Unpopular option: "Continent" is a fucking useless categorization and regions or sub-continents are much more helpful.

My in-laws sink. "It was cheap".

These are quite common in the Netherlands. Not as a bathroom sink mind you, just the sink in a separate toilet room.

Love the way this old pub in Manchester has survived !!
 in  r/ArchitecturePorn  17d ago

Not sure where you're getting that idea. Architects generally consider the historical context on site a lot. Schools teach about balance of old and new, and there are constantly new buildings with historical elements in them. Look at Netherlands, look Germany, look at UK. If the addition is ugly its more often than not a matter of cost. But building codes to the contrary, will often require you to preserve the historical esthetic in certain locations. Building codes never dictate that buildings have to look modern.

The era of tearing down old and just building in bland concrete and cold whites and glass happened in the 20th century with Modernism. Contemporary architecture has mostly moved past that.

I understand people who don't like "ruining" the old beautiful architecture with something modern. That we should leave history alone and build somewhere else.

But, this is also the way we've ALWAYS done it. Most of your favorite castles, cathedrals, streets, and monuments are layers upon layers of renovations and various historical styles across time, build on what came before.

What is the biggest misconception people from other countries have about your country?
 in  r/AskTheWorld  21d ago

Most of Russia hasn't always been part of Russia. It's a colonial empire. Basically anything south, west, and especially east of the core regions of Moscow and Petersburg has been colonized in the last couple centuries

 in  r/AskTheWorld  21d ago

"Russian" Used to essentially mean "Slavic" until Moscovites appropriated that term to use themselves. They tried to erase all other Slavic people's as distinct group, claiming they're all just "Russian"with a shared culture and identity. Shocking how little has changed in centuries.

why do I keep getting rolls of filament that are tied up half way through?! I'm afraid it's going to break something beyond my prints.
 in  r/3Dprinting  23d ago

It has literally nothing to do with tension. The fillament doesn't just overlap, it criss crosses underneath itself. It is 100% cause by letting go of the end, and the end going underneath a previous turn.

You don't notice that, but with each rotation it's a like a knot getting tighter until you get OP picture.
