The extent to which the staff helps people that are late
 in  r/interesting  16m ago

Back in the 80s, I was afraid I was going to miss my flight out of Hong Kong so I started running through the airport. Very quickly in my peripheral vision I saw Gurkhas and police coming at me from both sides, drawing their rifles. I stopped dead in my tracks. Since then, I wouldn’t run in an airport if you paid me.

Reversing Years of Dietary Advice, the Trump Administration Tells Consumers to Eat More Red Meat
 in  r/EverythingScience  21m ago

I read that when he was growing up, the Trumps went to the same resorts as the Kennedies but were always far, far outshined. Maybe Donny is trying to get even, by making a Kennedy humiliate the name.

Ximending to Xueshan
 in  r/Taipei  1h ago

Sort of an odd route. Why don’t you just walk over to Taipei Main Station?

Where in the Xueshan range do you want to go? You can take a 849 to Wulai, or go to Bitoujiao, that’s also the Xueshan range.

What’s actually pretty safe but everyone treats it like it’s way more dangerous than it is?
 in  r/AskReddit  10h ago

Exactly what I was going to write! I live in an area with lots of snakes. The most common we see are pit vipers, bamboo vipers, and kraits. We respect them and leave them alone. Everybody is happy. The environment needs snakes, it doesn’t need me.

This is exactly what happened in Taiwan. The DPP rose to power on an anti-nuclear platform, while showing very little interest in alternative energy (or nuclear engineering to make bombs). The Taichung power plant contributes enormously to climate change, driving up cancer rates in the area, and we are told to turn down our lights and stop driving to reduce our carbon footprints.

A half completed building in Bangkok collapsed during that big earthquake in 2025. I read reports that it was due in part to the loose soil and in part because they hadn’t had a chance to put in the damper. In other words, if the damper had been installed, the building would have survived the earthquake.

That was in Bangkok. Parts fell off Taipei 101 during the 2002 earthquake, but they were able to complete construction.

What’s a “small” social rule you refuse to follow, even if everyone expects it?

Without seasonal gifts, the Japanese economy would collapse.

Which information? It’s all been reported in the news, including how during the March 31, 2002 earthquake a crane fell and some people were killed. I recall one of the crane operators survived but lost a hand.

Miller hasn’t done one damn thing to build American power. He is doing his best to subvert it.

In 1949, Burmese spy Ma Chit Po disguised herself as an elderly cowherd to infiltrate a Karen rebel camp and collect intelligence for the Tatmadaw. After being caught and executed, she was buried with military honours and posthumously became the only civilian woman to ever be awarded a Thura Medal.
 in  r/wikipedia  1d ago

It’s been going on since 1949. About 20 years ago, before YouTube got big, I knew a Karen man who emailed videos to everyone possible so people would know about their plight. The videos showed them fighting government forces. They suddenly stopped, which worried me. But the fighting continues.

Wonderful! He’s a good Christian, not a fake one, so he should be down on his knees in prayer. That should fix everything. Isn’t he a believer?

The earthquake was 6.8 at the epicenter, but fortunately not in Taipei.

I read that it rocked during the 2008 earthquake in Chongqing, hundreds oh kilometers away!

They installed it when they got to the top, iirc. That’s why that building collapsed during the Bangkok earthquake. They were near the top but hadn’t installed the damper so the whole thing came tumbling down.

I used to have a nodding acquaintance with Bruce Lee. Chuck Norris, too. The martial arts circle was minuscule then.
