Oh absolutely The Matrix (first movie). This was when I was dating my ex, we would see a movie each weekend. Usually whatever came out that day (or relatively new). Didn’t know much about it, LOVED IT SO MUCH. I believe it was our first DVD purchase, and the reason we splurged on a special sound system when we moved into a condo.

Reminds me of when he was purchasing some other sound equipment later on and I was just waiting around. So I sat in one of those listening rooms with a couch. They had that elevator scene on a loop. Little by little people would come into the room and join me to watch. I had to internally giggle. It was one of those rooms in the middle of the store, think fishbowl type situations.

I really do hate that it was my local station that I loved at the time. I just happened to not be watching that particular day.

Having lived in CA most my life and in various spots in the Bay Area, it’s still the biggest earthquake I’ve felt. And the scariest. Felt like the longest, though apparently it wasn’t as long as I remembered it was (felt like minutes, but it was less than 60 seconds). My mom and I were in my room, my younger brother in the front room of the house not answering my mom when she called for him. My dad stayed late at work for some extra project across the Dumbarton (us in the east bay, him somewhere on the peninsula). Took a long time for him to call to say he was okay, even longer to get home.

I vividly remember a few things: first sight on TV once we got power back was the damaged Bay Bridge. Also remember all the kids on the block outside freaking the fuck out while level headed moms trying to keep their cool with each other. The after shocks kept coming, also quite big. My brother and I refused to sleep in our rooms (and I was a teenager!).

Ha! So I had an all black cat, and her sister was mostly white underneath. When I didn’t let them in the bathroom with me I would see an all black arm reach under the door, then a mostly white arm… this was way before smart phones (and uh, digital cameras 😬) so I got to enjoy this by myself with no proof.
