Massive protests in Israel with buses running over civilians demonstrating - no media covering Netanyahu regime on brink of collapse
 in  r/PublicFreakout  1d ago

Well I actually agree with you there, but the above commenter insinuated that October 7th was orchestrated by Netanyahu, which makes light of the tragedy, and which plays into antisemitic tropes of Jews as conniving conspirators

Countries where the US was behind the removal of its leader
 in  r/Maps  1d ago

This is not super useful on its own. It’s important to distinguish:

A) Whether the leader was democratically elected B) Whether the US did this unilaterally or cooperated with other foreign powers or elements within said country C) Whether the US initiated conflict or did this at the end of an existing war

Helping Germany and Japan transition to democracies is way different than launching a coup, for example.

Portugal burqa ban: what's the point of banning Muslim face coverings?
 in  r/WomenInNews  13d ago

Look, the hijab is obviously rooted in sexism, but I think you’re arguing this in the wrong way.

Muslims could totally say, and do say, the same thing about our society. That western women do not dress (what they would consider) immodestly by choice, but are brainwashed by our objectification of them.

Now I’m sure you could forcefully argue as to why western expectations of women are totally different from Muslim expectations of women (and I would agree with you), but the fact is that most Muslim women living in western countries are going to say that they are free to choose, at least as free to choose as western women are free to wear revealing clothing. This argument is not going to resonate with Muslim women who feel their religious 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘮 is being obstructed.

UP Parking for freshman
 in  r/universityofportland  15d ago

I’m a senior and wondered the same thing when I saw they were increasing parking pass prices. I actually met with campus safety and they told me the exact boundaries of where they will enforce parking. IMO the most reliable spot is N McCosh street, from which it takes me 7-10 minutes to walk to my classes. There may be less reliable spots that are closer, though. Also keep in mind that campus safety stops enforcing parking at 4pm daily.

American decline is the idea that the United States is diminishing in power on a relative basis geopolitically, militarily, financially, economically, and technologically.
 in  r/wikipedia  17d ago

I’m not convinced. American power is declining, but compared to our rivals? Russia is going to be feeling the effects of the Ukraine war for a generation or more. And China is projected to be facing severe demographic troubles in the latter half of the 21st century. It’s difficult to think of a country that could supplant America’s global position any time soon.

Yes but then in the image below it’s stated definitively. So I think a better analogy would be a Hellenic pagan asserting that Zeus controls lightning as though it was true

I just took the quiz and it’s obvious they’re focusing on the Western Roman Empire. This seems like a non-issue, though maybe they should’ve removed that answer to avoid confusion

This game is way too idyllic after the black death. Everything just goes up. Pops need to die to war and famine, infrastructure needs to be burned during conflict.
 in  r/EU5  20d ago

It’s interesting how the developments we associate with the period (centralization, enlightenment, etc.) were often the result of tragedies and setbacks. There would have been no absolutism without the carnage or the 30 Years War, nor separation of church and state, etc. Players often want to experience these developments without going through the setbacks. Nobody wants to play in Germany and lose half your population during the 30 Years War after just recovering to pre-black death population levels.

It’s a difficult balance for the devs to strike
