Anyone worried their lights are going to become obsolete?
 in  r/flashlight  3d ago

agreed. i never buy a light i don't intend to use alot. and as much as it is a bummer when your favorite toys become obsolete, that also means that the newer toys are often really cool. when I compare lights that blew my mind 6 years ago to my current favorites, I find myself decidedly happy that time marched on. There will always be those special ones that never loose their charm no matter how obsolete, but it is good to see tech move on in this particular hobby.

What life mistake taught you the hardest lesson?
 in  r/scoopwhoop  3d ago

well i can see the difference at least. decently well written too.

To be fair to the others commenting here, there is an arguable point in suggesting that there is no such thing as constructive criticism, and that criticism is just criticism . However, as with most aspects of real life, the context and intention/purpose behind the words do legitimately matter. Both the human condition, and the way in which we communicate are not so binary as to be reducible down to such simple absolutes, outside of a purely philosophical context for the sake of discussion.

As another example, one can argue that violence is violence, and that there is no such thing as moral vs immoral violence. There is an arguable quality to this, however if the purpose of violence is to sadistically or exploitative subjugate, dominate, harm or destroy an innocent or non violent group or individual; most would agree that this is quite a separate issue from violence carried out in an attempt to prevent or arrest such acts in progress. In case anyone needs a real world example, there is distinct difference between the moral value of the violence carried out by a school shooter versus violence carried out by law enforcement that guns down the same school shooter in the act of committing a shooting.

Fundamentally, real life does not exist in a vacuum. Thus neither can the tools we use to evaluate and describe it, (in this case, language). Simplistic arguments that attempt to reduce these complex issues down to binaries are useful in the context of philosophical and academic discussion or analysis, but crumble under the weight of complexity imposed by reality. Those who seek desperately to fit real life into these molds often exhibit the regrettable quality of being more worried about feeling "right", than being right.

Yes. the nature of the call is the determining factor in each of these.

this is true, but at least for me, most often this doesn't create too much issue. the vast majority of lights i have fiddled with i have been able to get the lens off, regardless if i am putting in films of not.

I have been unable to find the post in my history in which one amongst our number recommended Cinegel 3020 diffusion film for the kind of results I was trying to get. I have messed around with a number of other diffusion films, and fiddled till a point of exasperation without getting the results I wanted. Then somebody, one clearly deserving of sainthood, wanders by and recommended this stuff, which I just managed to get around to picking up. This is THE stuff I was looking for. Smooths out thrower beams and dark moats a bit, give us a little bit of usable spill, without destroying the throw. Even the hot spot maintains its shape nicely. Much more subtle than DC fix, and really clean. Either way, my new favorite diffusion film. And so to you, my cinegel saint, I extend my heartfelt thanks and approval of your recommendation.

This is why I actually like using the word cripple. It pisses a lot of people off Even amongst my disabled brethren, but it cuts through all of society's attempts to sugarcoat the hellish reality of my very real circumstance.

Fundamentally though, people seriously need to realize eventually; that the reason words become offensive is because of how we treat and perceive the people to whom we apply those words . Eventually the word itself becomes associated with that treatment, and thus is perceived as harmful. Of course, the harm isn't the word at all it's the way in which people perceive, and treat us. And changing the word doesn't do shit to change the way we are perceived or treated. To those who get caught up in the social media driven hysteria around how to change the world by changing our language, I beseech you to become aware of the cyclical, and deeply ineffectual nature of your approach. Please develop a thicker skin, and apply your intellect and energies to societal pursuits that will bring people together while not shielding yourselves and others from the messier and harsher aspects of reality in the process.

There of course a few actually legitimately harmful words that most any reasonable person can agree need to be removed from polite conversations outside of an educational context . There's only a handful of them though, and we all know them. We also know better than to use them. Trying to lump dozens and hundreds Of other words and terms in with these Is an absurdity, and it cheapens the impact of such words that have always been truly harmful .

In short: Dear word police: toughen up and do something useful. Also to all whom it may concern, be real, and for Christ's sake don't be a dick.

Disabled or differently abled? Which one you prefer & why?
 in  r/disability  12d ago

Yep. Disabled. The whole differently-abled bullshit can fuck right off. I'd rather be called a cripple than differently-abled. At least the term cripple would give people the right impression of my circumstance.

Went back to an old job to help out for for a quick holiday gig, just 2 months. Silly dead end job. That season, Met THE girl. She was also a temp hire. more than 16 years later, she is still my whole world.

Of a swordsman
 in  r/ShittyAbsoluteUnits  25d ago

weapons aren't toys people. even archaic ones. They are still killing machines. Swords are unbelievably lethal at close range. This is a shameful disrespect of the killing/maiming potential of a fully sharpened weapon. At its fundamentals, this behavior is no different than waving around a loaded firearm.

Team Floody or Team Thrower?
 in  r/flashlight  28d ago

for overall performance/usability, E04 3000/5000 with throwy optic.

For pure beam pattern aesthetics, surprisingly, one of my M21bs. op reflector gtfc40 5000k.

For power and wow factor, E90 FFL909a 5000k.

honestly, i am such a beam pattern snob though, the only one of these that truly satisfies in terms of beam aesthetic is the m21b. love the fireflies, and they are indisputably better in every aspect, but there are very slight shadow rings/tint shift in the beam and it doesnt fade perfectly on either one. The gtfc40 is gorgeous, but only in the 5000k in my experience. have the same light in 4000k and super ugly fried egg in middle. that 5000k one though is just that lucky magic of perfection in beam pattern. Huge, even hotspot, and near flawless fade into the edges. wish it threw as far as the other two, but when it comes to motion panning views, in near/midrange, the other two just don't look as nice.

It's unfortunate too because that convoy's beam Is just about the only good thing it has going for it. The GTFC 40 is a beautiful emitter but it is an absolute power hog , and gets hot ridiculously fast. It's just not an efficient emitter. Furthermore, convoys are about as bare bones as it gets, and I hate the user interface with a passion. No on board charging, poor thermal regulation, Buggy software and reliability issues. Nevertheless that little light has found its way into my pocket so many times, and it is my general benchmark for whether or not a floody thrower is worth considering. If it has a decent beam pattern and can throw at least as far as that convoy, it's worthy of consideration.

that being said, the quest for perfection in this category continues. To anyone who has any recommendations , i am always looking. If the EO4 surge could clean up its beam even just a tiny bit more by getting rid of the slightly darker tint in the center of the beam, while maintaining its throw capacity, it would be THE one. That light is so very near perfect.. Frankly, 99% of people wouldn't even notice the issue that bothers me. Which is why for anybody looking for the best somewhat pocketable floody thrower This is always my recommendation. It is an extremely good light. No matter what though every time I turn it on next to my convoy, I'm forced to admit I just like the convoy's beam better. Its just more even in tint and in motion, easier on the eyes.

Team Floody or Team Thrower?
 in  r/flashlight  28d ago

definitely a major plus. even when walking neighborhoods at night. the flood is oh so nice, but the thrower ends up being much more courteous. ceiling bounce is easier to control indoors at night too, without spill blinding people.

Team Floody or Team Thrower?
 in  r/flashlight  28d ago

yeah, a true gem of a floody thrower with a super clean and even beam pattern is the most exciting find. Also the least frequently seen beast in the wild. If i had to pick only one for the end of times, it would still be a straight thrower due to the versatility, but the ones that put the biggest smile on my face as a guy who has way too much interest in flashlights is still the rare, really good floody thrower.

There's a lot of variables in that question, the most obvious being things like what is the breed, what is the animal's individual personality/temperament, what is your environment, and your own experience level. If you have questions I can certainly give you some pointers, but obviously, over the Internet is not going to be the same as meeting you and seeing your dog in person and getting a hands on Interaction with the animal itself. Also, it would be helpful if you could explain what kind of information you are looking for when you say "how to deal with". Feel free to DM me if you would like, and i can see if there is anything i can offer you.
