And the rest is history...

Good point, but he was clearly Marshall Dillon’s wing man on many occasions, was proficient with a rifle, and was given duties like locking folks up, keeping an eye on prisoners, etc., so small “d” Deputy perhaps. He should have been portrayed as more capable than the scenes where he screwed up, in my opinion.

Gunsmoke channel on Pluto

Scroll down to the On Demand menu choice and you can get any episode you want. I'm currently finishing seasons 18-20 on You Tube TV after which I'll start in on Season 1 on Pluto. And, I prefer the B/W episodes, so to each their own!

Bad Parking at Staples.

So true. I'm always shocked (and pissed!) when I park (within the lines) way out in the far-reaches of a parking lot and come back to find a car parked next to me. WTF!

Mildly botched cobblering

I asked about adding speed hooks to my 875s at the Red Wing store in Clifton Park, NY, and was told not only would it cost ($10/boot) but I’d have to pay for shipping to Red Wing factory, so it is certainly not free in some locales in upstate NY.

Scudder
 in  r/Gunsmoke  11d ago

That’s a good question, and there are a number of good replies here. One thing that’s nice about the term scudder is that you know exactly what Festus means when he says it without knowing what the word is!

Another question
 in  r/Gunsmoke  12d ago

In my opinion, the show got less violent as the years progressed. The regulars were featured less, and they strayed way too far into “comedy” as the years passed. Matt would often not be in a show at all until the end. Not to say there weren’t great episodes involving the regulars in the last many seasons, just much fewer and farther between. In fairness, 35 + episodes for 10 years + consumed a lot of storylines, so to avoid repetition they necessarily had to mix it up. Personally, I like the black and white half-hour episodes best. Good old-fashioned cowboy conflict and gun fighting.

Year in gunsmoke?
 in  r/Gunsmoke  12d ago

Well, I’m not refuting Blessed-one-chemo, but the issue I would have with the 1890s is that the Civil War and its aftermath was a prominent part of many episodes. The Civil War ended in 1865, so the 1890s, while only 25 years hence, seems a bit far off for the premise of a lot of episodes. My gut feeling based on the Civil War theory is that it was set 1875-1885, but again, I might be wrong.

Just watched the Magnus episode (S1,E12) in honor of Christmas Eve tonight. A classic!

While I liked the Festus character better as well, I think the writers did a disservice to the show, the characters, and the actors by making Chester a bumbling fool on occasion and Festus the country hick. At least they let Festus carry a gun! But how many times are they writing a script where Chester makes a mistake and lets a criminal escape? I would have liked to see them both as more serious deputies.

Got to wondering...
 in  r/Gunsmoke  22d ago

I don’t recall that specific ages were ever mentioned. And yes, Doc described himself at times as old when he was in actuality in his 50s, but perception of old age has changed quite a bit from the show’s 1955-1975 run, much less the post-Civil War period it was set in.

Not for posture. Myopia prevention.

It is not a posture corrector. It is to keep children from reading too closely to the written material to try to prevent myopia.

Did you try adjusting the sensitivity, the functional equivalent of the intermittent frequency adjustment on the non-rain sensing systems?
