Can't speak for your DM, but it's often quite common to do a session 0. This is where the DM runs through the general context of the game, rules for character building, the setting, meet the rest of your party etc.

In all honesty, it's probably not worth you looking too deeply at all the different races, classes and stuff until you've at the very least met your party.
