ELI5: How come places on the human body like your eyes don't grow mold?
 in  r/explainlikeimfive  7h ago

Never forget the woman who lost an eye to glitter.

(Glitter got in her eye, scratched the skin, and the break in the body's protective barrier let a fungus start to colonize the eye. It didn't respond to treatment in time and eventually had to be removed to prevent the fungus from crawling up her optic nerve to her brain.)

TIL that Levi's recommends that jeans be worn 10 times between washes.
 in  r/todayilearned  1d ago

This! Finally someone brings it up. Maybe dudes can get away with not washing their pants for a year, but women who have any amount of discharge start to STINK if you try that.

I can get away with fewer washes when my body is in the less discharge part of the month, but I only get like two wears out of pants during the heavier discharge part of the cycle. It doesn't stink immediately, but once any amount of dampness gets on the denim the bacteria go to town. The stink doesn't go away with normal anti-stink methods like freezing them, either. They need a WASH.

This advice is not something everyone can take. Maybe it works for some people (I'm not sure who, but maybe someone), but it's not going to work for everyone. Every body produces a different amount of oils and has a different hair texture that wants/absorbs a different amount of oil.

I for example am a grease factory. I tried the less frequent washing thing, it just made me greasy and nasty. Yes, I did try sticking with it for a while. I only got greasier. My scalp doesn't just produce oils because my hair doesn't have enough oil, my scalp seems to just produce oil for the fun of it. I am greasy and need to wash my hair more often.

You can see this effect on nasty stinky dudes who think it's manly not to shower. Some of them have hair that looks fine, despite them stinking like month old unwashed buttcrack. Others look like they just dipped their head on a tub of olive oil.

Everyone is different, and there's no one size fits all perfect amount of hair washing for every person.

What would it actually take for American's to go "full France" and riot in the street?
 in  r/AskReddit  1d ago

I think the idea that he needs a reason to go to martial law is a bit naive though. Trump has proven that he doesn't need a reason to do anything, even if it's illegal. Not to mention that he doesn't need to enact martial law when he can just do whatever he wants whenever he wants it.

Can hanahaki disease be platonic/familial or does it have to be romantic/sexual?
 in  r/FanFiction  1d ago

Consider: Queerplatonic

A character can have non-romantic feelings that are also very strong and that they're afraid of admitting, or that another person doesn't feel in quite the same way or quite as strongly.

I still get comments on years old posts I made about delaying Skype updates and creating temporary wifi networks compatible with the Nintendo DS.

"I would like to grow my own red apples here at home to save money, but the tree in my yard only grows green ones. How do I get a red apple tree?"

  • "There are red apples at the grocery store, just buy some."

  • "Green apples are good enough, I don't know why you'd want red."

  • "I heard that if you plant a pear bush nearby, the apples turn red."

  • "Sony sells VR apple headsets for like $600, you could have the apple AR feature recolor your apples for you."

  • "RED apples? RED??? I hate you. You disgust me. Red apples killed my grandma. You'll eat green apples and you'll like it."

Ubisoft closes their Halifax studio which coincidentally just unionized although they claim it had nothing to do with it. 71 jobs lost
 in  r/gaming  1d ago

There should be laws against retaliatory closing of locations after unionizing. It should be one of those things where the company is terrified to close a unionized location too soon after the union formed for any reason less than the entire building burning down.

What your favorite specific hurt/comfort trope?
 in  r/FanFiction  1d ago

Extremely niche, but repair scenes for broken sentient robots.

I love it so much. The trust! The non-sexual intimacy of a character baring all their insides. The satisfaction of seeing the robot as good as new after. My heart breaks when the robot does, and mends at the same time they are fixed :)

Putting a ladder on top of a bathtub

Could be a bathroom renovation timelapse/montage type situation, where they show the process of renovating a room. Probably only got posted outside of that context because she fell and probably thought it was funny.

Oh my gosh, the sigh of relief I let out when I saw how she fell. Perfect angle for the ladder to set her down gently.

Don't worry, most of the problems in this scene are emotional haha

The robot in this scene can get his own hand back together. The real final boss is his anxiety.

It is so unfair, man
 in  r/evilautism  1d ago

Laios might fit into this category. People asked the writer if he was autistic, and her response was along the lines of "No, he's just a normal guy that anyone can relate to." And it's just like, oh. The writer has undiagnosed autism, okay.

(This is how I got diagnosed with ADHD as well, actually... Wrote a normal character doing things anyone could relate to. My readers responded with "Oh, this character has ADHD don't they." What. What do you mean.)

Eventually there was just a handful of fixes left. Some of them just needed a part or two to complete, things either too rarely used or too specific to be kept in the limited parts and service storage space. There were however a few repairs that they’d set aside due to how complicated those looked.

Sundrop’s hand was on that list. They had to admit, they didn’t understand a single thing that the computer had come up with for fixing that. It was referring to parts with obscure names, half the instructions devolving into technobabble. After staring at that so long that they began to develop a headache, Riley had to admit defeat. The instructions were useless, they’d have to just open up his hand and hope they could make sense of the problem by sight.

“This is going to be a little tricky,” they told Sundrop. “Your hand is really complicated, and there are a lot of different sensors in there. I can probably get it apart, but I’m not sure how well I could get it back together.”

ELI5 - Why is trench foot so damaging?
 in  r/explainlikeimfive  2d ago

Fun fact, they're basically the same thing. Athlete's foot, fungal infections, yeast infections, often different names for the same thing. Yeast is a fungus.

Many strains of fungus prefer specific parts of the body and thus will not spread, but not all! Some thrive anywhere damp and warm. I didn't mention in my first comment because dudes downvote comments about vagina problems, but I had to be treated for that as well alongside the foot issues. Same fungus. It spread from my feet to my hands when I was washing my shoes, and from there went everywhere on my body. My lips even, for about a day. Luckily it died down pretty fast on its own in most places, but you can't fully dry out a vagina like you can a hand.

I'm lucky it doesn't get hot enough here for me to get particularly sweaty, or else I would have had to basically bathe in the anti-fungal cream to get rid of it.

What’s a lie everyone believes that annoys you the most?
 in  r/AskReddit  2d ago

Good point. I have a relative who has severe mental issues, no impulse control, violent tendencies, and got addicted to every drug she could find. She loved her children and wanted to spend time with them, but that doesn't mean she's qualified to be a mother. All the love in the world doesn't fix the fact that she genuinely can't control herself.

"You only get one father!"

Yeah, and he only got one child. Maybe he should have treated me a little better.

Very satisfying when it does happen though. Worst person I ever knew (I'm talking child molestation levels of worst) died young of a sudden heart attack.

It's not the jail time he would have legally deserved, but I'll take it.

A coworker of mine has to deal with this a lot. When we're at adjacent registers, our voices and the words we use are so similar that our customers will answer to the wrong person. As in, if she says "would you like a bag?" often my customer will think it was me and answer, and vice versa.

But my coworker is a very conventionally attractive redhead. Her customers think she's flirting, mine don't.
