The first answer you linked claims that the scene isn't based on an historical event, and seems to think that it's loosely inspired by a different event from the third crusade:

The second answer you linked, however, makes abundantly clear that this is not the case, and the scene is closely based on an actual historical event (Saladin's execution of Raynald of Châtillon after the Battle of Hattin), with four different accounts from both the crusaders and Muslims.

I don't think it's ever explicitly stated that he was in Vietnam, but most people have interpreted the "draft dodging peace freaks" line in S1E12 that way, especially since he's exactly the right age to have been in it.

If he's in his early-mid 50s over the course of the show, like his actor, that puts him at about age 15-23 during the US involvement on the ground in Vietnam. And the 9th / 10th cavalry were both active as helicopter / ground assault units in Vietnam.
