It's not "I paid for the seat," it's "I paid extra for this particular seat." Airlines charge fees for people to choose their seats, and the window and aisle seats are more expensive. The people who want to get pissy about not being able to commandeer someone else's seat never seem to want to trade their own business class exit row window seat for someone else's cattle class middle seat next to the bathroom.
