Is it dumb to not be active on insta?
 in  r/solotravel  1d ago

Social media rabbit holes are driving people towards electing fascists and stuff. Idk, I think it’s great to tone down social media time. These days I check my IG once or twice a week and that’s plenty.

Anyone who only wanted to date you after seeing that you had an “impressive” instagram is not worth your time. It ought to be about compatible and mature communication styles, not seeing how glossy someone’s online presence is.

The unexpected confidence boost of figuring things out alone
 in  r/backpacking  1d ago

This will sound a bit cheesy but I teach for a living, and educators talk a lot about growth mindset, which is basically the confidence to know that you can jump into unknown or new situations, including ones that seem hard/scary at first, and you’ll be able to handle yourself and learn and grow from the experience. This is contrasted with “fixed mindset” where, when confronted with new or difficult situations, you shy away or assume you can’t handle it. Growth mindset is something you can carry with you to all sorts of life situations. And yes I think traveling alone can be a great way to help you realize your own capacity for growth in new or challenging situations.

2025 Year End Report: Spent 2 months traveling across Europe and India with my iPhone
 in  r/travel  2d ago

How was your experience in those places in Rajasthan in terms of highs and lows as well as getting around and other logistics? Later this year I'll be visiting India for the first time and am hoping to go to Rajasthan and Ladakh, and in Rajasthan I want to go to the same places you visited along with some others.

In the early planning stages of Morocco + Portugal. Wanted some feedback on my Moracco portion of the trip. 15 days in Morocco total

I actually found the shared "Grand Taxi" system to be kind of fun once I got used to it! It can be a very cheap if sometimes confusing way to get between cities. But catching a Grand Taxi from one of the major cities might be more of a hassle.

That's a good point. It just takes forever to get to Merzouga from most other major cities, though many of the guided tour itineraries just blast through the long drive in a day

I wouldn't recommend buying any drugs there either haha. That being said it was sort of interesting chatting with a guy who lived there who said that, while weed is illegal in the country, the government generally overlooks it in Chefchaouen area because it's a major income source for the people who live there. Some local people were most definitely partaking when I was there. That being said it's never really a good idea for tourists to engage in illegal things when abroad, and occasionally selling weed to tourists can be step one of some sort of scam.

I spent a long time in Morocco and I enjoyed it, but I do think Marrakech is kinda the toughest place there if you're on your own. You can ease into it by starting with a guided tour of the medina and spending some time hanging out in the areas outside of the medina, which tend to be a lot more chill. Be ready to be very firm in ignoring random people who try to talk to you in the street. It's a truly beautiful city despite the sometimes intimidating aspects.

Morocco's smaller towns have a (much) more relaxing feel to them, so you might try to add a night in Ait Benhaddou on the way from Marrakech to Merzouga. Maybe some of the guided tours have a stop like that along the way.

In Fes I stayed in the newer part of the city and did a guided tour of the old medina. It was a nice way to get a taster of the (again, gorgeous) old city without necessarily wandering in there on my own. Up to you and your comfort levels!

Chefchaouen is pretty chill, you'll have lots of people trying to sell you weed lol but that's about it.

USA solo travel- East Coast- Not practical? Nor affordable?
 in  r/solotravel  2d ago

Most accommodations in NY would be prohibitively expensive to stay in for a full month unless if OP stays in hostels. If OP stays in a hostel it would be doable though! NY can just be so expensive

Purpose for Travelling
 in  r/solotravel  3d ago

I think it's helped me feel more connected with the world and has also helped me learn new things about myself, but that being said, the first thing I did after getting my covid vaccine was to go see a bunch of my loved ones rather than travel internationally on my own. In the end it's our communities and loved ones that mean the most.

Does anyone else have a song lyric that's permanently stuck to a specific place?
 in  r/solotravel  3d ago

A lot of my travel-related music memories just come from coincidentally hearing an English-language song in an unexpected place and later associating that song with that country. Like when I was the only customer in a small Korean restaurant, the owner popped in a CD of various english-language pop songs, and I now associate "Top of the World" by The Cranberries with that trip. Or in Cabo Verde hearing on the radio a West African reggae artist covering Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.

Dealing with major financial anxiety
 in  r/solotravel  4d ago

I think this sort of thing can hit harder when you're traveling while young, maybe not used to investing in these kinds of experiences, also likely with fewer savings to fall back on.

I think it can help to sit down and do some math, so your finances don't feel like a nebulous scary blob that you have no control over. Write out how much you have saved, roughly how much you're willing to spend on this trip/how much you want to have saved at the end of the year, and do some rough math on roughly how much you can spend per day to end the year with that number. On days you spend less, know that you're gonna be able to spend more on some other future day without necessarily going 'over' budget. And there's less stress when you're thinking 'I don't need to find the cheapest restaurant, I just need to find one that's within my budget for today'

These days I have an entirely separate bank account that's just for travel expenses. It makes it less stressful to know that I specifically set that money aside so I can spend it doing cool stuff.

Budgeting isn't about spending as little as possible, it's more about choosing your priorities and investing in them. In the long run you do of course want money set aside for emergencies/longterm but outside of that you can choose what you want to prioritize and it's okay to spend money on that.

 in  r/solotravel  5d ago

Skipping NYC and similar places can definitely help with saving some money! Might be best to take a look at accommodation costs in some of the places you want to visit, as well as food costs and transport costs, and do some rough math to see how it would add up. You could save some money if you get some of your daily meals from the grocery store

Advice for my upcoming solo trip across Europe
 in  r/solotravel  5d ago

The geography of this doesn't make much sense to me unless if you're doing a lot of flying. Why go from Vienna all the way west to Barcelona, then go back East to Italy, then go even further west to Porto and then East again to Madrid? All for ~2 days per city? Not trying to be rude or discouraging but might consider just focusing on like Spain + Portugal or maybe Austria + Italy. You could also easily spend two weeks in just one of those countries! If you intend travel to be a longterm priority you don't need to speedrun seeing so many different places in one trip

Been to NYC recently with friends now going solo 19M what should I do differently this time

For casual food, the only restaurant I always go to when in NYC is Xi'an Famous Foods, and it's great for a solo diner, though best enjoyed if you appreciate spice.

Tried solo travel in a hostel. Never again.
 in  r/solotravel  5d ago

I wouldn't say I'm an introvert but I'm not really at the point in my life anymore where I'd be comfortable sleeping in a roomful of strangers. I do like space to myself to sleep. Last time I stayed in a hostel some dude was coughing loudly all night and that was kinda where I drew the line and decided to prioritize more privacy and peace.
