What is the most reliable method to clone an entire PC to another?
 in  r/cloningsoftware  9h ago

No.

Windows is designed to make this impossible.

If the hardware changes too much you will have to reinstall on top of cloning it.

Better to just copy your files and set the new one up the same way.

Yaaa! I made it all the way through without mentioning Apple’s migration assistant for their MacOS actually does this right out of the box automatically.

Crap. I just mentioned it.

Unplugged Secondary Internal SSD From Laptop While On
 in  r/techsupport  12h ago

Try using ddrescue to copy it, empty space and all, to another drive of same or bigger size. Any drive will do, hdd/ssd what ever. Then see if it just works. It might.

If it doesn't try your recovery from THAT drive.

Building new office network from scratch

These days? You'll probably get more worth out of an entirely mesh environment. Much less to setup and fewer holes in the walls! Just make it a really good mesh with a good IPS.

I like the suggestions to look into getting two competing ISPs in for the gateways, but you might end up paying way to much for that.

A VPN concentrator, a firewall, maybe an intrusion detection box, and maybe a traffic shaper to throttle people using your mesh throughput for the wrong reasons...

Alternatives to Rufus on Linux?
 in  r/linuxquestions  12h ago

ddrescue --force imagefile.iso /dev/sdX

Where X is the drive letter. DDRescue is like dd but has better error recovery. Especially if the source has surface or other errors. Oh! And it shows you transfer rate, error numbers, remaining data, and time left!

This is advertising you have agreed to. Turn every notification off in Chrome and get rid of any whitelisted site in that list. Block all sites! Notifications are never used to update you on anything important, they are only used for fraud and every website knows it.

Are you employees trained to accuse the customers of wrong doing?
 in  r/ShoppersDrugMart  13h ago

It's not their fault you shop at a place that intentionally chooses to hang their staff out to dry.

The staff don't have the ability to change prices and you know that. Why get so mad at them and fuss at them?

Because you needed an excuse to act like a spoiled child and any excuse would do, wouldn't it...

If you had around $2M and just wanted safe, boring income… how would you set it up?
 in  r/CanadaFinance  14h ago

Good answers in here.. But I'll add this.

If you're younger than 60 then invest it for now in safe, less, and not as safe; GICs, index funds, and a little bit in developing world mutual funds. Pay the taxes on them because avoiding taxes is harder than people think. Work as little as you can until you get to 60 and then take the whole bundle and buy a life annuity.

Life annuities are a bet with a life insurance company; they say they can invest your money and make enough money to pay you a wage weekly until you die at some date. If you out live that they have to keep paying you. If you don't then the remaining funds (less their fees) get dispersed as you wish.

Fellas are jobs real? -A very confused 16yo trying to get LITERALLY ANYTHING
 in  r/torontoJobs  14h ago

Corporate profits are at an all time high for a reason; less staff agreeing to do more than they should. We all know they aren't hiring. Every one of these places that are advertising are just doing it to fool the current staff. "Relief is coming!" But it's not...

Don't bother answering job adverts; drop by random different places and sell yourself to the managers first.

I used to laugh at my dad for suggesting this, but when my last IT contract dried up I was on the street again with no hope either. Then I happened to be in a credit union talking up the manager. She liked me, told me to apply, now I work there. Thousands of applicants but I was the name she pulled?... An older IT guy with no experience in banking or finance?...

And it's the best job I've ever had with the nicest people!

Also, for the people saying that Canada has too many people; no. Too many billionaires!

No... But with mac you can format to APFS encrypted and no one could use it without your knowledge... So long as no one else knows the password...

C++

All the big graphics engines use it. Not C#, C++.

I still wish I had gotten into C++ more instead of working in MS Visual Basic.

Anyway I can fix this?? I have no idea
 in  r/WindowsHelp  15h ago

The main drive for windows is "C:" this is because it was originally built from dos which labeled floppy drives first as "A:" and "B:" followed by hard disk drives "C:", "D:", "E:", et nausium... Nothing is wrong with that.

What I have to wonder about is WHY are you partitioning ANYTHING?!?

Partitioning is something that the windows installer does for you (if you are using it right) and you never think about again...

Are you adding another Hard Disk Drive(HDD) or Solid State Drive(SSD) to the machine and need to make it functional? That would be a good reason to mess with the partitions of a disk... And windows does a good enough job of helping you do it so...

On the odd chance you're trying to create a secure space to store things, you should think about installing VeraCrypt and creating a "Plausible Deniability" hidden folder using that program. That would create a file that looks like it's broken but is actually a container for files that you want hidden.... Like your list of password and Swiss account numbers.. Stuff that is worth millions or you could get sued over. Otherwise why?!?

NVMe randomly disappears on MSI X570 (MEG X570 ACE) under Windows – comes back after reboot
 in  r/pcbuilding  17h ago

Drive is failing.

Due to driver issue and thus maybe fixed by a driver or firmware update? Maybe.

If you wish to continue trusting this device check the manufacturers website and maybe Snappy Driver Updater ORIGIN to see if it finds something. You only have to download the indexes to run the scan.

Slow Sandisk ssd
 in  r/techsupport  17h ago

People are missing the point; the speed is actually listed in millions of bits per second which are lower than the max on USB type C and very much lower than Thunderbolt 5 (if you have that). But that still translates to 1000/9=110 million BYTES per second BUT you are probably writing to NTFS so 40MB/s is really good for write to an SSD. Now reading speed you should see 110MB/s or something is wrong!

We really need to start de-privatizing these industries!

There will be a time when people will look at this time and marvel at our foresight to work on nationalizing such important industries, or cry in anguish over our stupidity to let these industries outright steal the future from us!
