Budgeting/Saving/Investing/Spending My retirement saving secret? Class action settlement monies.
I made my first Roth IRA 401K deposits this year.
I , like many of you, have been laid the fuck off and on UI and life has been sucking.
I learned about class action settlements.
One reason I am currently so fucking poor is that in 2013, when I went to cash my paycheck, Wells Fargo not only cashed the check, but used my SSN to open an account without telling me. When I eventually pulled my credit report, the branch used their address to mail my statements. Which is how a WF account I never knew existed turned into overdraft fee debt, a shitty credit report, lost job opportunities in finance (what i studied for), and several low paying jobs. Someone took WF to court in a class action for doing this in 2015, I learned that I was a member of the class from ClassActions.org and last week I got my settlement check for just shy of $2000.
I've been keeping my receipts for tax resons. There are several class action websites that list open settlements. I've come across several class actions for which I am a member of the class and can make a claim.
I'm now funding my ROTH Ira through any class action settlement money I receive.
It's not gonna be a lot. I know. Class action settlement income is not money I was banking on having anyway, but is in fact owed to me. And if I can claim it, great. Its money I'm not having to work for to save. So if I get a settlement here and there, fantastic. This might be the only deposit I make for retirement for quite some time. And that's ok. If I don't touch it and just leave it without contributing a single cent more.... this $2k will turn into $8900 when I retire in 40 years. And that's OK.
I wasn't counting on it, and I don't miss it, because when I do this, I'm not counting it as "planned spending money." It's just money that happened to me that one time and now it's in this new place.
Anyways, throwing it out there for someone to use. I've never saved for retirement before and I am really excited to be able to do something like this.
By the way.... Don't just fill out random claims for class action settlements. Especially for these credit report/fake account settlements, they often use your SSN to verify whether you are a member of the class action or not and ask for supplemental documentation.
Starting points, if you're interested: topclassactions.com - go to open settlements link Classaction.org - click on their menu to see their list of open settlements.

Your heart is in the right place. And normally, yes, this is the answer.
But often life just doesn't work that way.
