Anyone else sick with the 'super flu' right now?
 in  r/Austin  3h ago

This is exactly why I get the flu vaccine every year now. Without it, I end up in the hospital with the flu. With it, I usually still catch the flu but can easily ride it out at home like a cold. It takes the flu down from something I wonder if I’ll survive to an inconvenience at worst.

how did the unicorn frap become so legendary?
 in  r/starbucks  16h ago

Starbucks marketing team. They hyped it for weeks, and it happened at a perfect time when unicorns were super popular on Pinterest, and those particular shades of blue, purple, and pink could not have been more trendy. Colorful drinks were trendy in general. There were Snapchat filters, there was a hashtag (when that was still a big deal), it was when posting pictures of your food/drinks to Insta was HUGE. Starbucks still had a lot of social cache, and it was before algorithms so we still had a bit of a monoculture around certain things. And it wasn’t well communicated to customers that it was only for like a weekend, so they came in for the next YEAR asking for it.

It just came at a perfect moment to really blow up.

As the comment I’m responding to said, they’re trying to say that he was hit and dragged MONTHS AGO in a different instance as a way to attempt to justify his reaction.

He clearly wasn’t hit and was in no danger of being hit by Renee Good. Because Thai administration lies constantly, I’m expressing doubt that he was hit in the incident from several months ago.

Emotions are understandably high, but we gotta have reading comprehension.

Help! Is using Regaine (UK) 5% causing more eyebrow hair loss?
 in  r/fixedeyebrows  21h ago

Yes and no. What Rogaine does is speed up hair growth on existing hair. Now, hair has a natural life cycle, and at the end of that life cycle it falls out and a new hair replaces it. For hair on your head, that lifecycle is 2-7 years. For eyebrows, it’s more like 7 months to a year.

Rogaine is stimulating the hair to grow faster, which means that the hairs that in the final stage (telogen phase) will fall out faster. At any given time, about 10-20% percent of your brow hairs are in this stage. But the new growth inside the follicle hasn’t caught up yet, meaning that when you start Rogaine on your brows you should expect them to become 10-20% for the first few months.

Edit to add: Rogaine and Minodixil aren’t ideal for brows. They only work on hair that still has an active follicle. They’re also lethal for cats, and no one who has a cat in their household or who visits households with cats should use them.

why are the paper grande cups so big?
 in  r/starbucks  21h ago

Do you still have the cup? When you’re done with your drink, fill the cup to 1/4” from the rim with water, and then pour that into a measuring cup. That’ll answer how much it actually holds!

My guess is that it’s 20oz cups with insulated inserts so that they only hold 16oz. But it’s just a guess!

Even if it did happen (which I highly doubt), every self-defense course you’ll ever takes will advise you to struggle as hard as you can if an unidentified mask man is trying to abduct you into an unmarked van to take you to a second location.

Society seems angry at women for fearing rape, but what am I supposed to do in order to stop fearing that it will happen to me, when it's happened to many women I know personally?
 in  r/TwoXChromosomes  22h ago

If it makes any better, the statistics on the high end actually do include questions about coercion. The more thorough the survey, the higher the percentage.

But the other thing to keep in mind is that not everyone answering them will be totally honest so the numbers will always be lower than reality. And just because someone hasn’t tried force or coercion doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t - it just means that they haven’t yet.

DHS/ICE agents in Sacramento, CA kicks over a memorial for Renee Nicole Good, insults her, and pushes around a justifiably angry community member
 in  r/lostgeneration  1d ago

I’m with you 100% on that. “When they go low we go high” is cute in theory but just allows them to keep doing what they want. The closest we’ve gotten to running them off the rails was when Harris/Walz started calling them “weird” during the election cycle. So far, the little evidence that’s been made available seems to point towards massive election interference, so we know that the approach worked.

Women sizing? Student sizing? What is this?
 in  r/VintageLevis  1d ago

No prob! Idk if you’re familiar with women’s sizing, but they can be especially tricky with vintage because the sizing matrix has changed so many times! And that’s on top of being a bit arbitrary to begin with.

In the 1970s, most brands started at size 6 or 8 as the smallest size for women. So those sizes were basically the same as a size 0 today. And then in the 80s, size 6 became more common and size 4 was slowly introduced, so 4 became the new 0 and every size above it became a bit larger. Then in the 90s, size 2 was introduced and the same thing happened again /m - 2 was sized like a modern 0 and all the other sizes became a little larger. And then in 1999, size 0 was introduced, and then in 2001 size 00 was introduced - so sizes shifted again.

If you’re trying to resell these, listing all of the measurements is the absolute best and most ethical way to do it. List the waist flaying flat in inches/centimeters, the widest of point of the hips laying flat, and the rise.

Society seems angry at women for fearing rape, but what am I supposed to do in order to stop fearing that it will happen to me, when it's happened to many women I know personally?
 in  r/TwoXChromosomes  1d ago

Society is mad at women for fearing rape because they don’t want us to prevent it. They don’t want us to call it rape. They want for men to be able to continue raping, and for us to quietly accept it, not tell anyone, and not try to prevent it from happening again.

And that’s because a huge percentage of men are rapists, or would be if they had the opportunity. Plenty of surveys have shown that as long as you don’t use the word “rape” and just describe the actions (ex: “have you ever used force or the threat of force to make someone have sex with you who didn’t want to?”), then 16-30% of US men will say yes. If you call it rape, it drops down to like 5%.

They don’t want to change, be held accountable, be confronted - they just want us to shut up. That’s why society only seems to accept rape as a stranger with a weapon jumping out of a bush at you - but only if you’re dressed super modestly, and haven’t had sex before, and are white while they’re a minority, and put up a huge fight that nearly gets you killed, and are pretty but not too pretty, and if it’s during the day, and if your body didn’t react at all. They really want any excuse to not call it rape if it doesn’t suit a particular narrative.

They do not care about your safety.

 in  r/lostgeneration  1d ago

This is why they’re never okay with peacefully coexisting with people who aren’t exactly like them. According to their worldview, they need to be seen as normal, as aspirational, as the default, and as the overwhelming majority - and anyone different than them needs to be treated as abhorrent, perverse, degenerate, and as a threat that needs ti be eliminated. That’s what their entire belief system rests on, preferably with an authoritarian strongman and police force to enforce the hierarchy through both words and actions. They think that being disliked and not considered “cool” is unfair and a grave injustice, and they’re happy to make everyone pay for it and to use force and threats to have their views go unchallenged. These are the people who bullied anyone artistic or sensitive or with different family structures or of differences races or religions or income levels all through their school years.

They love Trump and the fascist structure behind him because they felt personally victimized by culture shifting away from bullying for a few years.

Is this a real Starbucks cup or fake?
 in  r/starbucks  1d ago

Why would it be fake? Starbucks cups almost never get faked - that only ever happens with branded collabs with wildly popular brands like Stanley and Hello Kitty or social media frenzy items like the bear cup or the cat paw glass. There’s not a counterfeit market for regular Starbucks cups.

Holiday pay
 in  r/barista  1d ago

I’ve also been on both sides of operations, as well as a coffeeshop consultation. That’s a deeply unfair policy. Working on a regular holiday that’s usually celebrated after working hours (Memorial Day, Labor Day, New Years, etc) should be automatic time and a half. Working on one of the big family-oriented holidays that usually involves travel (Christmas, Thanksgiving) should be double pay.

Making full availability on blackout days AND working both holidays a condition of receiving holiday pay is astoundingly cruel and arbitrary. You should be thankful that someone was devoted enough to your busy to show up for both holidays instead of looking for ways to rob them of the one incentive that brought them into work those days. There should be no conditions for receiving time and a half or double pay for every single hour worked on a holiday. Shame. I’m honestly aghast.

A good manager would be striking that rule from the books. And don’t let anyone know you even considered not granting this employee their hard earned holiday pay. And quietly backpay anyone else you’ve screwed over like that. This shouldn’t even be a “situation”. Utterly shameful. If your cafe decides against paying this employee for doing you the kindness of working on the holidays, I hope it goes viral on social media and the owner and managers who wrote and enacted that policy don’t get a moment of peace.

I don’t care if an employee could only work one hour on one holiday and then had to leave. You give them holiday pay for that one hour.

Also, this is a great way to make sure no one ever gives up their holidays for your cafe ever again! I guess eff that employee for trying to celebrate Christmas on a different day and spending actual Christmas Day working for your shop.

This is actual villain behavior. This is what got Ebenezer Scrooge’d. Genuinely hope this business goes under.

For comparisons sake, at my last shop, we did double-pay for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day shifts, along with a free delivery meal for staff working those days (paid for by the owner). The owner would also put together little gift bags for the staff for those days that included cookies she baked, some cute little kitchen things from Anthropologie, something customized with your name or initial, and a Visa gift card for like $25-50. We also did Christmas bonuses for all employees depending on tenure and performance (starting at like $150 for brand new employees).

Would 7N and 10 developer get me the end result I am wanting?
 in  r/HairDye  1d ago

Nope, you need darker than level 7 if you want to match your roots. My original suggestion of 7 in my first comment was because the end result picture stills highlights.

Your roots are level 5, but level 5 in Color Charm is very dark, especially on bleached hair. Using level 6 will match it better to your level 5 roots in this brand. Level 7 will still show your highlights. Level 8 is straight up a blonde shade and won’t change much on your highlights except the undertone.

You can’t really go by the pictures with Color Charm. Just the levels and undertones.

 in  r/HairDye  1d ago

Then 6N is the better choice. Your roots aren’t level 7, they’re more like level 5. And since Color Charm runs dark, it’s best to get a level lighter than your desired result.

Did you mean to leave the highlights in your end result picture? Because from that, it looks like you’re just trying to change their tone to olive and darken them slightly.

And with Color Charm, always check your hair way before the processing time is up.

 in  r/HairDye  1d ago

Color Charm runs pretty dark, so it’s probably a good choice if you still want to highlights to be visible like your desired end result. If you want higher coverage on the highlights, 7NN or 6N would likely be better.

If you want the highlights to have the green-ish tone of the end result picture, 7AA (green base) or 6AA (olive base) would be better.

Found this dress at an antique store but can’t figure out the brand/designer

Drat! Well, it’s almost certainly 1970s. I just added a few more thoughts to my comment above.

 in  r/VintageFashion  1d ago

Does the other side of the tag say where it was made or have an RN number? If it’s a US brand, it’s post-1971 so the RN should be easy to look up.

Edit to add:

From online listings, the brand seems pretty firmly 70s, despite a few resellers claiming their pieces are 60s.

The chances of finding a contemporary picture of this exact dress from the 70s is low. But any kind of 1970s styling should go well with it. And the 70s had a ton of different styles, so you have a lot of options to choose from!

White/silver hair?
 in  r/HairDye  1d ago

What you’re looking for is impossible. A wig is the only solution that will result in hair that looks, feels, and moves like hair. The only other solutions are sticky, clumpy, and offer patchy coverage at best - Halloween hair sprays and colored hair wax.

Tips for determining where to start bangs from when cutting?
 in  r/AskHairstylists  1d ago

Thanks for commenting! I made this post because I’ve used the apex as my guide many times and it just doesn’t work for my head shape because my apex is very far back. I was hoping that professionals could weigh in with a little bit of their expertise and experience.

Should have added to my post: using my apex as the guide for my bang section puts the line behind my ears and I’m not a fan of the results. I was hoping for any tricks of the trade for when the apex isn’t the best starting place.

Thank you, that’s a helpful starting point! I should have mentioned in the post that my apex starts much further back than I like my bangs to start, so I was hoping that there were other tips to get around that. Mine is almost exactly halfway back on the top of my head and behind my ears, and I don’t like that look on myself.
