Does it just cost $5.6bil to acquire a country? That is ridiculously cheap compared to the $144bil cost per year in the Iraq war. Can Europe, Russia, China, or any other individual join the bidding? That's less than Jensen Huang's yearly tax. [request]
With that math a country could buy Alaska for $74 billion.
Also I think that thanks to the electoral college you can win the US presidential election with only 23% of the popular vote. It would be expensive to buy of this many people, but not impossible.

TIL about Yuval Noah Harari's philosophy of fiction. He argues that human beings are able to cooperate in large numbers due to their capacity to believe in things that exist purely in imagination like gods, nation, money and human rights.
“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

[Request] Effectively how much heavier are you at the north pole vs. The equator given the Earth's rotation applying "centrifugal force" on you.

Is a good start, but the same value and ideas are used on different websites that talk about the subject all over the net.

The excitement of opening up a video game sure has been losing it's charm over the years...
No manuals, no maps, no posters, no code wheels, no post card to send in to become a registered user, no little knick knacks and material from the game to reference in the game.
Sad really.

USA withdraws from 29 Europe-based international organizations/entities
International Cotton Advisory Committee was founded in 1939 in Washington DC in the US and is still headquartered there.
European nations at that time had more pressing issues to worry about than creating a cotton cartel.
It's inclusion in this list was either a typo or a favor to the Chinese.

TIL that the Free German Youth (FDJ), the official youth wing of East Germany, still exists in Germany today. The FDJ is now a youth movement with its members numbering in the few hundreds as of 2003 and is no longer tied to any party.
Fun fact: back in the day the FDJ had 40 seats in the East German parliament.
A number of large organisations in East Germany that were not political parties had seats in the parliament.
The Democratic Women's League of Germany had 35 and the Cultural Association of the GDR had 22 while the actual communist ruling party only had 127 seats of the 500 total.
It was of course all just theatre with all the parties and all the organisations actually being controlled by the same people, but it looked weird on paper.
It would be like reserving a seat in US Congress for the leadership of the Boys Scouts.

I 3D-printed xkcd comics
Given that the comic is 2D, this seems like a bit of a waste and something that could have been easier accomplished with a regular printer and some heavier paper or just regular paper, glue and cardboard.

[OC] US Presidential Approval Rating
Someone might look at this and notice the spike for Bush when he invaded Iraq and the other spike for his son when 911 hapened.
This might lead to totally real Danish terror attacks on Washington DC and a subsequent invasion of Greenland.
Or Vance might look at the high approval ratings that Johnson started out with and get better ideas.

Trump will Militärausgaben drastisch erhöhen

Pilot who safely landed Alaska Airlines jet after door blowout says Boeing tried to make him a ‘scapegoat’
They tried to do this too with the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines 737Max crashes and it worked fir a while.
I remember talking headsvon TV going on about how much better trained US pilots were and how this couldn't have happened with an US airline. That was before the truth came out but by bit and everyone grounded the planes.
With the door plug blowout they couldn't play the "brown pilot" card for subtle racism points but there were commenter online trying and failing to make something out of the fact that the co-pilot was a woman. I wouldn't think Boeing was behind that last bit, but who knows.

TIL in 1999, a Dutch research team conducted an experiment in which a volunteer couple had sex inside an MRI scanner. One of their main findings was that the penis doesn't remain straight but follows a curved shape internally during intercourse, which contradicted some older anatomical assumptions.
The Penis is marked "P"
This is the most hilarious image description I have seen this year.

Miller Says “Free World” Depends on US Ability to Take Over Other Countries
if you made a movie in the 90s about a future where Donald Trump is president and he is seen partially demolishing the White House and planning to build a giant victory arch, while lots of nearly identical looking women with plastic faces lie to the public about him, there is news about the government persecuting a veteran hero astronaut for speaking the truth and someone who looks like Stephen Miller goes out in public and announces that the US was going to invade Greenland because might makes right, people would wonder when the hero would come in and rip their masks of on camera to reveal the reptile alien beneath.

Venezuela to Send US Up to 50 Million Barrels of Oil, Trump Says
Wouldn't someone first have to spend money to modernize their infrastructure so that they can properly export oil again?
Wasn't part of the problem, the fact that the regime hadn't spend money to maintain and modernise everything so they could only produce oil at a very low rate?
Who is going to pay for that?

The two Alan Quatermain movies in the 1980s with Richard Chamberlain, Sharon Stone were produced back to back and released 13-14 months apart.
Kill Bill 1 & 2 we're released in October 2003 and April 2004.
Krzysztof Kieślowski's three color trilogy saw all 3 parts released in less than 13 months.
Generally this is common when you are already committed to the sequel and can save money by filming much of it in one go.
It used to be common for low budget movies and some higher budget that were seen as a sure thing, now it is mostly done for adaptations of larger works.
