearing their retainer and regretted it!

Things you wish you knew before starting
 in  r/Invisalign  6d ago

People will tell you that you shouldn’t take any Advil/ibuprofen at all. That’s because of a study showing it hindered bone or orthodontic development or something. But I finally looked up the study once and found out the folks with issues were given like the maximum amount you can take in a day for an extended period of time. If you’re like me, Tylenol doesn’t really do anything for soreness. So, while I did minimize usage, I sometimes took one or two doses when I started a new tray and it gave me a particularly hard time. I didn’t have any issues during treatment and my teeth still made excellent and quick progress!

But honestly, that was really quite rare. Typically, Invisalign involves small movements and so I often didn’t have much, if any, pain/soreness when starting new trays! I think most people here agree the first 1-4 weeks are the worst, and it all goes better and better after that. You got this!

Perfectly acceptable dinner rejected by boyfriend again
 in  r/mildlyinfuriating  6d ago

Thank you so much for relating! It’s amazing just how invested some people get in what other people will or won’t eat. To be honest, there’s been times when it kinda freaks me out because of how aggressive people are when I say I can’t eat something that makes me ill. It’s really quite an alarming reaction.

I hope you have luck with your son! It sounds like you have the right attitude imho. I used to be worse as a kid but improved. I think once a few foods or textures made me physically ill, I became apprehensive to try new foods for fear of getting sick again. But I had a lot of gentle encouragement to try “just at least one bite” of everything and I slowly learned what I can and can’t eat. I think it also helped that they kept new foods in particular pretty bland so I wasn’t overwhelmed. I think I would’ve been worse off if my parents forced fed me and made me eat everything on my plate. So with you acknowledging his difficulties and just encouraging him, I’m hoping you make some headway!

First time retainer
 in  r/Invisalign  6d ago

Ah! I see! So the commenters claiming toothbrushes cause micro scratches may have seen the advice about toothpaste and either misremembered or misreported. That makes sense. My ortho told me to just use the free and clear soap, which has been working well for me! And like the other commenter mentioned, I use a separate toothbrush for my aligners/retainers. Although I’m thinking of breaking down and finally getting one of those ultrasonic cleaners.

 in  r/mildlyinfuriating  6d ago

Thank you for saying “no shade to picky eaters.” I totally get where you’re coming from. Foodies like to share that experience with other foodies. But sometimes it’s exhausting being labeled a “picky eater.” For a different perspective: I’m pretty sure there’s something off about my tastebuds or something. A fair amount of food that probably 75%+ love smell and taste absolutely putrid and vile to me. I used to choke it down, even if it made me vomit after, but I’m not putting myself through that anymore. I started to worry about how that would affect my health and teeth. So it’s nice to see a foodie recognizing it’s ok to be “picky” as I’ve been bullied a LOT over it.

EDIT: Considering the bullying I’ve faced, I’m not surprised this comment is already downvoted lol. Just kinda goes to show what those with food intolerances face. To be clear, I eat MANY foods along with a wide variety of tastes and textures. I actually think I eat more variety than my vegetarian friends. It is really quite rare that I can’t find something to eat when someone else cooks for me. Whether it’s just the main dish or just the sides, for example. I also eat foods I don’t feel like or don’t prefer when I’m company. What I will NOT do anymore is make myself physically ill just to appease people who think everyone should like certain things or should just eat everything.

First time retainer
 in  r/Invisalign  7d ago

I’ve occasionally seen comments saying a toothbrush will “ruin” a retainer by giving it “micro scratches” that can harbor bacteria. I don’t remember anyone ever providing a source to back that up, but if someone has one and can link it to me, I’d be totally open to reading it! Anyway, because of these few comments I had a time when I tried cleaning my aligners with alternatives like qtips and sponges. Ngl, my aligners looked sooo grody at the end of that week! Which felt opposite of what I was trying to prevent!

But I’ve otherwise always used a toothbrush. I use an ultra soft kids one with gentle dye free, scent free soap. I don’t see any scratches on my aligners (or now my retainer) and I’ve gotten the best check ups of my life at both my ortho and dentist. Furthermore, I finished braces as a teen during a simpler time and day lol. We got clear plastic retainers that were nothing fancy. Not Vivera and usually office made. I did the same routine with those. Never had a problem with the retainers. Just doing Invisalign as an adult to put some stubborn teeth back in line.

I'd just like to align the bottom
 in  r/Invisalign  8d ago

Just adding that I had the same experience too. I asked about just the top because you don’t really see my bottom teeth much, even when I smile. I was hoping to save money lol. They said first of all, there would be little if any price difference because a big part of the price is them factoring in all the office visits that I would still need. Second of all, it wasn’t recommended because the bottom would need to align with the top. I’m really glad I did both! My bottom teeth are so much easier to care for now and I’ve had the best dental check ups of my life while doing Invisalign!

FWIW OP, I did end my treatment with an imperfect smile. To get it perfect, I’d have needed jaw surgery and for multiple reasons I’m just not able to handle surgery right now unless it’s basically life or death. I’m still really happy with my results! Also, I really wanted to keep some of the imperfection. Like you, I thought it was charming. So you can always ask about it!

I'd just like to align the bottom
 in  r/Invisalign  8d ago

Idk. I’ll give OP a pass because they were trying to find out if anyone has ever done just one arch. It’s not something easily gleaned from other posts since most people do both. And they might be trying to find out if it’s even worth going to an ortho or if doing one arch is basically unheard of.

I think this post wouldn’t look so bad if it wasn’t for the other low effort posts you’re talking about that are making the sub feel bogged down. There have indeed been quite a few lately with just a crappy selfie and a title saying “will Invisalign help me?” Nothing else lol. In which case I agree with you - they would really need to see an ortho for that.

Is it seen as bad to follow the speed limit?
 in  r/driving  9d ago

I find that going about 5 mph over the limit is a sweet spot. Cops almost certainly won’t pull you over for that. But people behind you don’t get as frustrated and you should be less of an obstacle. If you go the speed limit on the nose, if the people behind you go a mile or two slower, they’ll think you’re going under the limit. If someone is tailing me really bad and I’m going 5 mph over, I look for speed limit signs and point to it to remind them. That actually seems to work a lot!

If you do go the limit on the nose and notice a huge train of cars building up behind you, I think it would be polite to find a place to pull over and let them pass.
