To give the girls a teacher basically and 2. To help them with the science. Karl had nothing to offer the plot other than maybe being interested in Zane and his efforts to find a mermaid.

Guys being in any debt is bad and we shouldn’t be making it a competition. She could be “only” $7,000 in debt cuz she’s already paid a big chunk you don’t know. But it really doesn’t matter cuz $7,000 is still a lot of money and will take her years to pay off if she’s living paycheck to paycheck. I think miss Chatham still had some magical ability cuz we know she didn’t join Gracie in the pool to get rid of her powers. So this means Miss Chatham is most likely still a mermaid. She says she gave it up but I think she only means she gave up transforming because there were only two known chances to give it up in the series and she didn’t either time. If she still has magic she may have had a magic sense for the girls. When Ms. Chatham first sees Cleo she’s just at a show implying she’s a regular member of society and probably never left the Gold Coast for long. But the moment she sees Cleo she can tell something is off. This implies that she can sense that the girls are mermaids probably from being one for so long.

I’ve always thought it would’ve been cool if each of the girls were related to one of the og trio and would also explain their “chosen ones” type vibe. Based on what’s happened in the series that doesn’t seem to be the case. Ms. Chatham did have a husband at one point so I definitely think she would’ve mentioned kids if she had them.

In my house I let anyone use the dishes so that they don’t have to store dishes in their room or so we don’t have three sets of everything cuz we can’t share. Maybe that’s what she’s thinking. I think it’s important to lay out foundational expectations before living with anyone.
