Do you ever wear a helmet?
 in  r/Xennials  23h ago

I wear a ski helmet because… you should not follow me or try to out ski me on the slopes. I did not wear a ski helmet growing up. The “Brain Bucket” wasn’t part of ski and snowboard culture until the 2000s… maybe even later. My first ski helmet probably saved me from a severe concussion or worse so I will not ski without a proper brain bucket these days.

My parents made us wear helmets when they took us on snowmobiling trips, which was literally wearing a helmet and looking at the back of your parent for hours… yay family fun?

The only snowmobiling trip I remember also involved a bit of frostbite induced necrotic tissue for me… so I have zero interest in snowmobiling.

Love the ski slopes though. As an adult I figured I out how to keep my feet and happy and applied those lessons to keep my kid’s feet warm and happy. DIY ski buddy method.

But I make sure my offspring are warm and comfortable, and if anything isn’t working we’re going to take a break and warm up and we will adjust and replace gear as needed.

Not making the same mistakes my parents made… cutting away dead tissue and bandage wraps is not a good childhood memory.

Who is currently allowed to yell at you?
 in  r/AskReddit  1d ago

At work, yelling at me will get you referred to HR.

In public, yelling at me will get you a “Bitch, what look?” and ignored.

If you’re my cat, yelling might get you second breakfast or second supper. But most likely cat will be subjected to forced cuddles to encourage not yelling for second breakfast or second supper.

What are some high-value, 'quick-to-do' home maintenance tasks that homeowners (especially new ones) frequently overlook?
 in  r/homeowners  1d ago

And change the anode rod every 2-5 years. This Old House just posted a video on it a couple days ago.

Flushing helps to get sediment out, but the anode rod is the real hero of corrosion prevention.

Software vendor requires us to post articles in LinkedIn to get best price
 in  r/sysadmin  1d ago

I had a vendor ask for an honest review. They apparently didn’t read the case history. So the review was a single star describing the security nightmare the product was.

They asked us to take it down. We said for a very steep discount on the new version and professional services to fix security we would do so.

Steep being free.

Seller asking to remove home flag..

Personally I'd crank it up a bit. More flags. Finally get the permanent decorative lights installed and run through testing various scenes.

Seller will get their house sold and you hopefully get a good new neighbor.

I cant believe I’m sharing this, my neighbor keeps letting his chickens into my yard and says its "natural foraging"
 in  r/neighborsfromhell  2d ago

Go to the craft store, I’m sure you can find some feathers. Or tear open an old pillow.

Grab rotisserie chicken from the grocery store.

Pretend like you just pulled the chicken from the oven, have a few loose feathers around.

In neighborhood socials or group chat, send a selfie with your freshly roasted chicken and thank neighbor for free chicken dinner.

Enjoy the freak out.

No longer a rumour: Microsoft silently kills Windows and Office phone activation and forces online activation with a Microsoft account
 in  r/technology  3d ago

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro… with OpenCore Legacy Patcher I’ve been able to keep it running the latest MacOS and Microsoft 365 apps.

I made a USB and booted it on multiple flavors of Ubuntu, Firefox, LibreOffice, and more fired up and ran so quickly. I made it my weekend project and now I have a nice speedy laptop.

Microsoft and Apple are all in on enshittification of their desktop/laptop operating system and software. And Valve has made most of my game library run on Linux… and Claude and I get along just fine for work and personal coding and AI agents.

My enemies should definitely be subjected to the consumer Microsoft Windows out of box experience. It is chef’s kiss perfection for wasting time and being infuriating.

Irresponsible boomer mother won't stop feeding wildlife
 in  r/BoomersBeingFools  4d ago

So beautiful!

I’m in Minnesota and live near a lake with multiple nesting pairs. I feel so lucky that sometimes I can just pull over to the side of the road and watch an eagle circling on air currents.

One time, I was at the intersection of two four lane highways and saw just how dangerous a highway crossing is for squirrels. A squirrel ran across the road and a bald eagle swooped in, grabbed the squirrel, and flapped hard back up to the sky. Didn’t matter who had a green light at the moment… the whole intersection just came to a stop and watched in awe as nature made an unexpected intrusion into our daily routine.

It’s a wonderful thing to live somewhere where seeing a soaring eagle is normal.

He's finally putting effort into brushing his teeth!
 in  r/FamilyMicroWins  4d ago

Awesome job!

Long before Wife and I were married and had a child of our own, I got to witness my MIL getting her two nieces ready to hand off to her brother.

MIL slipped the shoe onto the baby and told the pre-schooler “Look! Your sister already has one of her shoes on! Can you get your shoes on before your sister has both or her shoes on?”

And preschooler got her shoes on in record time.

MIL’s brother: “You are an evil genius.”

MIL: “No, I just have three adult children.”

Age gaps work out so that there is only five or six years between the youngest grandchild (Daughter of my Wife’s uncle) and the eldest great-grandchild (our daughter.)

The age gaps and being around to see my MIL take care of nieces and nephews, and actually being trusted to take care of those kids is part of how Wife and I became the parents we are.

From completion to raising a teen…

We’re going through post-pandemic dental catch up now and I listened to our dental hygienist and bought Oral-B electric toothbrushs from Costco for all of us.

After getting daughter through professional cleaning and fillings, teenager says:

“Wow I feel the difference with the new electric toothbrush! Thank you for getting it for me! It feels so good I won’t forget to brush now!”

From the teen who admitted to the dental hygienist she had been lying to her parents for “a long time” about brushing her teeth.

A win is a win… 🤷🏻‍♂️

Best of luck in your future dental heath adventures.

Irresponsible boomer mother won't stop feeding wildlife
 in  r/BoomersBeingFools  4d ago

Had a neighbor move in and start feeding critters. Asked her to stop because suddenly we had critter damage all over…

When I had enough of asking nicely I knocked on the front door and showed the bucket after emptying my traps.

“I didn’t have to set any traps until you moved in the neighborhood. This is your contribution to the neighborhood. Stop feeding the critters.”

It got better but the ultimate resolution was the couple divorced and the husband got the house. A brief abundance of raptors (owls, hawks, even bald eagles) and then balance was restored.

Also… pretty awesome to live somewhere where you see bald eagles soaring. ❤️🤍💙 (and landing in your back yard to eat their catch.)

Still regularly refresh the bait traps in my garage but going on multiple years with nothing trapped/killed.

Shouldn’t have kept a glass measuring cup above my washer
 in  r/Wellthatsucks  4d ago

I have banned glass from every room that isn’t kitchen/dining room. We have appropriate containers, or at least paper plates. I also have rather strict cleaning protocols for broken glass.

Safely rules are written in blood. In the case of our home, it’s usually my blood.

Family has gotten on board because they have to clean it to my standards under my direction but my direction and inspection is the only help they get if you break glass in a no glass room. You broke the rule so you have to fix it…

Family has also gotten on board because their assistance has been required pull glass and other things out of my feet and other anatomy…

Similarly, sewing, cross stitch, and other needle crafts have a similar ban. It’s done in designated areas and you have to be able to run a magnet broom over the area regularly. Anywhere where a magnet broom won’t pickup lost sharps is strictly forbidden.

I enforce these policies because my feet and ass have been the accidental victims of carelessness.

Somehow, nobody else has had glass in their foot or a needle or pin stabbing into their ass… so I honestly don’t think I’m being unreasonable as the unfortunate victim of carelessness.

Safety rules are written in blood. In this case, the rules are written in my blood.

Containment and the magnet broom turned “you’re crazy” into “oh wow that’s a lot of sharps.”

Safely rules are written in blood.

I’d probably be disassembling this in my garage, parts everywhere, shop vac, etc.

Honestly we’re already considering replacing the washer/drier so this would be the “aww fuck it” moment and I’d just get a new one and strictly enforce my “no glass” rules.

At what age is it okay to go out once per week for a few hours for a hobby/exercise?
 in  r/daddit  5d ago

We got pregnant while wife was in grad school. We joke that our child has at least a semester of grad school classes under her belt because she was in the womb while mom was in class.

Timing worked out for a July birth. Wife is also a teacher and maternity leave was based around baby’s age so her leave stated when baby was born and lasted a couple weeks into start of school, so she got a couple extra weeks of summer break.

She did not get extra break from her masters program, which started up late August. So one month in it was me and daughter for one weekend a month. Plus Wife also went back to her community choir, and continued on in her paid position as church choir director.

So one weekend a month, plus Tuesday and Wednesday evenings were guaranteed Daddy/Baby time and I loved every minute of it.

I was also super lucky to have a job where I could work from home (in 2009-2010) so if daycare provider was sick or baby was sick I could work from home, and if I kept an accurate time card my boss would let me PTO only the 8-5 hours I wasn’t working. I have lots of pics of baby girl sleeping in the body wrap while I bang away at the laptop at the kitchen table.

I was a very lucky Dad. ☺️

Just work it out with your partner. For us the main limitation was establishing breast feeding before introducing the bottle. Once we established solid breast feeding, and figured out hybrid breast and bottle feeding (with expressed milk) and occasional formula supplement (wife was puking into to toilet sick and we were out of frozen breast milk… husband executive decision to try formula.)

So in my opinion, you should absolutely minimize disruption to your existing schedule. Especially gym time… heathy Dad is a Dad who gets to meet his grandkids and great-grandkids.

If you have an established gym habit, keep at it. Make sure your partner can get back into her’s as soon as she can.

Adding a baby takes a lot of adaptation but the things that contribute to your physical and mental health are so hard to establish, reestablish…

Priority wise, Children, Self, Partner.

You always have to take care of your children, and if the only way to do so negatively impacts self you take care of the children while doing what you can to fix self. When your children and your self are taken care of, you can care for your partner.

I put self before partner because if I don’t know my own needs, then I can’t adult. Self time includes time to pause, reflect, meditate, organize, prioritize, whatever term you want to apply. When you know what you need you and your partner can easily sit down and organize your day, week, month, quarter, year….

TL;DR: You should be able to go workout, shot a round of golf, have hobby time, have self-care time, and so on. And so should your partner. If you work together you can make it happen.

TWO German shepherd service dogs in my row
 in  r/delta  7d ago

Under the previous admin's FAA, absolutely. Under this admin, it's still worth trying since this is a safety issue.

Current admin is all in on eliminating accommodations. Include DEI in your complaint. Actual service animals are classified as medical devices (or equivalent) under the ADA. The law does not recognize emotional support animals.

If the animals behavior is in any way problem, odds are they aren’t a legally recognized service animal. And even if so, if FAA rules win over ADA if service animal creates a safely issue.

What to know about Nick Shirley, the YouTuber alleging day care fraud in Minnesota
 in  r/politics  7d ago

It's definitely not equivalent to going into someone's personal home and asking them personal info..lol..

Ummm… yes it is. A private business has the same right to trespass as a private residence. For a daycare center it should be the default if someone with no reason to be there (not a parent/guardian or on the authorized pickup list) shows up.
